A lot of this is me, but my bitterness didn't turn me into a person who tries to bring others down. It turned me into an heartless person, who only worries about themselves.

I grew up shy and introverted, bullies and manipulators took full advantage; this embittered me and at age 50 I'm still not fully over it

I'm bitter. But don't have many of these characteristics. I'm bitter towards people who I thought were close to me but turned out to be shit talking back stabbers. Maybe I'm a grudge holder not bitter. But aren't they almost same thing ?

Sounds like you’re describing narcissistic psychopaths. I recently realized that this is what I had been dealing with all of my life with my siblings and parents. I distance myself from them now. Things are much better.
