As far as I've heard, the term "3 dog night" came from sled dogs. The driver would sleep with the dogs for warmth when they spent the night on the trail, and, as was said, if it was a really cold night, it was a 3 dog night.

As others have noted, Three Dog Night was a band that had three great singers, all capable of singing lead on hits. Hits included "Black and White," "Joy to the World," "Shambala," "One," "An Old Fashioned Love Song," and "Mama Told Me Not to Come." If you like the late 60s - early 70s kind of hippie style music, you'll love these guys. Another band from the same era that you might enjoy is Blood, Sweat, and Tears (a Canadian-American group).

Radio has fallen off younger people's radar for at least the last 25 years and they were conditioned to listen to rap, hip hop, and other ugly and irrelevant music. So a great many of them are only discovering the treasure trove of rock and blues we were lucky enough to grow up with in the 1960s and 70s. And many younger folks are making the switch over to rock and blues now. Since about 2016 record industry sales have been consistently around 75% in the 1970s and earlier era. The other 25% is for all other eras and styles of music. So rap, hip hop and modern pop are fast getting ignored as people just want to hear the mostly Classic Rock style of music. What a relief! With all the other problems this world has at least people are getting some musical taste back! 🤔👌😉😎💖

If you were around from '69-'74, you know Three Dog Night. They were all over the radio and had an amazing catalog of music. Pretty much all were covers by some great songwriters and musicians that didn't do well. They put their own spin on them and ended up with a number of hits. A live performance of any of their songs is a must.

Three Dog Night did not write many of their own songs but as a group between 1969 to 1974 they had 11 top ten hits with 3 number 1 hits. Their talent was in the arrangement and vocals. Many of the songs that others have mentioned are worth a listen.

Glad to see you're reacting to Three Dog Night, they have so many good songs. My favorite is "Black and White" which is about regardless of skin color, we are all human beings. "Never Been to Spain" is a cover, it was written and first recorded by Hoyt Axton. The name comes from Australian aborigines sleeping with dogs around them to keep warm. On especially cold nights, they would sleep with three dogs, hence a three dog night.

Having been stationed in Spain while in the US Navy I agree with everything in this song. And it is a staple on my playlists. I remember when it came out and was played on the radio I loved it then and still do. Along with many other 3 Dog Night songs: Joy to the World, Shambala, Mama Told Me, The Show Must Go On and An Old Fashioned Love Song.

Phil, I'm not sure this song gave you enough to get your teeth into. So how about some background? "Never Been to Spain" was written by Hoyt Axton, a folk singer songwriter, who also wrote the somewhat psychedelic "Joy to the World," also performed by Three Dog Night. He wrote "The Pusher," performed by Steppenwolf. "One" is an early hit by Three Dog Night, and it was written by Harry Nilsson, famous for "Everybody's Talkin'" and "Without You." "Mama Told Me Not to Come" was written by witty songsmith Randy Newman, famous for "You Can Leave Your Hat On," "I Love LA," and "Short People." "An Old Fashioned Love Song" was written by Paul Williams, who also wrote "We've Only Just Begun" and "Rainy Days and Mondays" for the Carpenters.

I would suggest "One is the Loneliest Number" and "joy to the world". Hoyt Axton, wrote this song, including "Joy To The World" for 3 Dog Night. If you've seen the movie "Gremlins". he's the man that had the original "gremlin". and also did a bunch of Motel 6 commercials in the 80s... that's my memory of him. Although he did have a musical career in his own right. He was actually born in Oklahoma, in 1938 - that's reason for the reference.

Not a cover band because they made most of their COVERS POPULAR. My point is, in that case Frank Sinatra and Dean Martin were simply cover artists, get my point. By the way Three Dog Night cut an Elton John & Bernie Taupin song called "Lady Samantha" but they did it before Elton was even heard of, hell he may have still been called Reginald lol.

@@Crazywater1976 Yea, that my point, Linda Rondstadt covered a lot of songs also, I think her Tumbling Dice is better than the Stones version, but she covered sons that were already hots a lot of times. The Eagles however had to rerelease Despardo they copied Linda's version and it became a hit.

The three dog night had many great hits. One of my favorites was Moma told me to come . Across in the early 70s, you could hardly turn on the radio without hearing Joy to the world. It's not the Christmas song.

This was the 70's music I grew up with! These guys had three different great lead singers (All the time!) and wrote a lot of great songs! Everyone knew the lyrics and loved singing along. Got to check out; Mama told me not to come. Black and White Shambala Joy to the world An old fashioned love song! And nobody else sounds like 3 dog night!! They were stellar! Enjoy the music

I met and got autographs on my Three Dog Night Captured LIVE at the Fourm. Each signed their picture on the album cover. Was awesome and i"ve seen them in concert 7 or 8 times in my life. One of my all time favs so glad you are going down this rabbit hole!

It will blow your minds with their vocals! Nothing like you've ever heard before. Then just watch the whole Live on Soundstage 1975 Concert. They had 11 top ten hits. Three songs hit number one, "Joy to the World", "Mamma Told Me Not to Come", "Black and White". I love these 3 Dogs! 2 other favourite songs of theirs "One" and "Easy to be Hard". “Insane” as in insanely beautiful. That’s what fits the context of the following lines IMO. When it was released when I was a kid I thought it meant crazy but as I got older “insanely beautiful” made a lot more sense to me, anyway.

This song was written by Hoyt Axton, who also wrote the Three Dog Night hit "Joy to the World". He once appeared on an episode of WKRP in Cincinnati.

Three Dog Night, great songs. The other guys were the backup band. The three singers are the group, all singers singing three part harmony. Many, many hits. I grew up listening to their hits.

Thanks for dipping your toes into 3DN. I've listened to songs on the "Best of 3 Dog Night" album at LEAST a 1000 times during the last 50 years. They don't get the credit they deserve. They had 19 songs that charted from 1969 to 1974. Joy To The World was their biggest hit but I was always partial to Mama Told Me Not To Come. ❤🎶❤

2nd concert I ever saw was Three Dog Night ( support act was The Guess Who) cost me $3.50 , what a great show even though it was over 50 years ago now. Never tire of listening to some of their classic songs.
