@4 gauge - True, but the truth is Ford wasn't about to jump into trying to make their first mid engine, super high performance endurance racer without experienced help to aid them. They well knew that they didn't know squat about building this specific type of machine. They learned that very quickly in the first 2 years, having nothing to show but failure with the cars Ford of Britain produced.

Isn't it kind of ridiculous to put aside their entire team of engineers, testers, designers, etc? The film was actually not very honest to the truth because it put too much focus on certain people and events while leaving out others, as well as including fictional elements while passing on real ones.

The most profound part of the video is 2:24 - 2:43. You would never hear an employee talk about an American company like that today. The guys who worked on the GT40 project got immense pride from seeing their hard work put a smile on the CEO's face. Back when American companies actually cared an iota about their employees and their employees responded in kind.

@Paul Jensen - Believe me, anyone even remotely interested in auto racing is aware of it. It's been mentioned in all the auto journals, there are 2 trailers regarding the movie and it's being promoted as a new release in all theaters. The producers were even smart enough to give it 2 different titles - Ford vs Ferrari in America and Le Mans '66 in Europe. The Europeans would understand both titles, but unfortunately, there are too many Americans that wouldn't have a clue as to what Le Mans '66 meant. They would think it was a movie about the '66 Pontiac Le Mans!

Dude you need to do some reading on Chevrolet at Le Mans, Louis Chevrolet raced a Buick in the inaugural race at Le Man's. Chevrolet came in 8th place in 1960 in a Corvette the 7 cars in front of the Vette were Ferrari's and Austin Martan's. The GM Corvette team won Le Man's 34 laps ahead of 2nd place car in their division in 2001. The Corvette has won Le Mans 8 times out of 16 from 2001 to 2017. And I'm just barely touching on what Chevrolet has done at Le Mans. Chevrolet has more racing history at Le Mans than all the other American auto makers put together. So I'm here to say Chevrolet has darest went and also won, more that Ford could ever imagine or hope to.

@@lskiller1903 I was wondering if anybody else would remember the early 60s when Chevrolet entered some pretty much stock Corvettes. From a Brit's perspective, we were using straight sixes, which often fell just short of the Ferrari V12. I think that year when Chevy turned up the American V8s really became a more interesting prospect to British builders like Eric Boradley, who started using Chevy and Ford V8s in his Lola chassis. The GT40 was basically a Lola, but with Fords massive budget behind it and Carol Shellbys invaluable expertise, it turned out to be a winning formula. Without those Chevys turning up in the early 60s, who knows what Broadley would've designed when Ford approached him, maybe not the GT40, and maybe not a winning car.

The one race that has always captured my heart has been the 24 Hours of Le Mans, the true test of motor car endurance. @3213232 1231223 . . . That true about the budget, but I've heard another problem Ferrari had in that era was splitting the resources between sports cars and Formula 1 racing efforts. Supposedly, when the new 3 liter engine formula came along in 1966 for Formula 1 racing, Ferrari was considered a shoo-in given their engine building technology with V12s of comparable engine sizes; but the F1 team struggled. Word had it that Ferrari's F1 efforts didn't show consistency with victories until they closed down its sport car endurance racing operations.

Ford didnt bit Ferrari, yet they lied to their people and still to this day Americans think the legendary GT40 is an American car, they also think the AC Cobra is an American car, bu its also British.. @GRRB - Here we go again. "The whole racing world was developed by the more skilled British engineers and anyone else who dare say they were part of it, be damned!" First, let's try to agree that the Ford GT was the result of two countries combining both resources and technical expertise to make a winning Le Mans racer. It was not designed and built by Lola. It was designed and built by F.A.V. in Slough, UK. The People responsible for the design were British ex patriot, Roy Lunn, Chief Design Engineer for the GT40 project, and Don Frey and Ray Geddes. The final product looked very little like the Lola and had no Lola components in it. Ford Advanced Vehicles, Shelby American, Kar-Kraft and Holman Moody were responsible for the final product. As for the Shelby Cobra - noticed I said Shelby, and not AC, the very first one that came from AC Cars had a AC badge on the nose of it. It would be the last one that did, as Shelby made extensive modifications to the car and its chassis and it became legally documented as the Shelby Cobra. In short, Britain was involved in the early creation of both vehicles, but it took Shelby American, Inc. to make both cars a reality, and both cars winners! 🏆🏁🤠

Though I guess you could argue that 67 also saw an AMC Rambler break Meyer's record...but then he won the official Mexican 1000. Dayton 500, lol oh come on, there were only 6 types of cars and Fords were one of those with a whopping 15 cars in the field and about a quarter of them failed to finish. The 67 Le Mans saw 11 Fords fielded, 2 finished the race! 1967 Indy 500, Come on, name one car that was not running a Ford engine. Foyte won, on a Coyote Sheraton Thompson, that used a Ford engine. (Which everyone did except for like 5 cars running an Offenhauser engine.) So who else has seen lots of success in racing in a single year? Lancia, Porsche, Ferrari...and hell we could say the Boulton Carriage won 100% of all the automotive races in 1867.

Amon talks about Bruce McLaren telling him to go like hell, said he was doing about 217 down the long straight. Frank Gardner driving another Ford GT a Mk11 I think arrived at the hairpin only to find the road covered in sand,Somehow he slowed down and got around.Gardner rarely told stories like that was a very quiet guy utterly involved in motor racing until he retired in Australia as a team manager for BMW.These guys drove in conditions we could not imagine today. Two other amazing cars besides the Ferraris were the Porche Carrera 6 and the 1300cc Alpines that we’re doing over 160 down the long straight. Make it fast and make it last. The 60's were some great times in American/European racing. I was in high school during those times and followed racing with Road & Track and other racing magazines. It was a shame Ken Miles didn't live to see the LeMan's victories. It's unlikely Ford will get into building LMP racers so an outright victory isn't going to happen. I'm still satisfied to be able to cheer for any Ford GT class win. I hadn't expected Ford to get back into racing at all, so this is pretty exciting to me.

Wait! Ken Miles did race at Le Mans in 1966 and should have won but politicking by Ford brass prevented it from happening. Ford wanted the headlines to read: "FORD WINS LEMANS!" and not "MILES FIRST TO WIN DAYTONA, SEBRING, AND LEMANS IN ONE YEAR!" so they decided on a "dead heat" of the GT40s crossing the finish all abreast. The French would not have it claiming that dead heat was not possible due to the slant staggered start formation of the cars. So Miles was screwed! (McLaren and Amon were declared the winners in a sister car to Ken Miles) Then 2 months later Miles was killed testing the Ford J-car at Riverside, CA.

It was toward the very end of the race that the F.I.A. changed their minds! No, the GT40 was designed and built in England, with funds from Ford. Interestingly all this was done just 22 miles away from where they designed and built the AC Cobra in Thames Ditton, again with a Ford V8. When the Brits and Americans get together on projects they tend to do quite well. Like the P51 Mustang, being a pretty good WWII fighter aircraft... It being designed and built in the USA to British specification with an English engine, the exact opposite to the AC Cobra...

Z. Ray Richter Arguably? By the time Ford got that thing winning there was nothing left of it that was British. And when the moaning started that it was 'British' in 1966 after the first win, Ford got themselves ready for '67 with the MKIV. A car that was a 100% redesign & completely American from the start and proceeded to utterly dominate the '67 event with two born American drivers at the helm whom the press said couldn't possibly win driving together. The Poms like to make out that were Ford never involved a Lola would have won four years in a row, & even if it had you can bet an American V8 would have powered it! 😂 Credit must be given however to John Wyer. Without him persevering with the car Ford would not have got wins 3 & 4.

Investor01 - Ferrari didn't need to spend that kind of money simply because they had many years of experience in endurance racing to get by on, while Ford had none. Building a winning endurance car is a hell of a lot more difficult and expensive than building a NASCAR stock car. The whole reason Ferrari listened to Ford's offer to buy him was Enzo was almost bankrupt from spending so much on racing! Ford was starting from scratch while Ferrari existed to build race cars and had been doing so for years. Sure, the money was necessary to make a winner, but it took a whole lot more than that to do it! Spending a great deal of money will get you to the starting line, but will guarantee nothing after that!

@Sathu - No, they didn't. Leo Beebe had the initial idea of having them all cross the line together, and after Henry Ford gave the OK, they approached the governing body, The ACO who replied they would work with Ford on this idea. There was about 2.5 hours left and they managed to get them huddled together, this after Miles was over a lap ahead, and cross the line together. Then the AOC proclaimed that you can only have one winner, the car that has travelled the furthest distance. There was nothing done "on purpose".
@Loulovesspeed
@Loulovesspeed 4 жыл бұрын
@K J - Ford wasn't the only one who didn't know the rules - the ACO governing body was clueless too! That's why they OK'd it at first, and only changed their minds when the race was over and they had realized it was impossible to have 3 winners. Keep in mind, this idea was brand new and untried before and it looked to be a great way for Ford to show total dominance at le Mans, and not just a one car victory.

Carroll Shelby used to come in this grocery store I worked at in Bel Air and he was a real engineering nerd. He was down to earth and loved talking about cars. This was in the mid 90's and he told me about a Pontiac or Buick at the time that he was impressed with.

I met Carroll Shelby at the 2003 Atlantic City Auto Show in New Jersey. Hearing his voice is crazy. This is so cool.

@Richard Letanosky - My favorite Ford slogan was displayed over the very first Cobra at a car show and it said...………"Ford...Improving The breed Through Open Competition."

Quite ironic that this video is released just when the movie "Ford vs Ferrari" is around the corner

Such an amazing achievement. Just a shame the 1, 2, 3, finish is sullied by Ken Miles having his (well deserved) 1st place stolen from him by Bruce McLaren.

@Investor01 In just a few years, Ford & Shelby put together a team, assembled & tuned a car, & made it reliable to beat a team that was still (arguably) at the height of it's power. Ferrari may have been starting it's decline, but only just. Ferrari showed up with a bright new engineer, Mauro Forghieri at that time. Who was a force to be reckoned with. Not to mention, at the same time Porsche was also putting every effort they could in to being competitive a Le Man. Ford did spend several fortunes to be competitive but when considering the deficit of experience they, it took that just to bring them up to speed. My comment though, was mostly aimed at shaming Bruce McLaren, so I may have made a hyperbole.

@Investor01 - The very fact that you believe that money alone can bring the victories that Ford earned, tells me you clearly know nothing about researching, designing, building and extensively testing endurance cars! Read "Go Like Hell" by A.J. Baime and you will be able to make much more intelligent comments about endurance racing!

@@MidwestFarmToys Very true. I just exaggerate to put a bigger point on it. It is also an inside thing between my dad & I over F1 teams.

Getting to see the original GT that Ken Miles in this race drove 4 years ago was incredible. If you get the chance to see it at the Shelby muesem in Bolder Colorado do it.
