Later in life Eddie Bracken lived in Glen Ridge NJ and almost every day he would walk down to the local convience store to buy his newspaper and get a coffee. I was a young Policeman. One day he caught me staring at him because stupid me thought he looked like Roy Wally from National Lampoons Vacation. Almost like he could read my mind he said " Goodmorning Officer my name is Eddie Bracken, but you think Im Roy Wally, you see Im an actor". I was a bit embarrassed then went on to see what a wonderful actor for decades that he was. We now were friends. Until he passed we would chat - Eddie was just another guy from the neighborhood.

With all the complaints about Hal Block by many (not all) of the posters, it was nice to hear about him having participated in a worthwhile money raising event for charity. And Hal was very gracious to share the credit.

Lois Simmons Can’t deny that. Very classy indeed! But the Hal Block downside is larger than the upside. If he could have kept himself in check, he could have stayed on the panel as long as he liked - but, alas, he couldn’t! You gotta tailor your act to your audience, and he couldn’t or wouldn’t do that. I wonder how many of WML’s female contestantsfound his act excessively boorish.

Hal Block was a famous comedy writer. His style might not fit the panel -- but he was brought onto Whats My LIne to add some comedy to the show. He can't be blamed for being what he was -- the producers knew his style and initially it was thought to be a good idea. It is fortunate the the panel evolved to have such a perfect mix of regulars.... Rowby.

While his style did not fit in with the show, he was very clever and funny. He was an excellent panelist in terms of questions he asked. Also, I did notice after time that his flirtatious schtick was consistent with all female contestants, young and old. So he did look like a creeper when he did it to the younger ladies, he would compliment and flirt similarly with much older ladies. And there was one episode where he jumped up to help an elderly contestant across the stage, very much the gentleman.

He's a boor and always looks as if he's about to burp. How could so much bad taste be in one person? They should have tied his hands under the desk so he couldn't scratch or stick a finger in his ear.

I just re-watched this episode, thanks to a link in the WML FaceBook group. Eddie Bracken lived to be 87 years old, but today is the 103rd anniversary of his birth. (Feb. 7, 2018) I didn't remember this episode well at all, but it was a good one -- lots of fun! Nice to have this occasion to give me the incentive to watch it today. :-)

When Arlene had to wear a patch in 1960, John Daly mentioned Miss Hathaway of 1960. This is the first record of 4 times that Arlene wore an eye patch. Reported causes included Peter inadvertently poking her, shingles, and inflections from nail scrapes. In 1962, she sunburned her eyes in summer stock and appeared on a broadcast in sunglasses.

I had shingles on my chest. What a horror. A lot of pain. Lasted about three weeks. Started on my birthday the 24th of Dec. so had both my BD and Xmas ruined. Stupid doctor gave me nothing for the mental anguish and prescribed a lotion which was useless but cost $50 which was a tidy sum back then. My wife made a lotion which was better than the expensive one and coincided with the affliction actually getting better. Shingles of the eye has to be even worse than what I endured.

It appears she was somewhat accident prone even before she had a very serious car crash. I'm not looking for gossip but I noted as well that she looked rather strained and unwell in some earlier episodes (I actually wasn't even sure it was her!). I wonder if something was occasionally amiss behind the scenes.

I watched at least half of over the eight hundred wml videos and have noticed at least twice that Arlene wore an eyepatch. Somewhere in the comments someone mentioned she had an uncle who was a cosmetic surgeon. Since then I've wondered if the patches were a convenient cover for having her eye/eyes done. I have also seen joan rivers wearing sunglasses on a live tv show. It was well known that she was a plastic surgery junkie. Before the wonderful Regis philbin's local show went national he also wore sunglasses on his live morning show with the excuse he had a medical condition with his eyes. I absolutely loved Arlene francis with or without the patch.

Whenever I hear them saying goodnight to each other at the end of the episode, I always think of "The Waltons". But according to Earl Hamner, Jr., the show's creator, it was based on his own experience growing up in a very small house where people could hear each other from room to room and would continue until his father put a stop to it for the night. It had nothing to do with WML.

Sometime between August 17 and this episode, the tech staff changed the style of the superimposed cards that show the contestant's line. Previously they were hand-painted or -lettered; on this episode they are in a modern sans serif font with uniform stroke weight. Previously they were faded in and out electronically, as with a knob or slider on a video mixer. Here they are also blurred at beginning and end by changing the focus of the lens on the rostrum camera (the one that is aimed at the title cards and so forth).

I thought Arlene Francis was dragging out some face time when questioning the MG as I was sure she knew who it was. But then she guessed the wrong person (as did someone else later). So perhaps those additional questions weren't always a matter of camera hogging, but simply the panelist confirming their guess. And there was a very good Jimmy Durante impression by Eddie Bracken in the midst of the questioning. But the panelists knew it wasn't Jimmy. I was surprised that no one asked if the MG did impressions as part of his shtick.

During the free guesses for the last contestant, Phyllis Iannaci, Bennett Cerf guesses (jokingly) that she is Babe Didrikson's kid sister. Babe Didrikson Zaharias was a great athlete and was well known at the time. She won two gold medals in track and field in the 1932 Summer Olympics and then turned to golf and won 10 major LPGA tournaments, including the U.S. Women's Open in 1948, 1950, and 1954. The Associated Press named her the "Woman Athlete of the Half Century" in 1950. She did look a little like the last contestant.

I believe it's Eddie Bracken's collaborations with Preston Sturges -- "The Miracle of Morgan Creek," "Hail the Conquering Hero" -- that have most kept him alive to film scholars and (what used to be called) movie buffs. His examination by the panel here is entertaining, but I wish there had been more time for Lady Steeplejack and, judging by the expressions of some of the panelists, Arlene especially, they clearly wished the same.

@@steveburrus5526 A very few special programs preempted WML from time to time. But each was a one-time interruption. Typically, someone in our group of commenters will have researched old broadcast schedules and posted their findings in the comments for the episode following the gap.

one would have thought that they would have caught on pretty quickly that when there was a small time available for a guest, to just ignore the walk and guess and start with the questions. kind of dumb to put everyone through that unnecessary pressure.

bigred997 Yeah, if I’d have been a contestant I’d try to be slated last. The more time I could waste, the easier it would be for me to win the $50 by forfeit. BTW, $50 in 1952 would buy as much as $60 or $65 dollars at today’s prices so it was a pretty good prize.

With all the comments, I can't believe no one has asked for an explanation of bracken's joke at the end of his segment in which he suggests Arlene "be patriotic" and have the blood drained? It's almost as if he's saying she should go donate blood, but what the hell would that have to do with her eye being scratched?

It could be that he thought it was bloody and that the blood taken from it would have been of aid to our military, which at that time was engaged in the Korean War. It was a pretty lame joke.

with the limburger contestant, dorothy said, "am i wrong to say.. " and john replied, "no you are not wrong," technically, this is a negative answer. she should have not been allowed to continue. if she had said, "am i correct that.." then he would have said, "yes, you are right." which is a positive answer.

I had to listen to that exchange again (12:41) to get it straight in my own head! Dorothy: "Would I be wrong in assuming that this product was not especially designed to beautify the lady?" John's answer: "Yes, it is not especially designed to beautify a lady." You're right, Larry Teren! If he had been able to clearly think through all the double negatives, John's answer by rights should have (or at least *could* have) been: "No you would not be wrong." But it *is* confusing -- so I guess he goofed this time! ;p

@ToddSF

Jeopardy! definitely challenges one's knowledge and I find it highly entertaining to watch, even by myself, the challenge being to say the correct answer out loud before any contestant does or before Alex Trebek reveals the answer. In contrast, I don't think Wheel of Fortune is that much of a challenge. It certainly isn't anywhere near as difficult to qualify as a contestant. I find "Wheel" to be about as challenging as "Celebrity Jeopardy!" -- the celebrity version of "Jeopardy!" is completely dumbed down. As to "Wheel" I'm always amazed that people will spend their accrued money buying vowels when the answer is so often obvious with just consonants showing. I would include "Who Wants to be a Millionaire?" to be intellectually challenging, but I find the program's format rather annoying and slow moving -- and it's especially annoying when the host can't pronounce the answers correctly. At least Mr. Trebek comes off as reasonably intelligent himself.

Even though most of a steeplejack's work would be outside, certain jobs might require a portion to be done inside as well (certain repairs for example, that still primarily need to be accessed from the outside and have the scaffolding or other rigging in place). As John Daly has said at other times, she would be the expert. It was also a shame, as he said, to have so little time to spend on the last challenger. Very few questions can be asked in that period of time, especially if the answers are borderline yes or no.

It is interesting that Dorothy might ask to feel the muscles of a male contestant, but apparently never asks to feel the muscles of a female contestant. Some female contestants have jobs requiring arm strength, so it makes one wonder if Dorothy has reasons, other than the game, for touching males.

From TV.com episode guide for this show: "ARLENE'S EYEPATCH INCIDENT #1 of 4: Arlene is wearing a black eyepatch over her left eye this evening. In her 1978 autobiography, Arlene explains her scratched cornea: "The first accident to my eye came about because my son, Peter, was sitting on my lap, watching a Disney cartoon on television and something in the movie scared him. He turned to bury his head in my shoulder, at the same time lifting his hand, and the scratch on my cornea to which I referred was the result." www.tv.com/shows/whats-my-line/episode-119-92954/

49yt Makes more sense than Gil Fates's explanation that Arlene had a "habit of sticking her fingernail in her eye".
@ToddSF
@ToddSF 8 жыл бұрын
It would seem that Arlene frequently got something like a fallen eyelash in her eye, or some other small foreign object, and on multiple occasions managed to scratch her cornea with a long fingernail while trying to remove the object with her fingertip. I would have suggested to her using a Q-Tip with the cotton bud on the end wet in water or eyewash solution. I think that kind of self-inflicted injury to the cornea accounts for three out of four incidents that required an eyepatch. The fourth one you can read about elsewhere in this post -- where her son Peter, as a toddler, poked her in the eye accidentally.

I've no doubt John Daly was an intelligent fellow with a superior grasp of the English language....but he often falls victim to PROLIXITY when he gives one of his complex, over-extended explanations or deliberately verbose 'clarifications' to the panel. I realize he probably does it deliberately to get a laugh, but it does tend to grate on occasions....and it's clear that some panel members might have agreed with me.

You have to take into account that this show was broadcast just 7 years after World War Two. It was fresh in our minds. We’d fought a costly war for freedom and to stop bossy boots like you telling us all what to do. Now, 76 years after the war, our sacrifice has largely been forgotten and new generations of people abound, demanding that we must do this, or must not do that. Do you think that a strong independent woman like Arlene would give your admonishments serious consideration? Rather, she would likely have coined a new term, and today we would be complaining about an infestation of “Kristas” rather than “Karens”. Please visit your local cenotaph and reflect on your attitude young miss.

WTF? How determined to find fault with someone do you have to be before assuming there was nothing wrong with her eye after Bennett SPECIFICALLY SAID she had cut her eye and was wearing a patch for that reason. Damn. You couldn't be like everyone else who missed it and ask why she's wearing a patch, rather than assume with no basis at all that she's being a horrible person?
