While Burns was up in Eaton County for the Erick, I decided to head over to Dowagiac since they do a full test for the statewide drill. Right at 1pm, the sirens sounded in wail. I didn't include this, as, for some reason, the a**holes at the parks department felt that it was necessary to mow the grass....in March. Thus the wail video was trashed. Hi/Lo was sounded at 1:10 and functions as the all-clear. Also, the rotator was having a bit of trouble and at times only does a 120 degree arc. WSS maintains this system so I wouldn't be surprised if these were converted to UltraVoices in the near future, especially since they already have 3 Modulators. Their normal test time is every Saturday at noon.

Nice! You dont hear many vortexes running Hi Lo, much less for 3 minutes and on a 435hz tone generator. This is quite the gem indeed

It's because it's designed to do multiple 180° rotations NOT a full 360°

This 4004 has a custom rotation pattern. Whelens can be set so that the rotation can be governed. There's switches inside the rotator, and the factory can set it so that the head will only rotate to a certain point before going back to home. I've seen one other video on here I think of another Whelen just like this one. The Whelens with the custom rotation patterns are rare, but they are around.

normally whelen sirens like that one would spin a full 360 then back that one is doing a 180

The more recent Whelen sirens as you will notice from other videos have totally different rotators and aren't designed to do 360° ratations but instead multiple 180° rotations instead

@@stephensnell1379 No still qwrong. The rotator was always designed to do a full 360 then rotate back around. You can set the rotation so it will only rotate 45 degrees, 90, 180, or 360 degrees. Please stop giving wrong info. You are not smart.

This one is at Rotary Park. They also have two more, one at Railroad and Prairie Ronde and another at Paul and Grove streets

Nice catch with the 435hz hi lo. and yeah, that is weird that the rotator stops before it makes a full round. Wonder what is causing that?

Dumb ass lawn mowers. My mom runs a landscaping business, and i help her alot, so i know when is a good time to do it. Mid march, unless its warm, dry, and in the mid 70s, and the grass is actually growing, we dont cut. And trust me, it is almos NEVER those conditions in mid March. Plus, bagging grass is a bad idea.

In Whelen's rotating sirens, there are switches in the rotor assembly. They are typically factory set at the home position, so when the speaker array rotates around as far as it can go, the switches reverse and send the array back around, and so on. When a dealer orders a rotating siren from the factory, they can custom order the unit to have it's switches set for a certain degree of rotation, in cases of needing to cover only a specific/small area, etc.

In Dowagiac What do they use hi lo for ? Or wail?

Wail for tornado warnings, Hi Lo for all clear. On SWA, wail is tested at 1:00, Hi Lo at 1:10.

Yesterday I went to Dowagiac to record he rotary park Whelen Vortex for the statewide Tornado drill and all it did was only wail and hi-lo did not activated but wail started right at 1
