All those laptops and tablets those humans had should be fried instead given that even if the electricity is at a current that the device is rated for, the internal components are not and they will create spark gaps/short circuiting between the various components and fry the internal electronics. This is what a CME/EMP does. It bombards devices with free electrons and causes either overloading or spark gaps/short circuiting. This is why we're so lucky the Carrington Event happened in the 1800s and not today, because it would collapse human society. To give you an idea of how many electrons were flying through the air, telegraph machines would still function even when not plugged into an electrical source. And telegraph wires got hit with so many electrons that it warmed up the copper wiring and actually started several fires because of how hot it got. Modern electronics are also much more at risk to spark gaps and short-circuiting like this than older electronics. Smaller gaps in the components. Smaller components. Less robust.
