The whale trainer, Sonny Allen, founded IMATA (International Marine Animal Trainers' Association) It's mission: dedicated to advancing the humane care and handling of marine animals by fostering communication between professionals that serve marine animal science through training, public display, research, husbandry, conservation, and education. He passed away in 1997.

+D Travolta Your brother was so young and handsome and dressed so hip for his appearance. I would have guessed that he was one of those teen idol singers that Philadelphia produced so much of, the kind that Dick Clark introduced on American Bandstand. But he had a much more far-reaching purpose in his life. And as a "Star Trek" fan, I can't help but wonder what he thought of "Star Trek IV" and the idea that life on Earth depended upon the survival of humpback whales.

I remember when he was only known for stand-up very well, in the early 1960's. His stock character was the nebbishy Jewish guy who couldn't succeed with women; who always got picked last for the baseball team in school; was socially gauche and physically clumsy. "What's New Pussycat" showcases this character. He's still there in "Play It Again, Sam" and "Take The Money And Run." "Annie Hall" in 1977 was the first time the Allen film persona successfully pursued and won women.

"What's New, Pussycat?" was the beginning of Woody Allen's link with United Artists Corporation. Here is a list of all the films he made from 1965 to 1980 (unless otherwise stated, all of his films during this period were for UA): "What's New, Pussycat?" (1965; Writer/Actor) "What's Up, Tiger Lilly?" (1966; Director/Himself/Dub Actor/Associate Producer; American International Pictures) "Casino Royale" (1967; Actor; Columbia Pictures) "Take the Money and Run" (1969; Director/Writer/Actor; Cinerama Releasing/ABC Pictures) "Men of Crisis: The Harvey Wallinger Story" (1971; Director/Writer/Actor; PBS) "Bananas" (1971; Director/Writer/Actor) "Play it Again, Sam" (1972; Writer/Actor; Paramount) "Everything You Always Wanted to Know About Sex* *But Were Afraid to Ask" (1972; Director/Writer/Actor) "Sleeper" (1973; Director/Composer/Writer/Actor) "Love and Death" (1975; Director/Writer/Actor) "The Front" (1976; Actor; Columbia Pictures) "Annie Hall" (1977; Director/Writer/Actor) "Interiors" (1978; Director/Writer) "Manhattan" (1979; Director/Writer/Actor) "Stardust Memories" (1980; Director/Writer/Actor)

Allen didn't seem to like it that much, though. He admired its director, British-born Clive Donner (it was his first Hollywood film), but he hated how the studio (United Artists Corporation), mishandled the script he wrote for them. He said it would have been a much better film, had he directed it. After that, he made sure he had complete control on all of his future projects.

@@lanef58 , not exactly. He wrote for Sid Caesar's specials after Caesar's Hour (and long after Your Show of Shows) went off the air. His main TV writing credit was for the Jack Parr version of The Tonight Show. He wrote humorous magazine pieces for The New Yorker and Playboy. Before his movie career, he was probably best known as a stand-up comic in night clubs and guest appearances on television, and on lp records.

@kevinwachs5905 And as a playwright. I believe he had completed Don't Go Near the Water(or was it Don't Drink the Water?) and Play it Again Sam, in the 1960s. Play it Again, Sam was made into a hilarious film. He wrote the screenplay and starred in it. Also, it featured a young Diane Keaton. Woody didn't direct it, but that would soon change in his subsequent film projects. He's a brilliant, prolific filmmaker.

In all of his many appearances as guest panelist, the round with the whale trainer was Martin Gabel's worst, at least so far. In his first try, he barely survived a "no" when he asked if the guest did something in the athletic field when John said physical dexterity was necessary. He then followed up with whether the guest was connected with sports, which it is hard to imagine he would have been since he was not involved with athletics, and of course, he received a no. Then when Arlene made it clear that porpoise was not the right animal, Martin asked about a porpoise, Martin was generally a good player, and I far prefer his intros of John to Bennett's, but everyone has an off night sometime.

Now that you mention it, I see that there IS the video from the preceding week on KZfaq in your name. But KZfaq is showing it as having been posted two weeks ago. (Perhaps you also explained the reason for this elsewhere, if so, sorry about my inability to keep up with things.) I consult no e-mails. I rely upon searching KZfaq for What's My Line?, ordered according to the most recent videos, and I kept looking and looking yesterday and also today for a posting bearing yesterday's date. I even opened your channel and clicked the videos link, but again, there was the video of two days ago and the video of today but none for yesterday (that is why I concluded there was no posting). I did not know enough to look two weeks ago.

romeman01 Forgive me for trying to weasel out of explaining, I just grew tired of retyping the explanation after the 4th time. :) What happened was that Tuesday's video was made visible to the public due a YT glitch, nothing I did (all the videos are uploaded in advance and scheduled to post automatically or I'd never be posting regularly-- I'm far too unreliable for that.) When I noticed the glitch, I changed the status of the video back to "private", but as far as YT is concerned, the video was first posted two weeks ago, even though it was invisible to the public for all but a few hours. The only way I could have addressed this would have been to delete the video and re-upload it because-- as I would assume you're well aware, since you've posted a good deal here yourself-- KZfaq is a pain in the butt!

What is it. Do we think John Daly is maybe a bit smarter than he actually is?
@WhatsMyLine
@WhatsMyLine 9 жыл бұрын
Joe Postove I don't think so. A person can be highly intelligent and still very weak on certain subjects. John's verbal gymnastics alone (among many other observable qualities) indicate how intelligent he was. And let's not forget that everyone else on the show makes the same mistakes-- considering "animal" to mean the same thing as "mammal"; considering plants to have never been alive; not considering human beings to be animals. . . the same mistakes, over and over again. Unless you want to extend the verdict of "can't be all that smart if he could get things this basic wrong" to everyone who's ever been on WML-- including the contestants, who never object either-- I don't think this should be taken as a signal that anyone is overestimating John's intelligence. It remains surprising to me every time it happens, predictable as it is, because I consider him otherwise so clearly so very intelligent, and almost always spot-on in his moderating of the answers..
@MrJoeybabe25
@MrJoeybabe25 9 жыл бұрын
What's My Line? I understand your point, Gary, and I don't really mean to make a generic point about John's intelligence (I think I formed it more as a question, as Alex would like) but I'm sure you've spoken with people or read books where such an obvious piece of information is wrong that one might call into question the general soundness of all of the other information you may get from that source. As for John Daly, that is almost certainly not true, but it is a little worrisome when he misses an easy one. Although I know PHD's who are genius' but bad on dates, and I'm a college dropout and pretty good one dates, so I may be a bit unfair sometimes.
@WhatsMyLine
@WhatsMyLine 9 жыл бұрын
Joe Postove What also puzzles me is that there's never any reference to viewers writing in about these obvious, basic mistakes about biology. At some point in the 1950s there was a show where John gave an incorrect answer on a pretty technical point concerning worms, and addressed the error, which was pointed out in viewer mail, on the next show. But no one in the audience ever wrote in to correct the obvious, not-technical errors made over and over again? How about the time John ruled lobsters to be fish? They must have gotten mail on these things. . . but never a mention of it on air after the worm contretemps.

WML discovered Woody Allen for the panel way back in 1963 when he was still fairly owlish. Arlene was not too far from the mark to say he was the funniest comedian of that time. Cute, too, in that nerdy sort of way when he was young. Who suspected in 1965 that he would turn into a major industry making movies clear into his Seventies?? The only reason I remember Pamela Mason's misguided 1966 appearance on the panel is that Woody Allen was the mystery guest -- and that is the funniest Woody Allen appearance on WML. Stay tuned

You can see his deterioration between his panel gig on February 3, 1957 and video of him as one of four mystery guests on February 14, 1965. He truly degenerated. Fifty years ago I caught every new movie Woody turned out. Sleeper made us all fans for life until that SOB took his wife's daughter. That was the end for me.

@tinwoods Good question. I guess knowing how he treated his wife by sleeping with her daughter and then how her daughter treated her has eviscerated the pleasure I used to get from his work. I see him acting in Sleeper and he's not funny now that I know what a jerk he is.

@sandrageorge3488 No, he didn't. They never lived in the same house together either. He was never a parental figure. Mia Farrow is a liar, and she was sleeping with Sinatra while dating Allen. Side note- Woody is still married to the gal in question. They've been married for almost 30 yrs now. And, I say, good for them. And Woody is a genius. We should be proud of him as Americans! I can't phantom the smallish minds of some.

Enought libeling Dorothy. She is dead and can't defend herself. Frankly, she pulled more rabbits out of hats on this show than anyone. Her worst show is Arlene's best show.Why are commenters on these WML shows always so "astute" at picking up on Dorothy's every word to criticize her, though often disguised in the name of pity, but always so deaf on other panelists' and celebrity challengers' obvious character issues. I dare say there is more evidence against Woody Allen than against Dorothy, yet comments for the 6 episodes of WML with him as the challenger or the ones with him as a panelist have nary a speculation on the subject of child molestation. Arlene Francis was hardly the mainstream star actress they make her out to be. Her comment that Woody is funnier than anyone is no surprise. He is jewish and her husband is jewish, and a small time wannabe actor/producer, and no doubt he told her how funny Woody is. Jews don't think gentiles are funny cause they recently made and appeared in droves in a documentary movie to tell us so. The comments for the shows with Woody Allen never allude to the future accusations of child molestation. Anyone who would marry their partner's adoptive child has major, major issues with sexual attraction to say the least. A recent survey shows 4 out of 5 convicted child molesters think Woody is guilty. They should know.

The two situations are not comparable. No one writes comments disputing Allen's conduct or its inappropriateness. There is also nothing in his appearances from this era on this show that gives evidence for or disputes what happened many years later. With Dorothy, whose death was due to substance abuse, there is ample evidence for those not in denial, right in these videos, of her struggles. But conspiracy theorists, such as those who post anti-Semitic diatribes in the comments here, deny what is readily apparent both on screen and the reasons for some of her absences, deny the evidence of the substance abuse because they deny that this was how she died, and once the facts are dismissed out of hand, they offer alternative non-fact based theories for her death.

@@44beanie If you're talking about Woody Allen, I don't know him. If you're talking about Allen Ludden, well thankfully, you'd be the only one on the PLANET who feels THAT way!

Sorry guys for the late reply but I do not know anything about mystery guest of this episode, Mr. Woody Allen and I do not want to know either. I am not interested in him. And I do not want to know about Miss Dorothy's illness. Could we please give her some space now? She was dead for long times. Whatever was her problems or whatever happened with her were long gone and mostly forgotten. Please guys let's enjoy the show for the show's sake. Thanks.
