When did John Lennon start The Quarrymen? We know it was sometime in 1956, but when exactly? And who was responsible for starting the Quarrymen? Who was George Lee?
New evidence has come to light to suggest when the Quarrymen were started, but how accurate can we be? We know that Rock Island Line by Lonnie Donegan was the catalyst for starting the skiffle craze in 1956, but Michael Hill, a school friend of John Lennon, also suggests a time when John first picked up a guitar.
With the help of Rod Davis, banjo player with The Quarrymen and resident Quarrymen historian, we examine new evidence that suggests an earlier date than we first thought.

I’m glad my grandad got to tell his piece of the story and you got to interview him. I didn’t know about his nickname George until my dad said after you interviewed him.

Spot on Dave! Good ole' Bill Smith told me exactly the same 7yrs ago when I met him at Latham Hall for a night out before it was closed down. He said that he definately suggested The Quarrymen outside the classroom but John didn't think the name was "rock n'Roll enough" but it stuck anyway. Poor old Bill is struggling now since his stroke, but still alive and kicking!!!

Fab! Penny Lane. Biollettis barbers shop , their son, younger than quarrymen, went to quarry bank, he always got called B.O. unfortunate nickname. Lol
