yep i completely agree with this, i wish more people realized not only in metal but in music in general that it's rarely the artists fault the fan base is bad, it's the fans that are a jerk when it comes to people who have different views and people who don't even listen to the band putting their say into something they don't even know about, great video btw and hopefully your feeling better!!

Well said, this video sums up a lot of gripes I’ve had with the online metal community in particular. One of the funniest sentiments I see all the time from younger people especially is, “let people enjoy things”. How about don’t let people stop you from enjoying what you like?

1:58 I used to have a lot of thoughts like this when I was younger and first getting into metal. It definitely took me a while to come around on the fact that people can like what they like and don't have to make their music fit in with a certain group to be valid, so I'm glad you brought it up here to help others who are in that situation too.

The band not delivering what fans wanted legit happened to Mr. Bungle. I went to one of their reunion shows in Feb. of 2020. The band had been gone for nearly 20 year and people around the world flew to Los Angeles to see them. Mr. Bungle was pretty vocal before hand that they wouldn't perform ANYTHING that they were known for and will perform their thrash metal demo and covers. Despite that, fans and critics were still upset about the direction they took. Myself though, I was just happy to have seen them and they put on one hell of a fun show. Was always a dream of mine to see Mr. Bungle in any capacity. Plus, they were never known for to be people pleasers anyway so I didn't feel cheated with their performance.

I hear ya on wearing other band shirts at other band concerts: in 2014, I wore my White Zombie shirt when I went to see Suffocation and Kataklysm; in 2015, I wore my OverKill shirt when I saw Nuclear Assault. And just last year, I wore my Malevolent Creation shirt when I went to see Dying Fetus. All in all, I treasure the metal bands I like and always will.

Perceived universal consensus... dig that phrase! And I have seen/heard that behaviour, for sure. Of course it has been a while since I noticed that for music but it’s nice to re-pave the road here, since I had too much of that exposure with TV stuff, egad. The main trouble I have is when folks isolate the negative stuff about a favourite and never discuss anything but that buzz-thing, still find that bizarre and bleh. Ah, career-ending scandals, yep! As I grew up, I started swallowing so many music pills. I get it, people do need to hear this. I definitely had bad musical traits growing up, but it helped fine tune what I truly enjoy today. I once got into techno so that I can hook up with girls at the raves, just an example. Even with that experience, I now feel nostalgic and find myself listening to some songs during that phase of my life and actually enjoy it.

This topic is very interesting, it has also become the reason why social media sucks most of the time when someone says something unpopular about a popular band. As you mention about Nightwish, I love the three singers. It's so boring the typical mockery towards fans of bands like KISS, Guns N' Roses, Metallica, Nirvana, Pearl Jam, Green Day, Offspring, Sum 41, Slipknot and even Amon Amarth or Cannibal Corpse, is so boring that many people question their musical tastes and even their intelligence for liking something popular, or with a certain theme. It's a shame to see people in the Rock and Metal community questioning and seeking to condemn the musical tastes and opinions of others. The important thing is that everyone focuses on their world, letting each person use their right to freedom of thought and expression. Music will always be the most important thing, not the opinions and complaints of a small group on social networks, magazines, entertainment pages and some KZfaqrs who are toxic. We have a lot of work to do against tha kind of behavior. Thanks for talk about this topics. 🤘💀

@@ronnywilson2112 this, 100%. I'm into some industrial music but mostly goth. I'm also a huge fan of Linkin Park and I grew up with their music, among so many other more popular bands. In the industrial community, we get SO MUCH shit for liking Linkin Park. Uhhhh the band themselves are fans of industrial music. Chester himself was a massive fan and admitted trying to imitate the likes of Al and few others when he was learning to sing.

@@winternightmarecrochet I understand you, I was also part of the gothic and industrial subculture in the 90's, it was similar to today but with less information, I left all kinds of social groups related to Rock, Metal or Alternative music because they were toxic and closed-minded. that they have become, despite the decades, plus I'm already in my 40s and I know a lot about the history of both subcultures. I started in music with Rock from the 60's, 70's, 80's and 90's. I had to live Grunge and the social circle I had were only Metalheads, so saying that I like Post Punk, New Wave or Synthpop was not and will never be understood by Metalheads, the same thing happens with Goths who criticize Punks and Metalheads, and Grunge. Many of these people do not understand why Goths dress the way they do, the makeup, the literature, the poetry. I even like Jazz, R&B, Funk, Flamenco, Tango, and Latin music. I also like Hip Hop but 80's and 90's, and I don't mind the stupid things that many Rappers do to get attention. Over the years I stopped giving importance to what people say, and I learned to listen to music that fills me with joy, that helps me be happy. That's why I stayed away from Black Metal, but I like Doom. It's just not taking things literally, but it seems that fanaticism blinds people not only in religion and politics, but also here in music. Let's just not be that stupid. I always say it: Listen to your inner voice and no one else, follow your tastes, live for yourself not for others.

Thanks for this. I was a goth club DJ for many years. I was there for the music - to share, explore and discover together. There was more than a handful who were there for 'the scene' or whatever you want to call it. I saw a lot of intolerance and close-mindedness when it came to music. I wish more people had the attitude you espouse here, that it's okay to just like what you like. You can be a fan of anything you want. Even if it might seem polar opposite to something else. One can enjoy Psalm 69, Go-Gos, Nirvana and Hawaiian music all at the same time. Also - nice copy of KMFDM Naive on Wax Trax.

This is a common problem with most online music communities. I don't know how many times I've been told I'm not a "real fan" since I don't like particular albums or have not liked concerts. In some ways, a real fan can be the most critical because who else is so familiar with an artist's work?

The worst part of bands is the fans, a sad but true fact especially when it comes to a band like Metallica I personally love Load and Reload, they are my favourite Metallica albums but not a lot of people like them. People should be allowed to have opinions just as long as the don't be an arse about it. 🤘

Exellent points made in the video. I really agree with the last portion of the discussion in regards to the people behind the music we love and it being okay to shit on the people if they deserve it (with ample evidence prooving it) and still enjoy the music. I have a few bands that i appreciate but wholly understand that the musicians behind the projects are pricks (burzum, mayhem, pantera, graves-era misfits to give some examples). I aint a bad person just because i enjoy the artistic craft of someone who is a prick. Many people who create art, espically those who cater to the more extreme avenues of their medium, have skeletons in their closet and opinions that may not allign with you in the best case scenario and thats okay. We're all human, and those subjectivities make us who we are.

@@KillbotAndGorGorAttack I used to be into Manson back in Jr high, I still have appreciation for some of the tunes now but as I went into high school I realized how forced the whole shtick was for him felt to me. Then I found GWAR, and then I learned who the true rulers of music in the universe were. And then I learned about the film 'groupie' and all of the nasty shit that came of that and I kinda stopped for good. It sucks about graves in my eyes cause I loved his vocals for the albums he was on. I loved how well they worked at improving the groundwork that Danzig had laid for misfits before and adding more harmony. But dude went off of his fucking rocker and I haven't been able to really openly enjoy that era since. I'm just happy that bands that were inspired by them seem, from what I have seen, to not be fucked up in the head like Graves.

I just saw Breaking Benjamin for the first time. They were with Catch Your Breath a band that just started out in 2023. I never heard of them and the singers mic was a little too low and couldn’t hear him that good. When I got back home I looked them up and listen to three songs they played at the show. Now they’re my new three favourite songs

Weeks ago, me and my brother in law saw Ghoul and Municipal Waste. He's not a metalhead at all so it was an interesting experience for him. Naturally, he was a little nervous about sticking out as a nonmetalhead. I told him, "Real metalheads don't care about what you listen to." Needless to say, he had a great time. Even went into the moshpit twice. I was so proud of him.

I play guitar in a thrash metal band. I get a variety of looks when people find out that I came from a pop punk background lol. There was this one time when I got asked "if I all but one guitar player in the world disappeared, who would you want to remain", to which I replied "Billie Joe Armstrong" while wearing a Megadeth shirt and holding an Alexi Laiho guitar. Good music is good music, and it is okay to disagree.

It's hypocritical, I know, especially since I don't always apply it 100%. I knew all about the infamous Varg long before I got into Burzum.

I started transitioning from male to female last year, and it was only within the last couple of months that I rediscovered punk rock and started to truly understand what it meant to be an individual. There have been multiple times when I embarrassingly DMed you for advice on silly dilemmas I was going through, as if your approval alone held the keys to what I could like. I now understand that I don't need to follow a bunch of rules to like something or pretend that I like some bands more than others to keep people happy. My battle jacket is primarily made up of a cross between classic rock, punk rock and heavy metal, and that diverse selection of bands/artists is a reflection of who I am and nobody else. Rediscovering punk rock (specifically DIY punk rock) has been very liberating, and I now feel more content than I've ever been in my life because of it. Another toxic thing about music fan bases can be bigotry, including, sexism, transphobia and queerphobia. There's a battle jacket group on Facebook that I'm a part of and I've received a bunch of hateful comments for having a few pride pins on my jacket. It's extremely ironic that a fan base that promotes individualism and freedom has such judgmental people in it, but I try not to let those people get to me, and I definitely don't let them drive me out of what I like. I don't need to justify my existence and happiness to them, so if they have a problem with my identity, that's a them-problem.

@drearyaugust1853 Thanks for the kind words. One thing I forgot to mention was that it was when I rediscovered Against Me! a couple of months ago that I started to get back into punk rock. Rediscovering Against Me! felt like the beginning of a major chapter in my transition. Having a transfem rockstar to look up to made me feel truly represented in music for the first time. I learned that just because I transitioned doesn't mean that I have to stop liking things that I used to. Now, I could finally be my true self.

This is my first video of yours and honestly I couldn't agree more with what you had to say. During my high school years my one "friend" group often made fun of and/or criticized me when I shared what bands I listened to, and its taken me a long time since then to just listen to whatever I like without worrying about being judged for it. I really wish these kinds of metalheads weren't so close minded and gatekeep-ey about what bands you should/shouldn't like, especially when metal is supposed to be about bringing people together. "A lot of people get attracted to group think." Sadly, it's a human biological imperative, as a social species. Real individualism is very rare. A trait of existential superiority. Here's a funny example: 20 years ago, I was in a Metal Club, with some friends. And suddenly, a friend of mine goes to the "dance pit", to headbang to a particular song that started to play. Suddenly, the opera-like female voice of Tarja kicks in. It was Nightwish. My friend returns to the bar, embarassed: "Damn'... I thought it was Children of Bodom..." LOL.
