Some time ago I found a different approach in another vid. A commenter shared this method to check the dishing: 1. Put your wheel on its side on top of two equal supports. I use two identical cups on a level table, under opposite sides of the rime -or tyre if it's on). 2. Then you see how far the axle end is from the surface of the table. You can use pretty much anything to gauge this: stacked coins, other small flat objects will do. 3. When you're happy, you just flip the wheel around and see how far the other axle end is now from the spacers. This will show how different each end is. Then you can adjust your spoke tension to bring them to the same exact distance to the centre of the axle.

I made a dishing tool by cutting cheap 4' level (aluminum I beam shape) i found and cut it to 26" and two 3" pieces then bolted them to the ends and I have a few small 1/4" plywood squares to reduce gap then I just eyeball it. Works on 700 and 26" rims. Works great looks OK too.

You don't need a wheel dishing tool... use a bicycle frame tube and brake caliper to be your reference to make your wheel centered.... you don't even have to have a truing stand either, though it helps, but can do it with using your eye ballz and hands

seems like you could prop the rim up horizontally on a table and then just measure the distance from the nut to the table's surface (and then flip it over and compare).

You don’t need a dishing tool. Just take one arm off your truing stand and check both sides of wheel.

Everything fantastic & what looks to be a great & simple home made tool totally fit for its purpose, only flaw is in showing how to use both tools....theres no need to locate it over the axle or set a 2mm or so gap... simply run each contact flush with rim & axle on each wheel side. You do it with you eye not sound. Graham ProBikeMechanicUK

I have experienced a weird problem. Even if i dish my wheel perfectly, after installing the wheel, when I give a look from standing behind the bike, it felt like rear wheel is 2 to 3mm offset to one side of the seat-stay or if i look while i am riding, from the upside at that angle i can easily compare it from the seat tube perspective, that rotating wheel looks still offset to one side. While it was centered perfectly with dishing tool. I then dish it using seat tube as a reference point and centered it perfectly in the middle. My bike was a giant fathom hardtail. With 29x2.25 ikon tyre. I don't know if it helps in any way....The frame has a uncommon dropout for a QR hub frame. It has 141x10mm dropout. But came with 135x10mm hub (giant tracker sport hub) what should I do? Does Riding with unevenly dished wheel cause me any trouble in the long run? I forgot to mention, i just gave one full turn of that sided spokes. I mean, though uneven, they aren't super offset.

Maybe I am missing something, couldnt a truing stand do the same measurement? I am asking because I want to center my wheels and consider buying a truing stand. Though, I am pretty I will buy a truing stand nonetheless. Side note, do you have an alternative for the use of a 26inch wheel?
@stevenleffanue
@stevenleffanue 4 жыл бұрын
Yes you can use truing stand to dish wheels but the stand needs to be set up for it.
@Ronald-qj5nx
@Ronald-qj5nx 3 жыл бұрын
I flip the wheel around in the truing stand to check if the rim is centred. If it is centred, you will not have to realign the truing indicators as the rim will be in the same place either way

Possibly more accurate to just use a section of an old wheel, they are pennies anyway.

That mains pressure rated hard poly pipe (blue stripe) is not all that easy to come by, and rather pricey too. Easier to find anywhere in the world is 20mm or 3/4" nominal pvc pipe (usually white) which can also be softened and bent by a hot air gun in the same way. A propos of your rim low spot jacking tool, which I love, the word you are looking for to describe deformed/metal is "yielded". I'm an engineer but I'm not half as creative as you are sir.

Why does it have to be a bow shaped one? What's wrong with it being straight with two blocks for legs at either end ? Is accuracy the issue here?

oz cycle angles between flat ends and circular ends should matter?
@mainzman7239
@mainzman7239 6 жыл бұрын
As long as the 3 contact points remain in the same position relative to each other as you check both sides it doesn't matter if the angles are different. It's only the position of those contact points that matters. A very nice video, thanks for taking the time to show us these tips. You just got a new subscriber : )
