Kylian Mbappe was one of the most sought after teenage footballers of all time. His time at Clairefontaine geared him up to walk straight into a Ligue 1 first team. But even before he joined Clairefontaine he had the opportunity to sign for Chelsea.

There is a good chance that we would have never seen him shine as bright if he had. Clairefontaine has a far better track record of making young potential into top professionals. Chelsea would have probably sold him at 16 to a Turkish club to balance the books..

We never had a choice with Modric. Daniel Levy wasn't willing to sell to Chelsea under any circumstances and sold him to Madrid the next summer for a lesser offer.

They had the agreed a contract with Mbappe, but Liverpool’s owners thought 50 million was too much for a teenager who was already played Champions League and scored many goals in Ligue 1. Other than Lampard, Chelsea NEVER gave young players a chance. Mount, James, Chalobah, CHO, RLC all would have cost £250m if those positions had to be filled by other players. Remember, Tuchel even tried to replace Reece James with Hakimi. 🤦‍♂️

To be fair to Mourinho his mandate is to win the league in his 1st or 2nd season, and he knows he'll likely be sacked by the 4th. If young players (Varane, Oscar) can make an impact in the team he uses them, if they need extended runs of games in favour of other players who are better than them at that time (salah, de bruyne) then he won't, simple

I'm glad he took a different path. Jeremie Boga who you slightly mentioned in the video completely blew me away when I watched in preseason 2016 for Chelsea but was loaned out two seasons in a row before being sold off to Sassuolo in Italy, he nevertheless has pressed on with his career, really proud of him, despite his subsequent big money Atalanta move not yielding the desired effect for both parties. Started really well at Nice this season, may end up at PSG in a season or two.

I am a Chelsea fan, but I have to admit we are terrible at developing young players. We buy rising stars like Hazard and make them great, but developing is always a challenge. Look at Sturridge, Lukkaku, Salah, and KDB.

I wonder if Mbappe not going to Chelsea was the better move. I mean, even breaking through at Chelsea at that time would've been hard. Chelsea had Hazard by the time Mbappe would've been old enough to break into the first team, then they brought in Morata. Not to mention how many managers had been at Chelsea from 2010/11 to now. While we couldn't have foreseen Abramovich selling Chelsea at the time, he still had a carousel of managers, from Ancelotti, Mourinho, Conte, Lampard, Sarri, Tuchel, Villa-Boas, di Matteo, and others. A lot of philosophical changes and approaches to the game could not be good for anyone that young.

Chelsea rarely gave youth players a chance back in the day. Chelsea usually went out and tried to buy whoever was the current hot commodity on the market. He would've probably been loaned out a bunch and eventually sold without ever being given a real chance to make it to the Chelsea first team.

It was Anthony Martial being signed by Louis Van Gaal that gave Mbappe his chance in the first team at Monaco. In Europe it was the amount in Euros that was reported for Martial's signing, 70+ million, whereas in England it was only £40-45 million, which doesn't seem as bad. I wonder what would have happened had Martial stayed or if LVG had the foresight to sign Mbappe instead.

Hindsight is a wonderful thing but he was only good in the beginning when he first signed - rather than being a long-term prospect as was intended. Now that Mbappe has scored a World Cup Final hat-trick and Martial can't even make the French squad, i'm sure most would agree Mbappe would have been the signing.
