He didn't expect them to win, he expected them to lose, he wanted them to learn the difference in their current skill level and the actual pros. You can see that initially all of the players think they have a chance, but eventually, their confidence dies and that's exactly what Ego wanted.

Yeah it’s not like Man City playing a university team. They would be far far worse. Because there’s no education based football programmes or scholarships in the uk like places like Japan or the US. Uni teams in the uk play on public parks to an audience of 2 men, a dog and maybe a players girlfriend. And they only play other uni teams. And local ones at that. Even if the best uni team in the country played even a semi professional side from say the 6th or 7th tier of English football they would still get annihilated.

The story is that matters and the storytelling of coming up with a comeback... besides, this anime should inspire you to think different about leveling up and how to play any sport. The fact that all soccer players are actually strikers... Never thought of that... It actually makes sense that the playing of soccer, is the way it is now.
