It's now 20 years since the very first series of Wheeler Dealers was aired presented by Mike Brewer and Edd China, and we thought it was an opportune time to see if we could find out what happened to those early cars after they were sold.
The second series was still a low budget affair, with Mike & Edd only had £2000 to buy and restore a classic car - remember cars and parts were a lot cheaper in 2004!
Originally WD was serialised in 30 minute episodes, with 2 per car, and these episodes of series 2 featured:
1977 MGB GT, reg no. BIW6262
1969 Predator Beach Buggy built from a VW Beetle, reg no UPW450H

Good digging on this one! There are lies, damned lies and then there’s television.

The beetle was Edds. My mate knows Edd and helps out from time to time on the show. Why can't they just be honest! At least it seems to be more transparent now.

Really interesting Oscar. You definitely can't believe all you see on the car resto shows. I have been an amateur restorer for many years, and unless I am particularly unlucky, which is quite possible, once you start work on an old car, it ALWAYS goes from bad to worse. So, how do the shows manage to finish the cars in such a small time frame? Answer, they don't. The eagle-eyed viewers amongst us may spot new parts appearing on cars on Wheeler Dealers that are never mentioned on camera. This is because during and after filming the content for the show, the cars were handed over to other people, particularly Paul Brackley, who then had to get them into a fit state to pass an MOT and sell. I mean, why does Car SOS insist on carrying on with the Tim Shaw parts blagging nonsense? It's an insult to intelligence. He supposedly blags his way in to a company, unannounced, but with a full camera and sound crew in tow!

Crikey, these have more twists and turns than a British soap opera. Next you'll be telling us Edd wouldn't know which way to loosen a bolt and Mike has never sold a car 😂. Enjoying the series and thank you for the extensive research you are doing👍. Be interesting if Mike ever sees these whether he will comment 🤔

Im loving these videos thanks for taking the time to research these so we dont have to 🤣 when you get to the range rover in series 3, an interesting observation is the rear door that was 'damaged' when they got the car was the clearly a different door as it was the only really dirty panel on the car and the one they replaced it with was literally the original one put back on😂

I too suspected that FTD243J had some story. If you see the car when shown, it's not that filthy. It has some hay on it, but looks too clean for a real barn find, and you can see that the number plate is already hanging on the wall behind Edd. PS: Little trivia: that other number plate on the wall, WER652L is the number plate of Edd's first ever car, it was a yellowish Beetle. He says that in an interview with Alex in Car Throttle.
@oscarsgarage447
@oscarsgarage447 8 ай бұрын
Ah yes, the hanging number plate! I noticed that as well, so I checked it against pictures of the one on the Beetle when it was collected and it appeared to be the same one (holes and damage in same place). I also went through the other episodes around it to see if it had been there before, but it hadn't. Video was already very long so didn't include this bit! See what lengths I go to for your entertainment....!

2 years ago I bought an mgb of Barry pike who owns smr classics, he appears in the wheelers dealers episode at the beginning. I asked him about the show when I was down collecting my car and he told me that he bought the mgb back after wheeler dealers was finished with the car, he then mentioned that the car was then sold to someone in the uk who was sadly killed in the 2015 Tunisia attack. That was all the info I remember receiving from him about the car.

Great video. Looking forward to when you get to the classic Range Rover they did the LPG conversion on. Mike buys it and when he goes to view it the chap is cleaning it on the drive but the rear door and the tail gate are dirty as. They both were rusty so Ed’s says just replace them you will find some in a scrapyard. Asif by magic Mike goes to a scrapyard and finds the door and tail gate in the same colour and when edd fits them even the pin line down the side matches 🧐🤔I love wheeler dealers and I’m loving these video you guys are doing. Keep it up 👍

One thing I noticed was most of the wheel refurbes they do , the tyres are always brand new but never mentioned. It’s tv so not real life. I did enjoy the early episodes rather than current mainly because they didn’t have all the fancy equipment that amateurs like me don’t have.

The original beetle floor pan got pulled out of the skip & sold, so probably got built into another car. It wasn't that bad, there was no time to shorten it. The Graphic designer for the show wanted a SWB buggy, so it was built for him.

Great channel , most of the car shows are staged , I'm in to vw and once built a buggy always remember the guy who bought the buggy was called tobin ,which I thought was an unusual name , and then caught the credits at the end and one of the production team was called tobin that's when I clicked to these shows are staged top gear jaunts, even Bruce crompton military show and others just make good TV, we always joke that Mike brewer has done time for impersonating a second hand car dealer ,

I think the reason the MGB has not gone up by much is the people who remember then in the 60s and 70s are getting a bit old to own them. peak MGB was may be a a couple of decades ago. Although due to general asset inflation they may gone up, relative to other assets they have may changed less due to their relative demand changing

What can l say the MGB and the VW beach buggy in N.S.W any modifications to the chassis on any motor vehicle including motorcycles has to have an engineer certificate and many years ago it was aud$50000 and that was many years ago and shortening a VW chassis would require an engineers certificate

How can they of made money on the mg brewer paid a 1000 the respray cost a 1000 that's 2000 then the wheels and the seat covers .so they lost on that car .but they always used to do that .they would put a new full set of tyres and they wouldn't mention the tyres in the final price .I never believed in any sale they made all a setup.
