My father passed very recently. He used to be an armory mechanic at Wheelus sometime in the 60's. Said he enjoyed his time there and his trips into Tripoli, though wasn't particularly thrilled when McNamara extended his stay! I'm glad I was able to take a glimpse into part of his life, in some sense, with this footage. Thank you.

I lived in Tripoli… my stepdad was stationed there at the AFB… so many times I wanted to go back there! Remember going to the Italian beach, miles away. Going to their fair! I loved when the ice cream truck came by… best ice cream ever. Herds of camels would pass within inches of our villa, as they were headed to market on Fridays!Such good memories! Stationed at Tinker AFB, then Wheelus, retired at Shaw AFB, SC.. Military Life is the best… imo

My late father (Jack Weston) also served there between '64 and '66, but as part of the RAF contingent, RAF IDRIS. He gave us kids a great life being British forces abroad. I know nothing of the base, apart from its vast size and the extent of its facilities which, being American, were extremely well resourced. We lived in Tripoli, on a street called Shiara Gebara, and next to the US Embassy! Every Saturday, herds of camels were driven past our compound to arrive at the market, and immediate slaughter. We were so lucky, though we didn't know it at the time. I have school photos of me and my class, together with our teacher, Miss Flatley. Thanks for sharing this. Regards to all.

My father was stationed there in the late 50s. This looks like his photos. He kept that crew cut going for another 60 years.

Hi Mike, Thanks for the movie.;good memories.My wife and I were stationed at Wheelus 2/64-2/67 . I was an A/1C airborne radio operator in the 58th Air Rescue Sq (changed to Rescue and Recovery Sq in Jan 66). The Air Evac you showed is a C-118, and yes they regularly flew in from Rhine-Main (many babies of military in Germany were actually born in the Wheelus hospital, via those C-118 flights). At the 1:35 time in your film (shown between the two F-100s taxiing) there is a HC-97G (shown from the tail) that belonged to the 58th Air Rescue Sq. Our HC-54Ds were replaced by the 97's in 1964. In 1966 we began replacing them with HC-130Hs. We still had HU-16Bs during that whole period.Thanks again for the movie.

My family lived in Tripoli '63 -'70. Dad worked for Esso but we spent a lot of time on base. My brother graduated Wheelus High School, I attended 10th grade there. Loved the Oasis snack bar, movie theatre, swimming pool etc... I was in a pop music band with three airmen, name of "Thursday Morning" We played the Officers Club once. Got evacuated on a C-130 to Naples during the Six Day War, June '67. Good Times

@garysanders8000

Yes. We were at Wheelus 63-65. My father drove us to Leptis Magna where we spent the day. Some of the best Roman ruins in the world that most Americans will never have the chance to see. Leptis Magna, along with Oea and Sabratha, were the 3 Roman cities of the Roman province Tripolitania (the land of 3 cities). Leptis Magna was a major seaport on the Mediterranean in it's heyday

Our family made the trek to Leptis Magna. I was really young so only remember it from old photos. We were in Wheelus about 59-63. My late dad was an NCO on the flightline. My parents made friends with some of the British Army contingent; one of them was a very nice bloke who eventually became a priest. I only remember his first name was Eric. They kept in touch for many years afterward and reunited for a visit when our family was stationed at Rhein-Main, Germany, 1970-74.

Thanks for sharing. I was stationed there in 65/66. This brought back old memories. I worked in Civil Engineering, (Liquid Fuel Maintenance) shop of having a civilian boss, three GI's, and five locals. Had reins of the whole base, on and off.
