Houseki no Kuni (Land of The Lustrous) is one of my all-time favorite anime and manga series. It's so gorgeous, the art is phenomenal, the music is S tier, and the storytelling is amazing. When I first reviewed it 3 years ago, I didn't have the skills to capture what is so enchanting to me about this show. As I'm approaching 100 of these little videos made, I think I'm ready to approach this title with the care it deserves.

I’m actually kinda glad that the anime didn’t blow up too much, if it did it would probably have somewhat of a toxic fandom. I’m afraid that it maintains turn out like MHA did. With the oc’s and the fandom being a biohazard wasteland of sarin gas of a fandom. With an underrated anime/manga, its chances of getting recognized by those people are a lot less, those fandoms tend to be a bit healthier then the more popular ones. Every popular anime/manga has at least that one toxic group in it.

The fact that the Houseki no Kuni combines minerology, psychology, mythology and spirituality together into one beautifully crafted masterpiece made me want to sort of be a part of that. Studio Orange is the very reason that I got into 3D modelling, so that I could bring my OC Ametrine to life, and retell the story with my own spin on it, because I love it that much. This series is such a huge inspiration to me, and it is without a doubt one of my favorite pieces of media to date

There is a japanese anime movie called "Ryuu to Sobakasu no Hime (Belle)" it was released on 2021. The interesting thing is when the main character log into the virtual world app, the animation switched into 3D/CGI, but when she back into her real life, the animation changed into 2D. I really recommended it if you like seeing full color/detailed scenery animation like from makoto shinkai/ghibli/kyoto animation

The problem of CGi is mostly the unnatural movements. Especially the pause at the start and end of movements. Sometimes the animators (are given the time to) do their job well and remove these really small artifacts, and everything is so much better. You mainly see these perfected animations in video game cinematics. Low polygon-count don't matter (if not going photorealistic), the movement is everything and the whole reason for the uncanny valley's existence.

@ThatHawksSimp

The gems are actually genderless! They have no reason to have genders because… they’re rocks lol, but some seem to lean towards a more masculine or feminine identity and appearance. For example, Phos has seemingly been more masculine leaning, whilst characters like Red Beryl and Dia are more feminine The mangaka herself has actually requested that the gems genders not be specified as a condition for serialisation, and the German translation of LOTL has as such adopted the neopronoun “xier” for the gems, as there was no German equivalent for they/them! Typically beforehand, translators have used what they felt fit the character regardless of whether or not it’s actually right for the character

The thing that makes the CG so good in this show for me is the unparalleled sense of transparency, translucence, and depth. Awesome stuff

I love how Land of the Lustrous can tell a story with subtle clues that make you wonder how deep their world goes. People often confuse world building as showing you how big the world is but is actually how to make you imagine the world on your own via careful details the artist hoped for you to catch. If you like like that type of story telling then I'd recommend Overlord since it has the deepest lore I've ever seen in an anime. I hope Scamboli reviews it at some point.

While waiting for a year without story progression (no to mention the encyclopedia which enlarges the Houseki no Kuni universe), people, especially graphomaniacs and analytics lovers like me, have been starving patiently for content. The story is incredibly good. The plot is immeasurably heartshattering and tragic, yet invigorating. That's some good science fiction right here, not gonna lie. Wish more people could read it. I stumbled across this anime quite some time ago and absolutely loved it, I'm so glad to see that somebody is giving it the praise it deserves. When I first saw it I thought it was so amazing in so many ways, I wanted to tell all my friends about it, I wanted to hail it as one of the best animes out there, that everybody should go and watch right no.... oh, wait, it just _ended in the middle of everything?_ You build absolutely everything up to the most incredible point where there are so many questions and so many new impossible things happening and so many potential future developments that the viewer's mind is packed with questions and expectations for each new episode, and then you just _leave us there??_ no resolution? Not even an end-of-season semi-wrap-up of even any of the smaller stuff? Just nothing at all? _whimper_ It literally almost felt like the anime had shattered me into a bunch of broken pieces, just like one of the characters. But there wasn't even a second season to put anything back together again. Nope. nope, nope.. I want to, but I just _can't_ recommend this to anyone. It's just not fair to do that to them. Sigh. It was so good, though... (Yes, I know that the manga exists.. someday I may go back and read it, but so much about what I loved of the anime wasn't something a manga could convey (the visuals, the music, the motions, that really made it feel both real and alien at the same time, like it totally should). Perhaps it would resolve some of the questions, but not in the way I really want to experience them.)

This anime is the best body horror I’ve ever seen, and that is not hyperbole. It’s not categorized as that, but it’s better than any other body horror film I’ve seen (and I’m a horror film fanatic who is quite familiar with Cronenberg). I felt absolute dread whenever I saw the moon people approaching. I felt legit uncomfortable whenever a gem would break into pieces. Not just the animation, but the soundtrack and storytelling all contributed to these feelings of dread. Whether it meant to be horror or not, it succeeded in doing so with flying colors.

Yes land of the lustrous and I recommend it heavily. Phos’s story has evolved so much it’s amazing. Them and the other guys (cinnabar and bort to name a couple) also change in unexpected ways. Diamond has one of my favorite stories too, as he has evolved in a way that felt really natural (ifykyk). Also as a side note, phos is not a girl, nor do they use she/her. Instead phos is referred to as he but it transitions more to they as their evolution (and gender) go hand in hand with their character evolution. “But they look like girls?” This ignores a lot of wat the creator ichikawa is doing w her work to design the characters this way. In fact, she goes on to address that mindset with a character in her story, who is forced to be a woman because of their figure and voice, no actual regard to who they are. Nitpick on my end ig, but it’ll never cease to bother me to see people ignore the gender story of lustrous, inexcusable if you have read the manga. Other than that, good video. I also want a season 2.

Does the author do her own art? Whoever does it is amazing. The manga is scarily symmetrical (You can see it tons in the anime to). From the buildings, characters, fight scenes, environment, the layout of the manga panels themselves, anything and everything can and has been symmetrical in its art at some point. I feel it draws out the eeriness that something just isn't right in the world and how Gems are often thought of as geometrical wonders.

4:58! This!! I love the exploration of this theme throughout. Every character has some sort of insecurity that they try to overcome, and it’s beautiful to watch how they interact with each other and their world with those inner conflicts. It’s also really interesting that even though they’re all gems, they feel a lot more authentic as characters to me than a lot of human characters in anime these days. Your editing is incredible btw! I love that you utilize your favorite soundtracks, and that your videos feel a lot like a story being told. I just feel a lot of genuine passion from you, and I think it’s incredibly well reflected in your work. I relate so much to your taste in anime/manga so I love seeing your reviews. There are a gazillion of amazing worlds out there; in Harry Potter we have a secret society of wizards, in Beastars lions and cats are politicians instead of humans, Bleach, Attack on Titan, Fullmetal Alchemist, Skyrim, Avatar, Star Wars, these are worlds that are made by a magician because the ability to create brand new universes with their own sets of rules, politics, and aesthetics, has to be magic. I just love this line.

The very first idea of a "talking crystal" was seen in some episodes of Star Gate SG1 back in a day when Colonel O'neil stumbled upon a planet barren wasteland full debris, ruins and crystals and they thought the inhabitants were wipe out but they turned out to be wrong because the very inhabitants of the planets are "crystals" with conciousness extraterrestrial life or "alien" if you will and they rescue them from oppression of Reptillians, they use Star Gate to travel millions of light years from earth in a minutes, The author of that manga did a deep research about crystals, i also recommend watching Star Gate SG1, all of ideas from Isekai as well has a lot of references from Star Gate franchise.
