Thanks to Dollar Shave Club for sponsoring. Go to www.dollarshaveclub.com/Lindy... to get your first starter set for $5. After that, the restock box ships standard-sized products at the usual price. Can we use science to find out why and when men flee in battle? I've had an idea.

Second, you could to a degree put this to a test in a military exercise by beforehand informing the soldiers that each one who gets shot must pay an actual fee of £10.000 pounds, if they surrender they only have to pay a £100 pund fine, and all the money collected from this will be shared between the survivors of the winning team.

I've been in LARP battles where we've broken and run. Or held. Or fought to the last. As far as I can tell the only thing that keeps them fighting is yelling and telling them to keep fighting. You know when you're about to be overrun, you know when the enemy in front of you has the advantage. If you're lucky there's someone behind keeping an eye on the rear and flanks. Unless there's a reason to hold the ground, an objective, or a reason to delay the enemy, it's always more sensible to withdraw, even if you lose a few by breaking contact and fleeing. In our game instead of dying you can literally run away or 'flee' from the battle. You'll live, but your team or warband might lose. So as far as I can tell, the only thing that keeps a unit from breaking is 'nowhere to run' last-stand or some barmy officer yelling 'hold' who you trust is aware of the wider situation.

I had an idea much like this once, which would work well in combination with some of Lindy's ideas here: As a film and TV writer I thought of a reality show for television where you take two groups of who are not war enthusiasts or re-enactors. A random sample of humanity, which gives you relatively unskewed results. Put them through several weeks of training as the first part of the show. Then pit the two groups in a series of battles based on different scenarios each time. Use the Laser system the military uses in exercises to determine casualties. Each participant has a large amount of money they gave in their game account. A large amount of money, at least ten thousand if not more. In each battle they can lose some of that money with various negative outcomes for them personally as well as their side collectively (wounded, dead, won, lost, ran away, surrender and so on). Judges, along with the commanders, can award extra money from a secondary prize pool in the form of "|medals that have cash value that goes into the awarded player’s account. Some actions can be both positive and negative, such as running away. If you run away, you cannot gain any award for your side winning that battle, if they do win but at the same time you preserve what is in your account because you pay only a small percentage penalty for running away. If you, on the other hand "die" but do so in a manner that the judges and commanders feel is worthy of a medal, then you are not charged the "death penalty" (which would be substantial in percentage of your account balance), and you would get the cash associated with that particular medal. With drone cameras and other tracking technology it would be possible to know what each player is doing every step of the way through one of these battle, and score their performance with a high degree of accuracy. It would make great TV, and it avoids the problem of getting only people with a lot of money and a keen interest in earfare from being dominating the mix of players. For both competitiveness and scientific results you want a group of average people for such a test. Sorry for any typos I missed.

Fascinating that in the same day youtuber Sherlock Hulmes posted video about LARP event, where they went to the skirmish. They had a plan how to beat the orcs, which backfired because orcs already anticipated that and countered that . . . HARD. And there you have it, players who had their characters for multiple years about to die and in all that confusion multiple players just legged it.

Lmao the dollar shave club advert in the middle is just golden. I have just rewatched an ad segment in a video rather than skipping it. The brilliance of this man. I'd definitely buy this item for the sake of this advert alone if they delivered where I live. If they didn't go sour after seeing this fit of brilliance that is and congratulated him for how good it is. "The more perceptive of you and I would say the less perceptive of you and I would extend this to those of middling perceptive abilities, may all have drawn the same conclusion which is that I am not an obvious ambassador for a company that sells men's grooming products." "They have favored me cause this, this is no ordinary handle for a razor. No no. This, I see straight away is the executive handle." "You know even the tertiary blade sometimes lets you down." "Hydrating is good of course because some people have a lot of trouble drinking water and so the only way they can get water into them is to rub it through their skin." "I know what cleanser is that just means cleaner but it sounds better." "Hawaiian ginger is like ordinary ginger but with more vovels." "Mystery citrus, I don't know, hope it's grapefruit, that's my favorite. " "Disappearing post shave dew. Are words that I've never seen in that order before. Disappearing? It evaporates? Dew? That's, that's water, right? Post shave? I understand what post shave is." "Easy shave butter. I'm a beginner to this sort of thing so I think it's appropriate that they've sent me the easy version I imagine that others of you will be able to order more advanced shave butter. Butter?" "Superbra! No, I have misread that, it's Superba. Oh it's toothpaste!... And it says peppermint kick. So there you go, Superba, for people with teeth that need a kick." "Here we have hydrating, again. Which is good. Though don't overdose on water kids." "Hair and scalp shampoo... Hair and scalp shampoo? Is that different from normal shampoo? Have I been doing it wrong all these years? Is there such a thing as just scalp shampoo? How do you use that without getting it on your hair? That must be really tricky." "Mandatory prep scrub. So there you go this one is not optional. It's mandatory." "Body cleanser. Which is calming amber and lavender. Calming amber? Is amber even a smell? Does amber smell of a thing. They have quite a wide range of products presumably if you want their panic inducing amber you can get that too." And now I have watched it several more times to get these excerpts. That segment is better than most stand up comedians' entire sets.
