In this video we take a look at the mine workings of Wheal Peevor, which is a disused mine site north of Redruth in Cornwall, UK.
Wheal Peevor dates back to the early 1700s when the area was first worked for copper.
The site would be reached by the great county adit in 1793 which enabled costs to be reduced on pumping and de watering.
The mine would then be operated more economically at depth where it would go on to be worked for both tin and wolfram before finally shutting for good in the early 1900s.
In this video we explore Sir Fredericks pumping shaft which would have originaly reached a depth of 311m.
Sadly the water table is quite high at the moment so there were few workings to be seen. This is a first time explore by us so we were not really sure what we were going to find.
Hopefully you still enjoyed this video and please do not copy anything you have seen in this explore. Mines can be incredibly dangerous places and the idea of this and all my similar videos is to share with you the sights underground without putting yourselves in any danger.
Thanks for watching and don't forget to subscribe.
If you have not seen them yet there are many other mine exploring videos on my channel.

Two were in pretty good shape the other two may well be fox food but at least they have a better chance up top.

Two flew off, one sat there and refused to move while a walker picked one up and took it home to give some food so I least a couple made it. They certainly had better chance up top than left behind.

Always wanted a look down there so thanks for the opportunity. I know I’ve read that Jack Trounson was involved with the last attempt to check Peevor for possible reopening. The shaft they looked at was choked and in an attempt to remove it with explosives all they achieved was to blow the choke further down the shaft. Can’t remember which shaft it was without digging the books out though.

Nine one rescuing the pigeons, and also the way you kept that as a surprise in the editing. Amazing to think of the workers back in the days when that mine was being created and worked. Thanks for the technical info too.

At a change of angle in the shaft surely you were looking at just an angle bob chamber rather than a balance bob, hence the 3 heavy timbers to which the hinge would be fixed. For such an awkward explore down such a shaft it's a well made and informative video.
@BenoCam
@BenoCam 2 ай бұрын
Yes I was all confused and not seen many angle bobs before. Most of the mine shafts he have here are vertical so it’s an unusual one

There are shafts at Ding Dong Mine near Pendeen which are open, and with stone-lined collars, which may be worth a look? Also Higher Bal Shaft (Guide Shaft) at Levant, which is the one with the massive retaining wall beside the road above Levant proper. The shaft is gridded over, has gated access from the road, and underlies at a steep angle beneath the engine house.

A short but really interesting video Ben! Shaft seemed to get dryer as you went down and nice to see underground balance pit and still bits of timber there.I spotted the concrete before you said about it! Probably done in the last working in the 30s That slot in the rock may go back to when they up graded the engine. Looking forward to your return visit in the summer!👍👍

First visited this trio in 2014 and while peering through the grille a load of pigeons rushed out of a hole beside the grille and made me jump. Seems their antecedents are still around. Think the shaft can be readily classed as an "ass twitcher" ; looks like you were well done in by the time you got back to the collar! Always like your vids as they are good quality and not jerking all over the shop like some!

When I was checking out Peevor I thought well that shaft is definitely off limits! I wonder where that tiny coffin level went, and why it's there, seems at odds with the otherwise more modern mine.
@BenoCam
@BenoCam 4 ай бұрын
I think that’s the middle adit or shallow adit maybe. It’s collapsed one way and very very narrow the other but it’s possible with some digging may lead to some older shallow workings. Unfortunately the air down there is very poor for any kind of manual work. You may find you breathe all the oxygen up and struggle to get back out. 😬

Sounds deep ! Assuming it’s mostly underwater now? Coal mines tend to be pretty bad for gas especially after they close. They tend to seal them up pretty well for that very reason

Also, did you mean it when you said 45°? It looked a lot steeper than that on the map you showed, unless of course it wasn't to scale. I mean the part where it becomes disgonal obviously. I thought the map looked more like about 70°.

Awesome footage! The descent looked like a videogame. Since it's flooded, does that imply something about the County Adit? That the drainage to it is blocked here, or somewhere else? Also watch yourself for signs of bird flu. It is still about apparently.
@BenoCam
@BenoCam 4 ай бұрын
Cheers, yes it almost looks a bit green screen cgi the drop in 🤣 The mine should be connected to county adit but the fact the water is 20m higher than it should be implys that the connection through may have collapsed and only a small amount drains through now. I know it is explorable in summer so will have to retry then. As for the pigeons … I did think that at the time 😬 they just looked so sad down there waiting to die, and I wore gloves and washed my hands well when I came out 💪🤣
