I was in the audience seeing this taped at CBS in 1976, a few months after moving to Los Angeles. Alice Ghostley was in the audience, and she stood up when Carol introduced her. It was only in the last few years that I was able to view it as it was shown on TV. It's more meaningful to me today than when I watched the live performance.

Laughter follows Carol Burnett wherever she goes, but the comedy legend is opening up about a particular scene she once filmed that took a serious turn. The 87-year-old star revealed a sketch she rehearsed in 1974 for her iconic television series, "The Carol Burnett Show," that left her devastated. While speaking to The Wrap, Burnett recalled filming a scene for the show featuring guest star Maggie Smith, along with herself as character Eunice, Harvey Korman as her husband Ed, and Vicki Lawrence playing her role as Mama. The scene involved the Eunice and Ed paying a visit to their son Bubba's Sunday School teacher, played by Smith, to discuss how he was acting like a bully to his peers. During the scene, it's revealed that Bubba was acting out due to his upbringing at home, according to the outlet. Burnett said the actors performed the skit without their usual Southern accents and overstated style, following a suggestion from someone on set. “Before we were going to take, one of us said, ‘You know, just for fun, let’s do a run-through of this without doing the accents and without going over-the-top, let’s do it. Like it would be for real people, you know?’ And we did. And it was, it was devastating.”

This sketch is heartbreaking. Dysfunctional families are very real. I’m grateful I live in a time where we recognise it, and can now work towards more healthy parenting, re-parenting, and lives. The amount of work it takes to re-parent. Sending love to everyone who watched this and felt the reality of this growing up. (Only one parent ever went to my parents evenings, and it always became about them). Lots of love from one “ungrateful child” x

I was a child in the 70's and was not exposed to horrible adult behavior such as demonstrated in the skit. In fact, I stopped watching Carol Burnett and the sequential spin-off of these characters because it was not funny. At this age, and now that I lived through the period of The Rosanne Show and Malcom in the Middle, not to mention countless others, I am offended and blame this type of humor that was fed on mainstream media in partial responsibility for the degradation of polite society and the appreciation of kindness. You can see my full response to the video on the main thread.

I don't think teachers can be this candid in today's political climate. As a domestic abuse survivor, I appreciate the realism and the pathos of the sketch. People not touched by abuse may find this funny, and lucky they are, but this piece touches a nerve about the real lives of many of our students.
@VangoghsDoggo
@VangoghsDoggo 8 ай бұрын
School and teachers were always the out for abused kids. The one place they could feel safe and secure was school. I saw many kids who were in dire straights at home, excel in school. They always had one teacher who seemed to motivate them. I had several who did and consider myself lucky. If teachers were allowed to teach and not have continuous interference from parents and administration, they could make a lot of kids succeed instead of giving up due to their circumstances at home. In a lot of ways, we have tied their hands. The only option is to kick kids out now, to quickly. Or, they drop out. Bubba is a popular name to call prison inmates. This sketch shows why.

I appreciate Maggie Smith in a whole new light. How elegant she was in her younger years as well as her senior years. I'm starting to look up to her as a role model.

If you read this as a transcript you would find zero jokes. In the hands of these actors it becomes satire. Funny? Of it’s time. And quite crucial to watch in 2023. Maggie is ON POINT playing it very nearly straight, dropping in her pauses with a surgeon’s precision. Carol, Vicky and Harvey are top notch comic performers who understood the difference between making light and shedding light. The audience reaction is probably sweetened a touch but this is timeless, character-driven comedy which feels distinctly uncomfortable and necessarily so. The nature of comedy is to sometimes agitate to laughter and hold up a mirror to the audience. THAT’S WHAT MAKES IT FUNNY. And I do love me some Tim Conway as the (played for laughs but unthinkable now) near-deaf relative or the Nazi interrogator with a puppet fetish, but look at the dialogue a sketch like this inspires. Plus…touches like the set/costume colours and choices are so in keeping with the tone of the scene.

Wonderful to see these two legends working together! Maggie Smith at this age reminds me of when she was in the movie The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie❤

In this sketch, here Maggie sounds as Julie Andrews did in sound of music when she was talking to the captain about each of his children, which angered him. Anyway, they sound alike. Lovely.

Maybe because teachers have to deal with people who take sketch comedy so seriously, like it was real life... they can't handle such level of abstraction, so they quit.

I love reading all of these remarks from the younger folks who are just discovering Carol Burnett and crew. My family in the states grew up on the CBS show on CBS every Saturday night, with Carol acting her mime at the end, dressed up as a humble cleaning woman sweeping up the overhead light into a small circle until there was darkness. I believe that she borrowed that skit to the late but loving Red Skeleton who used to sweep up a spotlight dressed as a hobo if I recall 😊, but I am now a 64 yo bat, so don't quote me on any of this lol.

I don't remember the mimes. The most detailed memories I have of Carol Burnette was about 1972 onward when I was about 10. I'll have to dig back to see the mime stuff.

Our family watched the Carol Burnett Show weekly; it was some of the very best sketch comedy on television [1967-1978]. I'm thinking this particular show was probably shown around the time that Dame Maggie Smith had been awarded the Oscar for Best Actress in 1969 for her outstanding work in The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie.
