Smoked is best! I once had a hickory smoked Hachiya persimmon in Korea. They were hung up on a twig in the smoke path of the wood chimney heating the cabin in the mountains. Delicious. All of the sugars became carmelized and gooey.

I love persimmons! My grandfather used to buy them for me when I was a kid growing up in Russia. Best persimmons I have ever picked were slightly rotten on a side, cut the bad side out and enjoy!

Because there is a long time between seasons for these little gems, I tend to forget just how flavorful and sweet they are. Go and enjoy them!

fuyu persimmons are soooo good. i need to find the hichiya persimmons. i heard that "bletting" can ripen them (astringent varieties) faster (putting them in a container with an apple or banana)

Thanks for this video. I bought 6 persimmons today at the farmers market and I didn't like the fuzzy taste. Now I know why. I have to wait until it's fully riped.

Never heard the weather prediction theory on Persimmons. Very interesting. Of course, most of the Persimmons sold here are coming from different areas, so not sure it would tell us anything about the winter here in Northern Utah. For that we turn to the Farmer's Almanac. If you believe that we will be spooning, oops, I mean shoveling a lot of snow this year. Thanks for watching and commenting!

Tried the fuyu persimmon 2 yrs ago I think. Very sweet fruit which was too much for me. But back there I did not eat much fruit. I could probably not be bother now as I eat SO much fruit now!!! I would eat fruit all day. I will give it another try. They taste kind of cinnamini (if that is a word) to me.

I had heard years ago from a friend of mine, that a persimmon when cut will show either a fork, spoon or knife inside the fruit. Call it an old wifes tale or farmers tale I don't know, but it will show one of the three. If a knife shows, it reveals icy winter, spoon you'll be digging out of a lot of snow, and I forget what the fork stands for. I don't recall which way you're to slice it, I presume across rather than how you just did from side to side. Let me know will you/ And what state are you in though. Thanks, enjoy your vid's very much.

The Produce Guy makes very clear the difference in the two kinds of persimmons. Do it wrong and you may double up in pain for the rest of the day. It's a little worse than that "fuzzy feeling in your mouth!"

The persmmons I eat are crunchy, but are there any forms of persimmons that is as soft as a tomato?
@YourProduceGuy
@YourProduceGuy 10 жыл бұрын
The Hachiya variety (the one that grew in my backyard as a boy) must be soft before eating or you get that fuzzy/puckery sensation in your mouth. I've got the Persimmons from the video ripening right now and hope to make something with them so you can see how they need to be in order to eat them.

Is it sweet like a fruit or more like a tomato taste?

It is sweet like a fruit. Nothing like a tomato in it's taste.

Persimmons and tomatoes are not cousins. The botanical classification of "berry" has only to do with morphology - shape and development of the fruit - and has nothing to do with being genetically related. The fact that Persimmons and some tomatoes look similar is pure coincidence in this regard. Persimmons are in the family Ebenaceae (tropical trees and shrubs such as Ebony), and tomatoes are in the family Solanaceae, along with potatoes, eggplant, bell and chili peppers, tobacco, nightshade, etc.
