On January 1st, 1945, the Allied Air Forces welcomed the New Year with an unexpected, low-level attack from the Luftwaffe.
Named Operation Baseplate, or Operation Bodenplatte, the German attack launched 850 fighters and bombers against 17 Allied airfields in Belgium, the Netherlands, and France.
The goal of Baseplate was to achieve air superiority by taking advantage of sleeping and hungover Allied soldiers. The fighters sought to destroy or critically damage as many runways, hangars, and aircraft as possible.
This operation was initially planned for mid-December 1944. But bad weather delayed it several times until January 1st, 1945. Secrecy for Operation Baseplate was so tight that not all German officers were informed of the plan.
This terrible organization ultimately led to one of the most remarkable self-inflicted blunders of World War 2 when the Germans mistakenly shot down fighters from over 25% of their air units. Of the event, General der Jagdflieger, Adolf Galland, would say, [QUOTE] "We sacrificed our last substance."

If you want a good read about this operation read "To Win the Winter Sky". A captured Luftwaffe pilot commented as he watched damaged and destroyed allied aircraft being replace with new aircraft in short order, "and that is why we are losing the war'. At this point in the war the sheer amount of material the Allies could produce was awesome. The reason why the German flak gunners were so trigger happy was that they were not told of the operation but also there not used to seeing Luftwaffe planes at low level and therefore assumed that they were allied planes (which were plentiful) and accordingly let fly.

At this point, most German Aircraft factories had been destroyed or disabled by lack of: parts, power, or manpower. When German or Allied Aircraft returned damaged or were damaged on the ground, they were used for parts to repair other damaged aircraft... However, there were no replacement German Aircraft being produced, so they kept rebuilding damaged Aircraft until it was obvious that there was no Aviation Fuel, Ammo, or Replacement pilots coming their way. At this point, many German Aircraft on the Eastern Front tried to make their way to Airbases they knew would be captured by the American or British Forces...

@@joeyjamison5772 The Germans and Japanese lost because they bit off more than they could chew. The Germans lost because while their cities and factories were being bombed day and night places like the Willow Run Ford plant were producing a B24 bomber every hour around the clock, that's just them, you also had the British, Canadian's, Australian's and anyone else concerned on the Allied side producing war equipment 24/7, even the Soviets were manufacturing as much as they could from the smoking ruins of cities. And our personal were much better trained then any from the Axis forces, the "unstoppable" reputation that the German and Japanese forces had at the beginning was predicated on them fighting ill prepared forces with outdated equipment, once they were introduced to professional fighting forces they started losing from that point on, in Europe it was the Battle of Britian and in the Pacific it was Midway. It's one thing to break a treaty and sneak attack someone but when it came down to an actual fight they got their asses handed to them.

Hermann Goring wasn't fit to command the entire air force (Luftwaffe). Hitler gets a lot of flak for making bad decisions but Goring was just as bad. He was basically a yes man just so he would be more favorable to Hitler. Like when the 6th army was trapped at Stalingrad, Hitler was debating what to do and with Goring telling him they could supply them no problem with air drops, Hitler made the disastrous decision to stay. Is it possible to get two tanks here? It's not only possible but we could have a hundred there in half the time! He should've been fired after operation sea lion failed (invasion of British islands). Hitler may be cruel and evil but he wasn't a dummy but why he let Goring fool him, I don't understand. But maybe it was a good thing Goring was in command, as if Germany had a competent Luftwaffe command, the war may have gone very differently.

I remember saying "where were you when it started?" and he replied, "In the middle of Melsbroek Airfield, in the pilot's seat of a Mitchell doing an engine test, when my mate tapped me on the shoulder; I looked up and through the windscreen, saw fighters approaching. My mate said "The Spitfires are up early this morning". 'cept, of course they weren't Spitfires..."

Good coverage of this major operation. German meticulous planning and co-ordination were clearly severely affected by this stage of the war, but even so, nature had much to blame for the lack of any real affect of Operation Bodenplate. Had it been launched as intended to coincide with the start of the Ardennes battle, it might have had considerable impact. This would have been especially so had it been launched as a support operation to be aimed at reducing Allied air support for the Bulge battle by a number of large and dispersed attacks on American and British airfields housing ground attack squadrons.

This is a great addition to another video I viewed on this. Not at all a criticism, at the 11:25 minute mark I clearly see a B-29 on fire surrounded by P-51's. I assume this was a photograph from the Pacific theatre. This video does do an outstanding job of making it's very educational point & I mention this in case that photo was from the lowlands on 01'01 1945. Thanks!

I have read about this event. Training and planning failures. Go check your data on the Spitfire. The 56th Fighter Group led by Colonel Hubert Zemke scored over 500 kills before its ace commander's transfer. The P-47 made its combat debut in April 1943, when a Thunderbolt with the U.S. Army’s 4th Fighter Group brought down a Focke Wulfe FW-190 over France. Over the next two years, the planes would fly more than half a million sorties in Europe and the Pacific and would claim nearly 4,000 enemy aircraft.

I love Dark Docs for an American perspective on things. I come from NZ, and by our standards, Yankees speak too slow for us. So this narrator is good, he doesn't put me to sleep. Mark Felton's video on Operation Baseplate is better though.

The history of errant ground to air started with the 1st combat flights. The difference with the Luftwaffe at the end was that they needed every single craft as they segued from an airpower to a memory over the Reich...For a case study in modern air defense and its importance, go back and reference the Falklands war of 1982.

A for narration but F- for graphics. When one is doing a report upon a German action in Europe, the use of Pacific footage is foolish. B-29s weren't used in Europe and the obvious Pearl Harbor aftermath films spoil the show. Using biplane footage is just as unprofessional.

I prefer to listen to instead of watching these documentaries, because the stock footage used is not well chosen. Talking about a bunch of Luftwaffe fighters heading to attack Allied airfields while showing a flight of Ju-52 transport aircraft... 😒

It's really amazing that they wouldn't tell the flak commanders, I get that they didn't want it to get out early but they needed the commanders controlling the aa to know. They would in turn tell their crew the day of the attack. Just shows you how badly Germany was beaten at that time. They were used to everything working in the early years and when it didn't they did not know how to fix it.

The US had a similar situation with an airborne attack on Sicily . The US aircraft flew over an allied naval convoy who had not been informed that friendly planes were going to fly over. The result was many C-47s were shot down containing paratroopers from the 82nd Airborne Division.
