Procedures are becoming more affordable and the target audience is getting younger. What are the risks you need to know?
Plastic and Cosmetic surgery was once kept secret by only the rich and famous who could afford it, but now with advances in medical technology making the odd nip and tuck more accessible to the masses, people are going under the knife in the pursuit of their dream look.
As with all medical procedures, there are risks. In this documentary, narrated by Jill Halfpenny, we hear first hand accounts of people who went under the knife and received unexpected results.

The fact you need a licence to perform normal tattoos but not to perform eyebrow tattoos is mind boggling

Even the tattooing licencing is questionable. In the uk they just look for running water and that's it. The one I worked in had mould growing in the sterilisers and the ironic part? Environmental Health would use them to train new staff!

I'm a licensed cosmetologist in the States and had to go through a five day training course to do permanent makeup in 2016. You have to retouch your permanent makeup every two years as well. It's expensive if the technician is experienced. Every country has different codes and regulations. In California your working under your Cosmetology license. It's another skill you can utilize. But always do your own homework. Outweigh risks vs benefits.

Here in Belgium every tattoo artist needs a certificate that they have undergone an official hygiene test in which they show they know the correct hygiene rules of tattooing. There is also regular check ups with tattoo shops to see if rules are being followed. My own tattoo artist has a drawer full of documents and on every paper the customer signs and gives consent to be tattooed, but he also writes down all the ink names and a description of the tattoo, this is apparently mandatory in the case of an allergic reaction or issue with the tattoo that is related to the ink. Bearing this information in mind, it is so hard to believe that my tattoo artist follows more rules than those ghost doctors at shady plastic surgery establishments.

Happy to see your comment, that's what I was thinking, too. Because I'm too afraid to have cosmetic procedures, I couldn't do it unless it was absolutely necessary. When I went with my daughter for a mani - pedi, I think that the woman who did my pedicure had a grudge against Caucasian people. She was so rough, I had four ingrown toenails from it. I kept telling her she was hurting me, she only smiled at me & I KNOW she understood English. I tried to get out of the chair without making a scene, she wouldn't let me, squeezing my ankle so hard, she bruised it. My daughter & I live very far from each other, only visit once per year. I wanted to have quality time with her. That's why I didn't make a scene in the salon.

If they refused to take time off, because of money, what time would they enjoy, that wealth? I, as a woman in my mid 70s, find it very sad that people are so unhappy with their bodies, or feel they need to keep up with latest trend. I always had a big bum when it was not the in thing. My reply to anyone who remarked on it was, "Well, it’s all behind me!" I was never at the front of the queue for beauty but I am happy with myself and accept who I am.

@@Denise-yj3se I find this sad but do understand it. My sister had a large nose with a big bump in it. She wouldn’t have surgery because she was worried about what people would say. Eventually she did have rhinoplasty. She worked as a dental nurse, when people saw her with bruising and swelling she just said she’d broken her nose. People who she hadn’t seen in a while remarked something was different and thought it was her new hairstyle. A girl who worked with me had half her face covered in a port wine birth mark. I thought she would have a chip on her shoulder but she didn’t at all. She did get extensive laser treatment which removed a lot but, some places it was to deep. She had a brilliant outlook about it all. Occasionally she would be asked about it - usually by children and she answered them honestly. The only time I saw her upset over it was when a random woman said she would pray for her as it was 'the mark of the devil,' Needless to say, I told the woman that she was an ignorant baitch.

@@Foxhunter49I have a big port wine on my right shoulder. And the skin almost looks see through. Changing for gym or going swimming was terrible because people always thought it was an open wound and I constantly had to explain myself. I was aware that some children had it on their faces and I know how lucky I am. I have a tattoo on the other shoulder and an artist once asked if I didn't want him to give me something to cover it. I said, no, that's part of who I am. I also wore Forest Gump polio braces and special shoes for years because of an extreme pigeon toe. I got bullied for that, even by some teachers. By high school, I was a 3 sport athlete, so the bullies could f off. I am glad I was of the first generation after the feminist movement and my parents rarely talked about how me and my sister looked. We were pushed for academia. When I was in my 30s, I considered a breast reduction and lift, just because I was tired on hauling DDD around. But my then sister in law showed me hers before she got her stitches out and I said, nah. ❤ To everyone and our regular bodies.

That poor woman with the breast reduction. I feel so terrible for her. I had a breast reduction in 2010 and mine went well. I was and still am very happy with my results 14 years later. I consulted with 3 surgeons before I made my choice. Interestingly the 2 male surgeons i saw wanted to reduce them and then tried to sell me on needing implants for shape. The female surgeon I saw gave me an odd look when I asked about implants for shape and told me that it would not be necessary. She was so adamant that i would not want them that she said if I wasn't happy with my breasts at 18 months post surgery and felt I needed implants, then she would do them at a huge discount. She was right. I didnt want or need them. I went from a very pendulous 12GG to a perky 12D. Im 5'10" tall. The scars had turned virtually invisible by 1 year later. Post operative pain was minimal. Paracetamol was all i required for the discomfort. I had been very self conscious of both the size and shape of my boobs since my teens. I was 37 when I had them reduced and lifted. My only regret? That I didn't do it sooner. It made a huge difference to my confidence.

I've had terrible eyesight since childhood requiring corrective lens to leave my house even. I've been asked a hundred times why I don't get Lasik and to them I say, "You do know that there's a small percentage of patients who's procedure doesn't go well? I don't want to be in that group." I work in the medical field and not every surgery is a success. I think that because the outcome is USUALLY positive, people forget that it's still risky and do your research before you go under the knife for ANYTHING.

She said she was probably in a minority of people that had all the bad effects. But I know what my luck is like. So, I am still wearing glasses. She said it was *probably* going to be worth it. I think she wanted to be more attractive partly for dating and she was a minor politician. But she was 50 years old when I talked with her.

Truth. Many years ago as a cardiac nurse I took care of a lovely 72 year old woman. She had a heart cath. Turns out she had no blockages. On the consent form it says "possibility the cath can puncture the heart." Yes, it can, and she had to have open heart surgery to repair it. Because somebody has to be in the 10% that can go wrong. I see fine with my glasses. And since my risk is blindness I don't want to be in the 10% where something serious happens.

It is not worth the risk, especially going abroad and not receiving proper information and post-op care. I was left to inject myself with the anticoagulant injections for 4 days after coming home from the clinic. I have no strength and require B12 injections for the rest of my life. It has made me so severely unwell and insecure of my own body. I searched online, read the positive reviews but still went to meet her in person. She was an RN, had a very sterile and clean process and they were beautiful for 2 yrs as promised. I've never got them redone as she quit doing these and after hearing stories like these, i just paint them on each morning. So sorry to those of you that especially had necessary procedures, even if experiencing lack of body confidence. Prayers for the victims and for asking those seeking vanity only surgeries to pray for themselves 😂 🙏 My beautiful 39 year old daughter struggled with back pain, ill fitting clothes and was so self conscious of how large they were as compared with her tiny body. She had a beautiful breast reduction and was so happy with everything. Sadly, she passed away unexpectedly from non related issues. I have that special memory of her happiness in those last months. In 1983, at age 26, I had my large bowel removed, not a cosmetic procedure but the surgeon was clearly out of his depth. I needed 12 surgeries that year to repair fistulas and other problems. 5 of those surgeries involved me flying to Melbourne from Tasmania, leaving my 3 children under 4 years old with grandparents and friends. 41 years later I am still suffering from that first surgery. Ten years ago I lost all but 4 foot of my small bowel. I haven’t been able to eat for the last 8 years - I live on hospital formula and Hydralyte. I’m needing IV fluids twice a week. I stopped counting surgeries a few years ago when I got to 230 anaesthetics. In those days we didn’t have specialist surgeons. I’m in palliative care and have only has one year in that time without at least two surgeries. However, I did get to see my children grow up, fortunately. I’ve had an ileostomy bag for 41 years now so I understand how plastic surgery can maim someone.

Nothing was wrong with them but when I was in high school my mother (who has a very thin line for brows and should not have any say in anyone else’s brows after what she’s done to her own) took me to get them waxed. The waxing lady waxed all of my brows off except for a very thin line. I literally cried for days and that was the very first time and the very last time I’ve ever let anyone touch my eyebrows.

I understand the thin brows. When I was going through chemo, I lost all my hair. There was a Salon which had been in business for at least 30 years, and she lost her Momma to breast cancer, and in honor of her Mother, she was giving free brows for survivors. My aunt had read it in the paper and suggested that I go. I did, and technician had years of experience, and showed me a blond color, but I have brunette hair, and I asked if she could go a little bit darker, and more to my natural hair color? She said... I know Exactly what you want, and I walked out of there with Black brows! Black!! But also Thin as heck! I have cried for years about them! Not wanting to leave the house. I continue to be depressed over them, and now they are dark, bleeding grey. Horrible.

I told the Drs I was getting weaker and weaker after the surgery but wouldn’t listen to me staying I was just after attention. 25 yrs later and I’m unable to work (I’m an ICU nurse) and I’m only 52and fear my future is bleak. I have developed multi organ enlargement which as started affecting my heart and lungs as well. The thing is in retrospect I didn’t really need my gallbladder removed as I’d only had one mild attack. Drs will tell you anything to make some money and operate.

I worked in a private gastro clinic doing transcription for over 3 years. The poor buggers that had so much trouble after getting their gallbladder out were beyond scary. I have had two gallstone attacks, and the surgeons keep telling me I need it out. I kept refusing. I just had pancreatitis and ended up in hospital they booked me in for surgery, and I refused. I know the risks of pancreatitis, but there is no way in hell I'm having my gallbladder out unless it's life or death. It's playing Russian roulette. You don't realise how much you need your gallbladder until it's gone and how the next op is the bile duct. The surgeon told me I was being hysterical, and thousands of people have their gallbladder out with no complications. I said "yeah but you aren't the one whose life will be destroyed if I'm the small percentage of people where it all goes wrong." Pancreatitis has cleared up. I say let sleeping dogs lie. Sorry this happened to you.
