I love to watch these video's. I was a CnC machinist for a hydraulics manufacturer for 20 years. I ran there Hard Turn department, all of the parts that I worked on were super small and had to be run to super tight tolerances (one part was +-.000050). We used Hardinge GT lathes and had Epson robots for loading and unloading of parts. We had to use diamond inserts because we did finish machining of the heat treaded parts. Most of the parts we were making a seating area or a bore that have to last over 1,000,000 cycles before we can even sell them. Most of the parts were run in under 1 minute with loading and unloading with the robots. With that setup I ran 4 lathes at a time. I love watching the other side of machining, the size of the parts that you work on always make me laugh, to me they seem so big to be almost comical.

I miss machining aluminum bronze . It hurt so bad on the manual but it was so easy to hold tight tolerances and such a nice finish

Amazing finish on these as usual, button tools are a bit of a challenge but because of the round shape they are subject to chip thinning so in order to maintain the correct chip thickness to use the chipbreaker the feedrate needs to be a lot higher. I'm sure you've tried it before and you've got a process that works well as it is! For others who read this there's a lot of literature on sandvik coromant website which explains this, and for those who are inclined there is a formula which can be used to determine the chip thickness
@ChrisMaj2 жыл бұрын
I did try it and I think the problem was that the tool was sticking out over 2.5" (64 mm) and I could not plunge the tool deep enough to break the chip without chatter. But as you said, if you have a rigid setup they work really well. Thanks for watching. Chris.
@demondude3600002 жыл бұрын
@@ChrisMaj yes a setup that isn't stiff enough to handle the pushing isn't helpful, have you tried the round inserts in a shorter holder for removing bulk material from the OD? I'd imagine you'd be able to get pretty impressive results on parts where you're taking a lot of material out

Bronze is very tough to machine in production. Great job. I am starting a machine shop with my father. We want to focus on turning only. At what point do you decide to put something on the VTL vs. a horizontal Lathe? Is it diameter of chuck or simply length of part? Or perhaps rigidity considerations. Most likely we will start with a vertical but I would love to be able to convince the investors of a VTL. Let me know your thoughts.

Oh I was also going to comment have you ever used a peck cycle? Try it with the round insert and slow your rpm down, it will break the chips great I used to do it with a 1 inch round grooving tool for big flanges

What is your machine pressure are you using to hold the finished side with hard jaws?
@ChrisMaj2 жыл бұрын
I'm assuming you are talking about chuck jaws pressure? It's a 4-jaw independent chuck. The OD wasn't that critical and the jaws don't really leave any marks.

I tried 0.25" grooving tool, but with 2.50" stick out the tool snapped in half. I've also tried round insert but for that you need high feed and deep cuts in order to break the chips. With my setup and the depth I needed to do just didn't work.
