The Britishers called it the Mutiny of the Sepoys. The story about the Chapati is absolutely true. My mother used to relate it to us together with other stories of independence. She said men on horseback travelled thru out the length and breath of India carrying chapatis in their hand which were then distributed and he was given more to take forward. Your acceptig the chapati meant you were in. it was a confirmation. Like that the chapatis travelled from village to village garnering the people together in this which was our first war of independence.

I am a 46 year old chinese man. I first met my partner in the usa studying our mba. We met because we were both intl students and unfamilar to usa culture and customs. Yet we bonded, oh yes we bonded. Over butter chicken, prata, and similarities in culture. We come from a culture where we would die to save our parents. We come from a great similar culture of piety, loyalty, and love of all things different. Indians and chinese are natural allys, the problem is language. Fortunately the west gave us english andwe bonded and so bonded till today. We have a border dispute, but we can overcome it. Through language communication and butter chicken. Trust me, we all want the same things. Leta our govt resolve the border dispute once and for all, and!! Most important, let our people communicate. Because once we do, its so beautiful the indian culture, and so is the Chinese culture.

Mount Kailash has been a part of India & Hindu culture since millennia . have you ever seen Indians asking for its political integration ever ? no ! your leaders go like " X was a part of China 200 years ago - so it's Chinese " " Y was a part of China 300 years ago - so.. Chinese " the fact being even if X & Y were NOT a part of China 100 years more into the history or 100 years later ; China claims it. every region was a part of different Empires at different times in History . how come Chinese claim ( based on History ) of a particular region becomes more stronger than any other nation's claim ?

I can't agree more, I am quite well aware of the conflicts and mistrust between India and China. Many countries will be super happy if China and India goes to war with each other, Those powers will assist us so we can destroy each other. I hope that better sense will prevail and the two oldest civilization will becomes friends or at least not harm each other unnecessarily.

@@SenorSol Do not take it in a literal sense. Memories get passed on from one generation to the next. Much of it is also documented in books, documrntaries, movies and such. He may have some ancestral properties with "colonial" stories behind it. Look at where he is in the context of history - his destiny - a quantized pocket of colonial past is thriving elsewhere in this world.

It wasn't the first war against British. Rani Velu Nachiyar (3 January 1730 - 25 December 1796) was a queen of Sivaganga estate from c. 1780-1790. She was the first Indian queen to wage war with the East India Company in India. She is known by Tamils as Veeramangai ("brave woman"). With the support of Hyder Ali's army, feudal lords, the Maruthu Brothers, Dalit commanders, and Thandavarayan Pillai, she fought the East India company. 🙋🙋🤷

Internal military conflicts between local principalities, the Moghul empire and sometimes against the British or French were many in the XVIII century.

But she wasn't the first Queen to wage war against Brits or win it, neither it was a national war of Indian independence, assuming First war means a national war here because every kingdom fought and majority of them won against Brits. Yes, the story of Chapati distribution to the mass to confirm the unity and wishing the revolt has historical significance. That mutiny was not successful, but some hundred years the Indian Naval mutiny really really scared the hell out of Britishers and forced them to leave. You should do a video on that story.

BRICS was created to stop this & protect themselves from $ , but was moving slow on dedollarisation. Indians brought the Chapati to East African Coast during colonial times now its a delicacy being sold everywhere. It has become a staple here in Kenya. Indian population in Kenya about 100,000. How about Chai/Tea? I thought Chai was swahili for Tea but i heard indians in India saying Chai referring to Tea too. I'm curious. Tea is the biggest export for Kenya.

Tea came to India from China. Chinese language has 2words for tea. One is "Cha" that became Chai in Hindi and another was "Tey" that became Tea in English. We Indians got tea from China.

Well, now i get terrified when i see blood pudding, bacon, processed meats, like sausage first thing in the morning as English breakfast. If those gout enhancing, cholestrol laden, super unhealthy foods do not scare the hell out of you, well, then even humble chapati will scare you.

And yet the average Indian has a 12-year lower life expectancy than that of the average European, I wonder why that is? Indians eat a LOT of fried foods, cooked in really unhealthy carcinogenic cheap oils, too much sugar (obvs!) hence the sky-high rates of diabetes, not enough fresh fruits and vegetables, and cook the living sh*t out of most vegetables! Now that scares me!

@@barryphillips6845 Not really, ghee is way more healthy than lard and other types of animal fat, i can give you several pointers to prove this fact. Btw, ghee is just one option, tradionally indian households use mustard oil, sesame oil, coconut oil (check Jennifer Aniston's post about why it is so healthy)

Thanks a ton for your series. Please keep continue these series and make indian to go back to dark ages where our ancestors corpse are still hanged at every corner of street, their body burns 🔥with ashes in the air and dried bodies in crores number fainting their living spirit in Bengal Famine. We are indebted to these indian more than anything I'm this world. Kindly make us remind as we indians seems to forget easily.

I remember this when my teacher explained in school If you are accepting chapati = you are giving your consent ( means you’re in ) They gathered such a unity for that revolution, but it was Mangal Pandey who lost his cool and spoiled the plan!

Correct, Pandey lost his temper and attacked officers ahead of schedule. Not a hero but a fool. One of several incidents and warnings which should have alerted the British, who felt too secure in command to pay heed.

A unique and absolutely amazing anecdote yet from the history, shrouded with a mystery... Palki ka jawab nahin.. Amazing how just a few pieces of common Indian bread or Chapati, could be a part of the 1857- mutiny ...The hard times, faced by the people during the British rule during the period, very explicitly portrayed here. Storytelling is an art, but the way Palki narrates an incident, it's as if these incidents play on a celluloid ...

My dad was a welder, at birmid qualcast, west midlands, 🇬🇧, he was always talking about weld repairs on chapati! PLATE, The labourers would cook them on the constantly burning furnace, 🔥,. Great storytime with Palki ❤

This has been mentioned in many British memoirs and stories. My older relatives who were born in the late 18th century were convinced it was some sort of code, and mentioned as much to their progeny

The First War Of Independence 1800-1801: "JAMPU THEEVU PROCLAMATION OF INDEPENDENCE" was issued on June 16, 1801 by Maruthu Pandiyar brothers from the tiruchi fort, Tamil Nadu, calling for people of all castes and communities to unite their fight against european domination. On 24 October 1801, Maruthu brothers were hanged by british along with 500 other male family members in the fort of Tirupputhur, which is now Sivaganga district, Tamil Nadu. The British allowed a male heir from the Marudu Pandyar family to live, but later exiled him to Penang, Malaysia due to fears that the child would rebel against the British. The document is a significant historical artefact. It represents one of the earliest organised attempts at evicting the english east india company from india.

The mutiny of the Sepoys, though in breach of the oaths they have sworn, was forgiven by the British. Who overcame the mutiny with outstanding resolution and courage.

South Indians particularly Tamil and Telugu freedom fighters were never given importance. I don't know why? Rani Velu Nachiyar was a queen of sivagangai estate in southern tamilnadu from 1760 - 1790..She was the first queen who fought against british colonial powers in india, even long before the queen jhansi rani..She is still celebrated by thamizh people as veera mangai
