I thought I was the only one who would put together a system in that same chaotic manner while testing components - I love it! Piling on the video cards on top of each other...I would call that being brave, although I am sure most would call it something else. Awesome build...I am still trying to navigate to where someone explains just what you're building and why, but being a bit of geek, I can still appreciate it and say "who cares" why....it's a beast and who wouldn't want that tank in their "playroom"?? :-)

The thing though is a good 80% of that stuff is server stuff which is supposed to be bulletproof. Yes the graphics cards were consumer grade, but I'm fairly sure he wanted to test it with a cheap solution (lol cheap for ltt) before dropping who knows how much on the graphics cards he will actually use. Considering he's posted pics of at least 4 quadro gv100s and 6 titan v graphics cards on his instagram, he's going to go absolutely nuts with this system.

In theory, you can use some badass server hardware to build computing cluster. Then use the same virtualization software to install OS. Then just connect to it by LAN from some 30$ raspberry pi pc. That's how gaming stream services (like Liquid Sky) work. For local network latency should not be a big problem.

Hi Linus. While I enjoy most of your videos, as a cloud computing trainer, I have to ask: Why go through all the trouble of having 6 GPUs and PCI passtrough and whatnot for this build? You guys already have Quadro cards in Stock, and is relatively easy for you guys to get more. If you use a bare metal hypervisor like Xen or VMware, you can virtualize your Quadro type Video Cards, so each video editor has a slice of the card. These "virtual" video cards are still recognized by the guest OS as Nvidia cards, so the tools/software that depends on Nvidia Specifc features still work like a charm. I believe this would be a more elegant, less complex and more power effcient solution than what you guys are doing now. I know that UnRAID is your go to software for storage and virtualization, but you guys owe it to yourselves and your audience, to try something new. The technology to do this is available since 2014 from Nvidia and Citrix (Xen). I guess that by now is available from all major Hypervisors, and from AMD as Well. For more details, please reffer to the video of the GDC2014 conference S4726 - Intro to virtualization. Best regards, and keep the good work. William, from Venezuela.

William Yousef Fadel hey William, for my own info (I’m a student) how do you connect different motherboards/servers together to expand your cloud setup? (More processing power to share-GPUs, CPUs & memory) Thanks in advance!
@williamyf
@williamyf 5 жыл бұрын
When you istalled your cloud (which is different than your Hypervisor), the first thing you did was to install a cloud controller. This puppy will be your friend when is time to expand. To clarify this, I'll give you two examples. KVM is a Hypervisor, Openstack is a suite of SW that uses KVM (others as well, but KVM is the most used one) to implement your cloud. HyperV is a Hypervisor, Azure is a suite of SW that implements a cloud using HyperV.... To expand your cloud setup in a normal scenario, you simply add more machines with the HW you like/need (if you need more GPU power you get one or more quad-socket machine(s) of 4 or 8u with plenty of PCIe lanes, if you need memory intensive machines, you add 1,5TB (or more) blade servers to your chassis, same for CPU or DAS, etc), connect over 25GB (preferred) or 10GB ethernet to your ToR switch (make sure your all your ethernet supports 802.1aq, or, if nothing else is available, TRILL), and, in the Openstack controller, mark those machines as available for the pool. In the best case scenario, openstack will know how to do everything by itself using IPMI, iLO, iDRAC, iBMC, and the like. In the worst case scenario, you will need to install a small agent and, after that, Openstack will take care of all the rest of the install for you... This asumes that the Hardware you are using is certified for your cloud, and that the configuration is known to the cloud controller, if not, prepare for a world of hurt, since you will have to do everything "By hand". That means you will have to install the DOM0 and special SW yourself, configure the machine, and then add it to the Openstack pool. Things are similar if you are using VMware, HyperV or Xen with the respective cloud software. Now, a clarification: In normal cloud setups, a VM can not be distributed among multiple physical machines (it can migrate from host to host, and can even have a mirror image on a second host for HA purposes, but can not execute distributed over two or more hosts). At most, for the utmost performance, what you can have is a super-duper-muscle-host which has only one VM as a guest (this is not as crazy as it seems, there are multiple advantages to have your workload as a vm or container, even if it will have all the server to itself, even if the advantages come at a slight performance penalty due to virtualization). In certain special cases, you can have a guest VM distributed over more than one machine, but this requires exotic hardware and software setups, including Infiniband (Linus did a video on infiniband a while ago, but ended up using it to transfer files only, instead of its true purpose), and special software, and the explanation is beyont the scope of a youtube comment...

@williamyf
@williamyf 5 жыл бұрын
Both things are really-really complicated. But the openstack thing I propose is much more _elegant_ than the GPU-PCIe passtrough thing Linus is doing. "If there was a video game called Sysadmin, the final boss fight would be OpenStack." Justin Clayton

William Yousef Fadel wow man, thanks so much! I’ve been getting an introduction to cloud computing recently and I’ve learned about the interactive end (choosing your hardware, etc (we’re using Azure & AWS)) but that’s really cool to know what goes on at the other side. Thanks again! Edit: in my first post I wasn’t clear in identifying hardware and cloud hardware-thanks for seeing through that.

Quick question: is it okay to, in a dual cpu setup, like this one, to have the front cpu blowing into the back cpu? If so, does it matter if there’s a gap in between the two? I looked all over the Internet and couldn’t find anything.

Dipswitches are always a problem with unfamiliar equipment and the documentation is always poor. Often it'll refer to on/off, up/down, 1/0 in the documentation but then use a different convention on the actual board labeling. Diagrams that show which direction is which usually use a black and white ultra simple image that could indicate either direction depending on whether you interpret the white or the black as the 'switch'. If you're setting mac addresses with dipswitches then it often times goes 1/2/4/8 etc but switch one could have either your lowest value or highest value (or not be used at all) and it may not tell you which way it goes. Heck sometimes it won't even tell you if it's adding or subtracting. /rant
