If this isn't grounds for a lawsuit, I don't know what would be. Both to recover extortion fee to retrieve car and to shut the rip off artist down cold. Perhaps plaintiff could present this video as evidence, or better still, an affidavit from Kiwi. Understand why Chris didn't identify the prick, but these scum bags need to be outed!

I would be hard-pressed to believe that any Mechanic would put their name down on an affidavit testifying to bad workmanship of another shop. I had some bad work done at a dealership and my local mechanic fixed it and told me how awful and showed me how bad and wrong the work was causing my issue. I did end up making a small claims case against the dealer. They settled out of court. But my life long mechanic said he refused to put anything down on paper and refused any effort to assist me other then telling me what he say and fixed. From Kiwi's own words "I have to be pretty careful naming names" In other words good luck your on your own !!!!

Being formally trained in law (LLB) but retired - and I mean no offence in saying the following - but people make 'naïve' comments such as -"...sue them - lawsuit - get 'MILLIONS' from them...' etc etc - HA - yes - possibly there may be grounds to commence a legal action about a 'crooked' mechanic - BUT - and remember this - it costs MONEY to engage professional legal representation to pursue the other party through the courts. And if the claimant does not have the money to do so - then there is NO defendant - as in i twill not get before the court. Yes - you can act as 'self represented' in court - HA - but good luck - you better read up on the relevant legal matters involved. HA - and then I also have a laugh - when on the other hand - people are always claiming lawyers are crooks (HA - yes - there are some that are crooks - HA - just like some politicians are crooks - and some STUPID lawyers as well [and there is a BIG difference between STUPID and DUMB - HA] - HA - and the STUPID ones that think they look pretty but are FUGLY - HA) - HA - but when the public have been wronged - it goes like this '"OH - PLEASE MR//MS lawyer - please represent me and get my money back from the crooks - OR - stop me from going to prison." - HA. It is often the client that is the CROOK - and especially in a criminal trial - if a lawyer claims the client as innocent, and the lawyer KNOWS that the client actually DID commit the crime and is GUILTY - the lawyer can be held before the courts or the law institute and be charged - or also lose their ticket to practice law = FORGET the SH-T law you see on DUMB F-CK TV - HA. And also as is common in our COMMON LAW jurisdictions - 'MIGHT CAN MEAN RIGHT' = the party with the deepest pockets can drive the 'poor' party into the ground. A little known component in many common law jurisdiction is the COURT of EQUITY - equitable rights are different than legal rights (often) - HA - and AMAZING how many lawyers roll their eyes when the word "EQUITY" is mentioned - they have NO idea how to pursue such claims in the courts - HA - HABBA would not - HA. I have seen parties walk away from pursuing their rights when their lawyer has NO idea of how to mount an effective claim in EQUITY. Forgive typos and syntax errors - too busy to proofread. CHEERS from AUSTRALIA.

My youngest son worked as a tech at a local shop before he joined the Navy. The shop was one of the more reputable in the area, and they would see hack jobs like this more often that I would have thought. When I was a kid I found shops were more competent...this was 30 years ago...but more willing to deceive, in my area. So I learned to do most anything myself. Now I have found that shops in my area- I needed a clutch on a '66 Chevy and in my angle driveway I wasn't digging it- actually would _refuse_ to do the work, it's a mechanical clutch. WTF. One guy, who runs a shop in my town that has all sorts of 60s cars in the lot, acted like I kicked his dog when I asked if he'd do it. Finally found a guy- a drag racer, he still campaigns a '69 Camaro- who runs a shop nearby and who just likes old cars. He'd do it.

@@bbb462cidI'll bet you are right. I am a 25 year old mechanic (with machinist training/experience, and appliance repair) and I have invested around 20k in tools and my home shop. Gotten what i feel is an extremely rounded shop for that money. So far I do everything mechanical, most all electrical, engine work, swaps, brakes, etc. I dont currently offer alignments tires or paint/body work, or AC work, for various reasons both tooling and experience related. But I have plans to work on all of those skills. My wife bought me a lift for Christmas and that has made more of a difference than anything else I can imagine for being able taking on bigger jobs as a one man crew. Its very important for me to know what i can, cant, and am willing to work on. Honesty is the only policy for any shop that hopes to survive. Maybe i will get my first customer of the year sometime soon. Lol, oh well. All good things in time, right?

When I was in the business many years ago we had a customer bring in a car that was running poorly. We traced the problem back to the carburetor. The float bowls were full of a black slimy substance and it was plugging everything. We rebuilt the carb and reinstalled it and the customer went away happy. Six months later he was back with the same problem The second time around I traced the fuel line back under the car and found a half assed repair that had been done by someone where they had removed part of the steel fuel line and replaced it with some kind of vacuum hose which wasn't fuel resistant. The fuel was eating out the inside of the hose and making the black gunk that was plugging the carb. We called the customer and he told us his brother in law had done the work and somehow had managed to destroy about 3 feet of the original steel line so he replaced it with the hose and a couple of clamps. When the car was ready and the customer came in to pick it up he had his brother in law with him. When we gave him the bill he passed it to his brother in law and told him to get his Visa card out because he was paying this time...........

I am currently going through this with my 74 maverick grabber one of 186 made that year with my options. It was an AZ car I had trailered here to Ohio with about 100k on it. The motor failed because of a bad oil pump and I purchased a new rebuilt 302 for it. The head gaskets were on backwards which was no problem, caused a little overheating issue and I asked a local shop to fix it (the motor was installed and when the head gasket issue was found the engine shop stated it had been opened up, no more warranty). Over the next 3 years every time I went and asked about my car something else was wrong with it and the motor was still disassembled. I continually put pressure on them to get it back together and get it home. This guy is supposed to be the guru of all classic cars, and has a barn he keeps them in while waiting for repairs. When he finally told me to come get the car, the heads had been resurfaced, the carb and intake changed to a brand new Edlebrock 4bbl, new stainless fan shroud, new aluminum water pump, all new brake lines.... He didn't charge me a penny for any of it. The car had been stored outside and water leaked in, the interior is ruined, the trunk drop offs had filled with water and rusted out the quarters, the lower doors were rusted from the inside out, and one of his workers stole the sport grabber gas cap and replaced it with a 4 door cap. It had sat out back the whole time in the elements. I asked what happened to my car and he said "Hey you could have picked it up at any time". I told him you always said it was in pieces, that's not how I wanted it back. He ended the conversation with "you need spark plugs for it to run a little less rough". The car didn't run at all. I got 500 feet up the road and had to have it towed home. I had another mechanic look at it and said it wasn't going to run deliberately. sabotaged the motor after I made a big fuss about the body being ruined, well let me state I assume that at this point, but another licensed shop said that's what they thought. The fact they didn't charge me for the avenger II carb, intake, any work what so ever, I knew they knew they left it to rot. I have an attorney in my case, I just don't know how far it will go.

No way that shop should have let that engine out the door, but I also fault the owner of the car. There needs to be accountability and responsibility for knowing the cost to maintain and repair these older cars. This situation screams to me a lack of budget and instead of rightly turning the job down, they rolled the dice using whatever to get it done. I build my own engines and have had friends request I build them an engine. I quit builds several times because the funds that were suppose to be available dried up. I got the questions "well can't we just reuse this?" or " I found this knockoff on ebay and it's way cheaper, so can't we just use this instead?". The answer from someone with morals, self-respect, and standards is NO! I know it's not what people want to hear, but you can't successfully own these older cars and expect to drive them if you're broke. Have the funds to do it the right way, learn to do the work yourself to eliminate labor costs, or stick to modern cheap beaters until you reach a place in your life that proper care of the car can be afforded.

Yeah... I just prefer to do projects alone because of this. I've worked with people on stuff where they didn't have the bolts for their valve covers so they sourced some from what they had laying around. They didn't match and some were too long so they stacked a half dozen washers under the bolt head to take up the extra space. Or they have to run a wire and don't have what they need so they string 4 short sections together that are different gauges and colors with electrical tape. Can't be bothered to go to the store and get proper wire but they dropped a couple hundred bucks on nice valve covers. Then when they help me out on my project they don't understand why I stop the project when I don't have something I need and they ask "don't you want to get this thing finished?" If they'd like help doing brakes on the wife's Camry, I'm there. When it comes to a project car, no thanks.

It should be illegal for the shop that worked on the stang to work on cars. Using air line for fuel line, and modifying the T-stat housing, and the exhaust work. The work reminds me of one of those junk yard competitions where you have to wander around a junk yard finding whatever they can find to make your project work. Someone needs to name names as a protection for potential future victims.
