When I Came Out Of The Cellar - sung by Maria Friedman
From the musical "Spin Of The Wheel" at the Comedy Theatre, London
Music and lyrics by Geoff Morrow. Lyrics below:
I was an unusual child
I had this friend... I called him Horace
Of course he wasn’t real
But whenever I’d need somebody that I could talk to
There was this little river with a cave we’d walk to
Yeah me and Horace we got on OK
Cos he’d agree with everything I’d say
I was a difficult child
I used to steal things... well Horace did
And hide them in the cave
My mother had this picture of the day she married
A yellow dress and in her hand a hat she carried
It seems a crazy thing now to confess
But all I wanted was my own yellow hat and dress
When I came out of the cellar
No longer was life all a blur
I knew that a new hat and dress didn’t matter
What mattered was bein’ like her
I can remember her smiling
And saying that she loved me so
Then she just closed her eyes
You know when somebody dies
Well the cellar’s the best place to go
Dick was a funny guy
He didn’t love me... there I can say it!
And not even cry one tear
I had fainting fits, bronchitis, asthma... all in succession
The doctor said I had a case of severe depression
Where could I go to leave the world behind?
Down those little steps of darkness in your mind
Now I’ve come out of the cellar
I’m ready to face life anew
But this time, yes this time, I’m coming out fighting
Cos that’s what she’d want me to do
OK so far luck’s not been with me
But it’s my turn to try and stand tall
Yes like Cinderella
I’ve come out of the cellar
And I want to go to the ball! Cos it wasn’t much fun in the cellar at all
