They are different instruments but being a keyboard player doesn't make you less than a pianist. Just look at the incredible keyboard players in Nightwish and Dream theatre.

some keyboards (and also electric pianos) do have velocity sensitivity - meaning the keys are sensitive to force. most also have a sustain pedal.

There are keyboards that are weighted (meaning the notes are as heavy as normal piano keys) and keyboards that are touch sensitive (meaning the harder/softer you press the keys the volume changes) and put these together on an 88 key keyboard, add some pedals, and that keyboard can do everything a piano can (except projection)

you can actually buy pedals for some keyboards, and a lot of them have a touch mode meaning if you press the key softly, it will play quietly

When actually playing, nothing feels better then a real piano vibration wise, but assuming you have all the bells and whistles, midi will almost always be a million times times better in the context of a final recorded piece imo. There are variables, but technology is only getting better and harder to differentiate when used by a skilled player

piano players have all the skill of a music theorist, synth players have knack for synthesizing amazing patches to play. imo synth is better because you're taking something and adding modulation so much to it that playing one note becomes a symphony

As a kid I played the organ, then synths in the eighties. When I started learning piano I was like, "What is this strange device that can't hold or bend a note and pushes back on my fingers?" After learning some boogie woogie riffs and playing for a weekend showing of Grease: "I can't move my left hand anymore! WHAT'S WRONG WITH MY LEFT HAND?!?" BTW, I now gig with both a weighted piano keybed and a synth. I play so hard that I still bleed after most every show, and I love it.

I have a keyboard, but I still call it a piano. Even though it doesn’t have strings and stuff like that, I’m still able to use pedal, and I can play as loud or as soft as I want without turning it up or down.

As someone who lives in an apartment building and can’t practice in the evenings after work and stuff, I have both a piano and a keyboard, I need the keyboard to actually get some practice sometimes. I know I’m not a pianist, like a professional, but like, there are certain things you just can’t control.

I have a DGX660. It is close enough to a piano where you can learn moderate-advanced piano songs on it and have them sound great, while also having the ability to change sound fonts, record, transpose, midi out, etc

The difference is that the MPK Mini, the device at the end, doesn’t have the full range of a piano, I understand that there can be an argument for the first two but not really the last part.

A pretty big difference I noticed is that a piano will have a good bit more resistance. It was kinda embarrassing when I went to play a piano and I couldn't get used to applying more force so playing quickly wasn't possible for me within the timeframe. Luckily it was only friends around.

I think the keyboard is fine. If you use a midi and call it a piano I'm placing a hit on you.

I actually play a keyboard. It has volume but it also has petals. I try to play a lot like a piano would play. I'm excited to learn more notes. (One more thing. Volume can change depending on how hard I hit the notes) I would also love to learn piano someday.

I learned to play with a cheap keyboard, and now I have a good one with key sensitivity and the 3 pedals. Yet I still will call myself a pianist because both my school and a English learning school I go to (English isn’t my first language) have grand pianos, and at this point I have played more at those places than at my own house. What about the times I don’t go to school since I’m in vacation? My grandma also has a grand piano at her house. The ONLY reason I don’t have a piano is because I live in a apartment at a pretty high floor and it would be hell to try to get one, so I got a keyboard because I have to practice somehow, but how I already mentioned I have played more the pianos at these places than the keyboard at my house, so I ask you, I’m a pianist? Edit: if anyone asks, I have a CDP-S360. Not the absolute best but I think is pretty good Edit(yes, again): I also don’t really get this video, wouldn’t a 88 keys keyboard with key sensitivity and the 3 pedals (mine is like that) be considered a digital piano? I’ve also seen some grand pianos that were digital. And still, there’re some people that just can’t afford to buy and maintain a piano or just don’t have space (also kinda my case). I’ve seen a lot more pretty good keyboards with all the things I mentioned earlier being cheaper than a considered cheap piano Also a side note here: who the hell plays pianissimo by turning down the volume? Keytarists are the only ones that call themselves what they really are, because we are proud of using a unique instrument such as one 💪 (when have you ever heard a keytarist call themself a pianist? It’s weird..)

Most midi controllers have velocity control tho and you can hook up a pedal, boom piano. And if you invest enough you’d get the weighted keys

It may not be a piano but you can get pretty damn close with weighted keys, velocity keys, and pedals you plug into the keyboard

As a keyboardist with a pianist friend, i can confirm, that this is what the conversation goes when we get to pianos

I play piano (self taught on a keyboard) but never said I could until I got an electric. Proud musician here that can play bass guitar (4+5 strings) , guitar (electric + acoustic) , violin , kalimba and drums (getting a kit at Christmas apparently!!) ! Sadly, at school I’m expected to learn songs quickly and preform. If you play the keyboard but can transition to a piano, use pedals, etc, I would say you are a pianist. Sadly not everyone can afford one. And the tiny pianos you get at school for computers don’t make you one.

As someone with 5 keyboards and have played grand pianos I can say the difference is the keys weights and the drawn out sound so yea very much similar

I don't know if this is the same as in other countries but in our country there are different exams and courses for those who play piano and keyboard. It's seen as two different musical instruments.

There's traditional pianos, electrical pianos and keyboards. What makes em different is that keyboards have settings making the sounds that's difficult to make on pianos easy and less keys. Electric pianos is similar to keyboards but is more sensitive and you have to push down hard to make a strong sound and push down gently to make a lower sound, it also comes with More keys than kayboards do, making it much more accurate to a piano. Also comes with electric pedal. I've really wanted a traditional piano, meaning no cheating with electrical sounds, more fixing and harder to play but also much more beautiful and magical. Sounds so much better tbh. Everything is beautiful but traditional just hits Different. I have an electric piano cuz I'm broke but I'm reaching for a real one :3

A good keyboard player and a good painist will have certain difficulties playing the other instrument (assuming they haven't done such before) but will still be very skilled at the other instrument, however a low-level painist or keyboard player most likely won't have much issue or feel much difference

Keyboards have attachments for pedals. If a keyboard had these attachments, then I think it’s fair to say that the one who plays it is a pianist
