Charles is actually pretty smart. He's just limited by his coding. But he's definitely self-aware. Just not to the same level as Greg or Bodger. :)

it's worse than that. They have sentience, but they're still bound by their code. Just imagine that kind of existence, being self aware enough to recognize patters, knowing what is going to happen next, but still not being able to do anything to alter your own actions. Having someone threaten your life if you don't do what he says, knowing that he just killed the last five people around you after they didn't do what he had said, but to still not be able to comply even if you want to live.

There is an episode where the Warlock (Adam) tries to bring another NPC (a woodcutter) to sentience - but he furiatingly fails. I get the impression that the Warlock may have been the first to gain sentience and he is trying to help all the others break free of their program.

Right at the start, I noticed that there's a grayed out question mark above his head as the muggers approach. That usually indicates that the NPC is in the middle of an ongoing quest that was taken by a player-adventurer. So I started to wonder, where is the adventurer *now* if the NPC Quest Giver is stranded out in the woods by himself? Well, if it was an escort quest, maybe the adventurer moved along too fast & left the NPC behind & he's scripted to stop until the adventurer comes back to the escort duty. Or maybe the adventurer was killed by attacking bandits or a wild animal, had to respawn & is traveling to get back to where he left off. Maybe the player's interface dropped off the internet. Maybe the player's computer errored out & crashed back to the desktop. At any rate, it's not totally unreasonable to figure out how the NPC got stuck out in the middle of the woods alone while in "quest mode."

@@MidnightDStroyer iirc, there's another skit showing that Eugene (our poor quest-giving NPC here) is of the Infuriatingly Slow variety. He WAS following before he got caught in the Mugger Loop, just... one itty bitty little shuffle-step at a time. Odds are his Adventurer got sick of hanging around and is waiting somewhere for him to catch up, not realizing Eugene's actually stuck this time.

Thats cool tho. The blacksmith, greg and the warlock are already kinda self aware. Ben the mugger would be the next i guess. Altho also the warlock tried to get the lumberjack to get self aware but failed to do so. Something got those 3 out of their game code. And they're trying to find a way to completely break free while still kinda stuck in the game. Thats what i think is going on

This is by far my favorite one so far, the timing is perfect, it's creepy and deeply meaningful lol, watching that one npc slowly become aware of the loop that is his life, and yet not be able to break out of his actions even after he's certain there's no movement or meaning to what he does. Reminds me of the stanly parable, or that tng episode where time loops and they can't get out

I want more adventures of muggers. Want whole story arc where they start off as muggerd and end up saving the world just to go back to mugging people. Them not being too bright makes for a good ongoing theme.

They exist, just check their DnD series and DnD channel where they play entire world saving campaigns using their epic npc characters, the latest one features one of the muggers (Sadly since the other also plays the blacksmith they cant have both at same time). It starts with him waking up after a hungover and immediately proceeds to rob the peach farmer which came to deliver a supply of fertilizer (Read human sh...t) to greg the garlic farmer (Epic npc man himself) and he realizes his gold from his previous nights ahem... "work" is missing as well as a bunch of items from the whole honeywood village (Gregs frying pan, Baraduns spellbook, the blacksmith hammer and comissioned helm) and they find out the trail of the creatures that seemed to have stolen all the previous night and join forces as a party to get it all back uncovering in the way a conspiracy between traitorous high sorcerers that wish to depose baradun (Guy is an Ahole but at least he gets his job done keeping the invading orcish horde out of skycraft) and join with the orcish shamans to take over the world. ABSOLUTELY BRILLIANT! heres the episode 1 link, its their 4rth campaign overall and this is the latest one and first featuring the mugger, they do a half hour session then complement the video by filming the battle scenes on character with their attires: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/asx1p5equrOraHU.html

Currently watching this video and going through the entire playlist of Epic NPC Man before going on to Red Dead Logic and most of the ones so far have been very enjoyable to watch and make me laugh. These are the kind of videos that I love to watch when I’m having a bad day. Keep at it Viva La Dirt League, you guys rock 😄

The 2nd mugger is more of a player than a npc. He is smart and he realised that he was in a loop but he can't do anything as his lines are scripted.
