Is it ok when celebrities wear metal band shirts? For example Kendall Jenner in a Slayer shirt, Justin Bieber in an Iron Maiden shirt, Kanye West wearing a Cradle Of Filth shirt, and all the other examples of celebrities wearing metal shirts. What about Gary Holt of Exodus' "Kill A Kardashian" shirt?

Finn Mckenty... If you are going to throw all of us Metalheads under the bus for defending our music, its because you don't like it. But others should not hear you slam heroic musicians that stand up to the cancer that is trying to destroy our genre's community. This isn't about wearing clothes, its about us not being able to identify one another anymore. Sound cheesy? It should because this is what thugs I heard say and it seems to be working as of 2023. The less people talk to each other and become friends (from originally starting a conversation due to wearing an underground Metal shirt), the less Metal bands get formed. So, the only source left is just the internet to find random band members as strangers they might not befriend easily, since concerts are too loud to try to talk. These thugs (that people like the Kardashians love) hate you Whites to death and you don't get it. Its not just a few people that want the music gone forever... Not even Dee Snider, Gary Holt, and Dani Filth get it because its not easy to get... This is all just a sinister agenda so Metalheads get un-inspire to start a conversation with a potential comrade and ends up speaking to "posers" instead. This creates a more anti-social problem on purpose within the Metal community. Then there are others that said something like "if we start wearing their shirts, they will start wearing rapper t-shirts as a returned favor in the future with the new generation and then they will forget about their White music forever someday since those drug addicts are weak minded. We control the media and we can control them." Its irritating they label the hell out of all us like we all do drugs and are all stupid, but you are attacking respectful Metal musicians instead in your video for them calling out posers.

@@bubbytumby8509 That is so true... In my old high school, one would get jumped for wearing a Metal T-shirt by thugs (certain kids that I can't describe in detail more due to youtube comment bans). They insult us, try to hit us, and their girlfriends would say they never date a rocker in life. They would try to treat us like we were a bunch of outcasts, especially if you were a goth kid. I remember a kid got his faced carved with a knife in the bathroom for wearing a Metal t-shirt.

Im 26 now so saying that out loud is pretty cringe. I could care less who wants to wear whatever band shirt, but as a kid being outcasted or clowned for wearing a shirt or listening to a certain genre and now having it be considered trendy and cool by the same kids who rejected you feels like a slap in the face. I accept any counter culture I'm into like skating or hardcore to be accepted into mainstream society now a days but id be lying if i said it didn't piss me off to see some normie douche wearing a thrasher shirt or band shirt when i was a teenager- early 20s.

@@FinnMckentyPRMBA Not exactly where I was going with my example, but I think it's fair to say Amber earned her scorn. I could have subbed Ezra Miller for Amber to make my point, just that Amber has had a lot of press lately and it was hard to avoid hearing about that whole ordeal, so she came to mind first. This phenomenon is not limited to metal. I usually wear MLB ball caps. I collect hats form the stadiums I visited, and when I wear one of my hats, I try to color coordinate a bit with the other clothing I have on. When I explain to people that ask about the hat or mention the team, they find it funny when I tell them I'm not a fan of that team. They act like I shouldn't be wearing that hat.

So I watched a pretty interesting video where they asked actual people in metal bands how they feel about non-metal heads wearing a metal band t-shirt and a lot of them said that they didn’t care. One of the band members highlighted that is really shows off how good of a job the graphic designer did on the T-shirt. Personally I’m not gonna be like “ugh you shouldn’t wear this because you don’t listen to the band.” But back when I used to work at hot topic and I would see people buy the shirt just for the aesthetic then I would at least recommend a few of the hits so that way they can at least say they heard of a song or 2. Also Chris Motionless from motionless in white also brought up a good point where it’s like I remembered being bullied in middle school for wearing a band tee and now it’s cool and fashion? I think theres more to it 1. You can no longer identify someone with similar music interests unless they have other clear indications, when shirts were the easiest way, now it doesnt mean anything, and it muddied the water. 2. We got mocked for the shirts for listening to "devil music" and "scream" music that takes no talent, theyre crazy, etc. But then the very next year when a rapper wore it, now its cool and it doesnt matter if its devil music or not. And arguably, most of the bands that got called this werent even slightly satanic. Most were post hardcore and metalcore, so they were wrong too. 3. When people who wear these clothes dont listen to the music, stores that sell clothes start selling merch that lines up with the posers as well, like hot topic which has TONS of hip hop and rap shirts which fine, its called Hot Topic, not the metal store but even then, it was a metal store before this happened regardless of the name. They change how accessible and inaccessible these things are and to me, thats really annoying when theres more stuff for hip hop than band t's in a store like that. If i hadnt been mocked and was left alone, i wouldnt care that the energy flipped so heavily. Not only this, people start calling themselves rockstars because theyre alternative in aesthetic, but still do their same music. Look how you want, its trivial at its core, but it IS annoying for those reasons.
@Nightwishmaster
@Nightwishmaster Жыл бұрын
@@gengashaunt3322 You can absolutely identify someone with similar music interests based on wearing a metal shirt, all you have to do is speak to them. All it takes is 10 seconds to say "Hey sweet _______ shirt, you listen to them?" If you're not actually going to talk to them or have any meaningful interaction does it really matter if they have the same musical interests or not? People should be happy that people have become more open minded about metal in recent years, isn't that what we should want? This was in high school, and i was made fun of, so logically speaking, as an introvert anyway, im not going to approach someone if im not pretty sure itll turn out fine. But i didnt have to. Because at the time, my friends wore these shirts and thats how we became friends. It was easier when this wasnt happening. Secondly, im sure youre aware posers will lie and say they listen to these bands when they dont. If they dont ill be disappointed, but lying and being like oh i only know thiiiiis stuff and its like oh me too, which ones. Weeeeeell i dont know the names of the songs. To even be having this convo because i wondered if they even listened to the music creates a situation where im now seeming like a gatekeeper when i dont care what you do in reality, you created this situation by wearing it because i DO listen to it and i wanted to make a friend. Its hard to be friends with a poser when i can see it blatantly. It sounds judgemental but id rather pick my company wisely so i dont make them upset with me because i dont line up with the way they do things, i can leave them to live how they wish and not deal with it at all. Id rather not be in that position and this wouldnt happen were it not for stuff like my example with the shirts. Now im not in high school, and i hardly see any band ts ever at all so this isnt applicable anymore.

@@Nightwishmaster and wearing a shirt while having the same level of knowledge about it as you did before, which is none, isnt being open minded about metal. They dont give a shit about the music, they cared about fitting with the trend at the time, thats why you dont see it anymore at least where i am. Theyre just as ignorant to the music as they were, wearing a shirt doesnt change that. So no, this isnt what we should want, but i say that solely as a fan of metal. However what we do want is people to like what they like and do as they please like id like to be allowed to do, and it includes letting people do this anyway. Its not a big deal, its just minor grievance.

I think gatekeeping metal is ok when you're young - yeah, ok, you're still figuring stuff out and haven't learned acceptance yet. The sad part is these 30+ year olds getting genuinely angry about someone wearing a shirt or having an opinion.

FM, I think you’re spot on with your explanation of how “metal heads” feel about their identity. I’m a very big fan of extreme metal and there is something quite appealing in believing that it’s something that is consumed by a very small group of individuals. But I don’t care if celebrities wear extreme metal band t-shirts. For example, I wouldn’t care if I saw Channing Tatum wearing a 1349 t-shirt. It means that the band will get exposure in a way that it usually wouldn’t. It really doesn’t matter because I know, in the end, that the very nature of extreme metal makes it a less appealing genre. It will likely never be as popular a genre as say, Pop, and that’s perfectly alright.

this is really interesting timing for this video. a rapper i like, ken car$on, recently started rocking a lot of slam/bsdm t-shirts. not even like surface level stuff, bands like cerebral incubation, visceral disgorge, fetal deformity, and gorepot. not only did it shock me, because how the heck did ken carson or one of his stylists even find this stuff, but it made me excited. when i got on his subreddit, people ask “what shirt is he wearing that design looks sick” and i can actually decode the logo and tell them what it is. i’m sure somebody at this point who likes playboi carti or ken carson has inevitably grown to enjoy devourment or something due to the culture crossover, and it makes me happy because i love both. :)

I completely agree in establishing confidence in your own identity and not worrying too much about the new fans. I do have one thought that I can't shake and that it somehow cheapens the product. I can't put a finger on it since some bands maintain the same energy in their shows since the beginning even with rebranding, but there have been new trends where the crowd change takes away from the original experience, such as moshing used to be a regular thing and then having to go to more heavier niche bands to get the same atmosphere.

You spoke my mind right there. The sense of identity of a metalhead is very fragile and they (I include myself to some extent) feel great discomfort when a non-metalhead stick their nose into their world. But for real, most of the time this happens, it's always the huge mainstream metal bands that are the subjects of the trend, and I couldn't care less. Rare do I see a non-metalhead wear an underground band shirt, because they'd have to find it in a thrift/vintage store, and metalheads don't give away their underground shirts. No way! 🤣 Kanye wearing Cradle might just be the most ''extreme'' example.

Kanye is into enough “weird” music that I’d almost consider him an alternative artist who was just good enough (and lucky enough) to blow up. He’s also always talking about, praising various rock bands. I think the super popular bands have enough pull that some of these people unironically like them. Misfits and Ramones were basically Elvis with a few edgy lyrics and a fuzzy guitar tone, Maiden is pretty much Zeppelin+. Nirvana was basically a hardcore band trying to do metal/old school hard rock/country rock. But their influence lead to Bush, Seether, then The Fray, Avril Lavigne, MB20, and I’d say we were still seeing some leftovers of the Nirwannabe craze even on Speak Now and Breakaway 🤪. Metallica is, well, Metallica. They’re all pretty listener friendly and I wouldn’t be shocked if Kim Kardashian or Justin Bieber or anyone else liked any one of them.

Here's my take, if no one has made this comment already: I have seen so many people completely shit on this wonderful genre. When I find out people like Metal, even when I don't "expect" it out of them, I get pretty excited. I love being able to recommend bands to people and hear about their favorites. However, because this genre is pretty much reviled by most people, it's kinda aggravating to see people that you know don't like the music wearing merch. You shit on us and our music, but wear the merch? I get the argument about free publicity and not allowing this to bother us, but where's the integrity behind it all? I can't stand Blueface, but if he released the dopest looking shirt ever, I still wouldn't wear it. Either stop looking at us like we're weirdos for liking "noise" or piss off with the shirts. If any of these celebrities even like a single song, good for them, at least they're more open-minded than others who wear the merch. If they're not, then... yeah, I won't say anything more.

Alot of people got bullied for listening to certain bands or dressing a certain way at a young age, which leads to a very "us vs them" mentality. Unfortunately, many bands often feed into this with music videos, like the one for waking the demon by BFMV. This causes a lot of people in the world of heavy music to be very uptight and shitty around people they perceive to be "on the other side". So when they see a celebrity that they perceive to be "preppy" wearing a metal or punk shirt, most of em won't see a regular person wearing a shirt they also like. All they can see is the douche that made fun of them for wearing a pierce the veil shirt when they were 11. It's not an excuse for people to be shitty though. Gatekeeping is annoying and usually sucks, but I wish people would take more time to understand why people in the world of heavy music act this way. I believe most of it comes down to the genre and it's listeners being treated with less respect by society, the entertainment industry, and the general media.
