Shelley (a great actress) was an absolute hoot! I loved watching her on Merv's show - as well as the Carson Show. I recall her telling Johnny that she spent more than $100,000 on "psychiatric analysis" to discover why she liked Latin men. (A huge sum of money at the time). Shelley seemed distracted, as she said this (while straightening her dress) and the audience grew very quiet - after a few seconds, Johnny Carson asked her if she ever "learned why" - and Shelley (in her great Brooklyn voice!) replied, "Yes, it was because I LIKED THEM!" Needless to say, the audience roared. No one ever laughed at this great lady - everyone loved her fun humor and down to earth honesty.

Bennett compared the cattle photographer to Richard Avedon, who therefore must have been well known by 1960 for his photos. Avedon had an extraordinarily long career then at the top of his field.

Introducing John Daly at 1:53, Bennett correctly uses "tortuous" to describe the garden paths that Daly leads the panel up, meaning "twisty, winding, devious" rather than the similar word "torturous" with which it's often confused, meaning "involving torture, painful."

I'm not sure square manhole covers are a good idea. There's a reason for the round ones -- you can't accidentally drop a round manhole cover and kill someone working down below. A rectangular or square cover will easily fit through the manhole because the diagonal dimension is longer than either side of a square or a rectangle, and manhole covers weight a great deal.
@rmelin13231 Жыл бұрын
From another post (below): "The sides of the lid were longer than the diameter of the manhole so the lid could not fall through the manhole". He apparently won an award for his design.

I feel like both of the regular contestants' lines were a bit too obscure/difficult to guess... The panel usually laughs or goes "ohhhh" after the reveal, but here they just continued to look puzzled. Was it for "The Poseidon Adventure" that Shelley first gained weight? Some actors/actresses can lose such weight, like Renee Zellweger. They seem to just turn around and lose those pounds, though Shelley never did. She was still gorgeous anyway.
@preppysocks2092 жыл бұрын
@@diananutt1517 No, she was heavy before that but in that movie her character remarked on how she had once been a swimming champ in her youth, but no longer. In "Lolita," around 1960, as James Mason loses interest in her, he ungentlemanly refers to Shelley's character as a "cow."

@@preppysocks209 I didn't see "Lolita," but I remember in "Poseiden" as the ship filled with water, Shelley's character performed some sort of heroic swim hoping to save their group's lives, didn't she? John Daly said that William Taylor's square manhole cover company was known as the "Silent Knight Company." Arlene said "Holey Night." When I looked up the company to find the correct spelling, I learned that in 1960 Mr. Taylor won the Achievement Award from the National Noise Abatement Council. I also learned that the sides of the lid were longer than the diameter of the manhole so the lid could not fall through the manhole.
