Me: watches wheelchair fencing for the first time to see what it’s like. Me 10 seconds in: sees both competitors standing and walking Me again: infers that they have mobility issues anyway so don’t come at me

Damn this is inspiring! Always loved swordsmanship and fencing. I were even starting Kendo just before I paralyzed. This is something that I REALLY wanna do after I graduate, as I thought there's no way that wheelchair fencing exists. I already fight with sabres, bastards and even katanas/shotos against my friend who actually practices medieval swordsmanship and can use footwork as he's "normal". Still I manage to be even with him and win even long fights by using different techniques is different situations while moving my chair with one hand when I see oppoturnity for such :P

I'm confused, why are they using wheelchairs when they both have working legs?

Maybe one of these legs is prosthetic, maybe some kind of atrophy, maybe any other thing. Disability doesnt have to be visible to exist

chris green Philly Being ambulatory is not the same as being able to fence on your feet. There might be a neurological issue going on that's not evident, but that has been properly evaluated.

+homfencing very true, it appeared that one of the guys had a prosthetic leg but that's just a guess. you know they have to have beast like core/upper body strength to be able to throw their weight around like that. impressive, nuff' said.

nick kirschner Well, they can't wear the prosthetic in the chair, but definitely agreed on the core strength. See if you can find the men's team foil bronze match between Italy and Hong Kong. One of the Hong Kong team has no left arm at all past the bicep...so no arm to help him move....it's ALL core!

So people that can walk sit in a wheelchair for fun and to be able to participate in wheelchair fencing. Seems legit I do get it. They have some kind of disability, but still the purpose of the wheelchair is completly gone and the whole thing to me subjectively looks stupid especially if you consider other people actually need such wheelchairs to be able to get from A to B.

I think the point is that these athletes are unable to (competitively, at least) do regular fencing, and the wheelchair just serves to make people with differing degrees of disability on the same level. The same effect could be gotten by any other position which renders the athletes' disabilities irrelevant. The wheelchair is simply the most effective across all the different types of disability. There is competitive wheelchair fencing with actual wheelchair users (Such as myself); you will likely find this in Category C (This is for those with the greatest impairments to mobility and strength) or even B. Sorry if I'm ranting, it's just that I am a wheelchair fencer (I would be in Category C, but I don't compete), so this is rather close to my heart.

That said, I'm not sure why a regular chair wouldn't work for Category A (it would need a bar on the fencer's left, so he can use it to push/pull himself around).

They might have cerebral palsy, or some other condition that makes it impossible for them to fence able-bodied. Not all disabilities are easily seen.
