I love chickens! I used to have chickens and sometimes I would have snacks for them. I opened the front door to my house and called, "GANG!" and they would magically appear, running like mad because they knew it was something good like cookies. Chickens are good, and they are funny.

Most of our chickens have accepted snow--all except one. A few years back my husband and son went to let out the chickens after the first snowfall. I was inside and suddenly heard a chicken having complete shrieking hysterics. It sounded like they were trying to dig eggs out of her with a spoon. Turned out she absolutely lost it when her feet hit the white stuff. She never got over it, either; if Phoenix was outside when it started snowing, you'd have to go rescue her and carry her to the coop. She just could not handle it.

Oh my goodness, the first time my chickens saw snow was so funny! One of my Leghorns, Snowflake, jumped on my arm and WOULD NOT GET OFF. I finally pushed her off and she fell into the snow, and would not move. She was so scared. I picked her up and she was so relived. I put her back into the coop, and they all were too scared to free range that day. XD

These are probably their thoughts/words: Chicken A: "Time for another day of..." Chicken B: "Finish your catchphrase, Chicken A!" Chicken A: "What's with the ground?" Chicken B: "Is this the same place?" Chicken C: "HURRY UP, I WANT TO GET OUT, TOO!" Chicken B: "AAGH! Don't push me!" Chicken C: "Whoa. Can we even walk on it?" Chicken A: "I'm not going to touch it." Chicken C: "Why is it all white?" Chicken A and B: "Did the protecting invaders (humans) do this?" Chicken C: "Maybe it came from the sky." Chicken A, B, and C: "Okay, who's going to walk on it?" Chicken C: "OH CRAP!" Chicken A, B, and C: "Hello, Chicken D..." Chicken D: "What happened? Is that grass?" Chicken C: "Maybe... we don't know if it's safe." (Chickens think for a bit, until 1:59, where Chicken E joins in) Chicken E: "Coming through! Okay, what happened? Is that what invader (human) feces look like?" Chicken D: "HEN DOWN, HEN DOWN, REQUESTING BACKUP IMMEDIATELY!" Chicken A, B, C, and E: "You survived! Is it safe?" Chicken D: "HOLY CLUCKING CHICK, THAT WAS COLD!" Chicken B: "I FELL!" "This isn't that bad. Maybe my feces will do something." Chicken A: "Try it again, Chicken D!" Chicken D: "AAGH!" Chicken B: "I'm going inside. Chicken E has." Chicken C: "Yeah, me too." Chicken A: "Same here." Chicken D: "It's interesting.... meh...." (3:56) Chicken D: "Yum!" Chicken A: "It's pretty good." My girls saw their first snow last year. I laughed so hard at their reactions! I usually opened the door to their coop and they would literally FLY out and into the grass, but when the snow hit I opened the door and they all started to rush, but stopped. one didn't see the snow and still went rushing like a bat out of hell, flew out, stopped herself midair and immediately plopped down to the snow. She left wing and feet impressions in the shallow snow on contact with the ground and bolted her little butt back inside their coop. I wish I still had the picture of her snow angel!

🤣 Ours did the same😂. I noticed one in a corner under the coop up against the fencing and thought nothing of it. Couple hours later, she was still in the same corner up off the snow, so I went out to check on her. She wouldn’t move to go back under and up the ramp. She just huddled there and kept picking up one foot after another and curling her claws. Had to pick her up and put her on the ramp. They never came out again until we put down straw...😆😆😆.

Also: so glad i am not the only one who shovels space for their birds in the snow. :p

My hens don't drink in the winter. They EAT the snow to survive! Even when I provide water. They still love the snow more! Saves me a lot of work though!

Chicken ; what kind of soil is this

Imagine yourself going outside on the snow with bare feet, only because of food.

Chickens are very thoughtful birds - one belonging to my mother inveigled her to follow her down the road - turn right - turn left - and meet her old donkey and horse friends put out to grass. Her daily whereabouts had been missed for a week or so.

Our girls experienced their first snow this morning.......4 hours after sunrise......and they still won't leave the coop. They are hilarious. Chickens are the best pets.

If I had chickens i wd put them in an enclosed pen with a roof to prevent a snow floor and prevent predators from getting them plus I wd put a 100 watt bulb in the coop to keep them comfy.
