Dr. Brian Fikkert is a Professor of Economics and Community Development and the Founder and President of the Chalmers Center for Economic Development at Covenant College. He is coauthor of the best-selling book When Helping Hurts: How to Alleviate Poverty Without Hurting the Poor…and Yourself as well as Helping Without Hurting in Short-Term Missions, Helping Without Hurting in Church Benevolence, and From Dependence to Dignity: How to Alleviate Poverty Through Church-Centered Microfinance. Dr. Fikkert earned a Ph.D. in economics from Yale University, specializing in international economics and economic development.
In this conversation, Brian and I talk about his book When Helping Hurts, which is easily the top 5 most influential books I’ve ever read. We also talk the pros and cons of short term mission trips and how churches can best partner with poorer churches without doing unintentional harm.

As a missionary, I really appreciate this video, the interview, and the overall theological implications too. Our culture is obsessed with results and resources - but relationships seem to be the only thing valuable in God's economy that actually result in disciples.

Such a great conversation. The air we breath has cultivated an environment where the only poverty we often see is material poverty. We don’t even realize there is poverty all around us, even in the wealthiest neighborhoods. Really like how Brian emphasizes that this isn’t an excuse to do less but do more, but do it differently.

Certainly Americans need an attitude adjustment and some framing before they go on short term missions trips. But my greatest memories from trips are just genuine human connections made that changed me forever. In the Dominican Republic I met a young woman who was living in a remote village, wasting away from illness. She was like a skeleton. She just about begged me to come into her house - a shack - and got a suitcase out from under the bed. She showed me a photo of herself with two kids, beautiful, well-dressed and healthy. She pressed the photo into my chest and told me to pray for her, and not to forget her. She insisted I take the photo and pray. And I did. I have. Good things happen on missions trips. It's not all dumb American creating more problems than they fix by handing out candy.

This one was so good I had to add another comment. It was eye opening to hear the complexity and nuance behind all of this, and I’m glad to hear some churches are actually taking the hard look in the mirror to see if what they’re is causing harm and changing their approach to prioritize what people need versus what makes the supporting group wants.

Very interesting chat. Americans are very generous minded, but giving handouts does only promote demands for more and being seen as a cash cow and not a real person with a real desire to actually help.
