Yeah I mean, when my 5 year old went in for a root canal, I knew he'd get needles. So I told him that lol, I'm gonna be real with him. But then the next step is explaining why and what's gonna happen. He was scared and nervous, but did it and did great. I never understood when parents try and lie to their kids like they're stupid😂 I understand you're trying to make it better, but a lot of the time it's just going to make it worse

It's the same thing with adults. Adults don't have your level of intellect when it comes to dental care or any kind of health care, you have to explain it in a way that they understand.

I fully agree with explaining things to children, and helping them understand things - depending on the child’s age, and what’s happening… Trying to reason with five-year-olds or when they’re just trying to push boundaries and rile you up is futile.

Thank you for being so kind to kids. I had horrible teeth as a child and had to have dental surgery a couple times. Some of the dentists would ignore me or tell me that it doesn't hurt, until I started having my grandma come in. She saw that tears were coming down my eyes and my toes were curling in pain. They tried to tell her it didn't hurt me either, but she wasn't having any of it. How I was treated then is why I rarely go to the dentist now. You're changing kids lives to not have to live in pain due to fear of the dentist. Good job!

Any doctor that starts telling me the pain I’m feeling doesn’t actually exist I immediately, IMMEDIATELY lose respect for. You can tell me that something isn’t SUPPOSED TO hurt. That can mean there’s an issue to uncover. I’m experiencing a symptom that we can manage and discuss. But that doctor doesn’t have my fucking nervous system. They have zero right to tell me what hurts and what doesn’t. I don’t care if that part of the body is dead and numb to everyone else in the 20 years they’ve practiced. Pain is a signal that something is afoot. So get to steppin’ to figure it out!

Most people think I’m too old to be scared of needles (I’m 15), but my fear is always manageable when someone just talks me through it. Once, I had to get my blood drawn and the doctor gave me a bunch of random blood facts the whole time. I just wish more people would care about how scary things like this can be (especially to a child who doesn’t understand what is happening or why it hurts) I guess I mean to say thank you and I hope I come upon someone like you in the future.

Same. My childhood dentist basically told me to man up when I threw a fit and didn't want a baby tooth pulled as a child. Then as a young adult when I needed an adult tooth pulled and I screamed because the novocaine hadn't set in yet, he told me I was lying and just being dramatic like when I was little. Walked out white and shaking, with everyone in the office watching me with concern. Did not go back.

I went to a dentist when I was around 9 or 10 that clearly had no idea how to handle children lol… the kid next to me was crying nonstop and the lady working on his teeth kept getting mad at him. for me, they removed teeth that didn’t need to be removed because they damaged them, and they gave me a filling that was too big for my tooth to the point where I needed a root canal, which is a whole other story lol I had to get a bunch of stuff done the past yr or two, and literally praying nonstop and letting myself fidget with my hands (in a non distracting way) are the only things that considerably helped w/ my fear of the dentist

I’m so glad there are dentists like you out there. I’m not gonna lie, I’m a big baby at the dentist and have been since I was little. When I was in 6th grade, I had to have a couple teeth extracted in order to get braces. I was super nervous, first time getting teeth pulled, never even had a cavity before this. I was nervous & crying. They took me back and told my mom to stay out in the waiting room. As soon as I sat down, our family dentist tried to give me the numbing shot. This obviously made me freak out even more and as I was bawling my eyes out, I still vividly remember to this day at almost 35 years old, her leaning down next to my ear and telling me if I didn’t stop crying and let her give me the numbing shot she wouldn’t let me see my mom! Well, that traumatic, psycho manipulation didn’t work on me. I ended up going to an oral surgeon and they gave me some anxiety meds & knocked me out. But, I never forgot what she said or that experience and I still get nervous going to the dentist today!

I developed trauma from the dentist as a child. I repressed most of it but what I do remember is not good to say the least. I didn’t go to the dentist for years due to a mix of parental neglect and never asking to go even when I knew I should. When I did go again I found that a lot of dentists can tell when their patient wasn’t lucky enough to have a doc as good as this one. My x-rays and demeanor definitely don’t project “guy who has a wonderful history with dentistry”. I started weeping as soon as I laid down for a root canal at 17. The dentist did breathing exercises with me and explained every single thing he was doing as he did it. Asked permission consistently. Then when I had to get a tooth pulled years later the dentist was so kind and encouraging. She was laser focused on my reactions and advocated for me when I wasn’t sure if I could do it for myself. I feel like the practice (like most) has evolved from a callous “get it done and get it out” approach to a system that understands that going to the dentist is a very mentally heavy task. I’m so glad for this. No one, especially not children, should be harmed by a medical professional of all people. Do no harm applies to the brain as well. This video made me really happy and hopeful for future generations. Good on those of us who know empathy is everything.

I appreciate his direction in helping kids through dentistry because my brother when we were younger was slapped in the face by his dentist for crying & saying it hurt! This affects not only my brother (who physically was put through it) but me as well from hearing my brother’s experience. I’m now 28 & just now finding trust in dentist again. Thanks for your kind and patient approach to children’s care because I don’t think a lot of people think of how long a single moment to (them) affects a child through their life. :) love ya
