I think subs are better just because the voice actors are often times just genuinely better. Japan takes voice acting in anime very seriously, and the actors often give voice performances that wouldn't feel out of place in a live action film. The voices add to the impact, whereas a lot of dubs do the exact opposite and detract from the impact or make scenes less interesting or more goofy. This is exemplified pretty well when you get a good dub - like the Ghibli films often have. They hire legitimate actors who are actually talented at voicing characters, and the end result is a clearly passionate, well-made final product. Japan simply misses a lot less and takes the voice acting side of things a lot more seriously, resulting in subs sounding better in most cases.

The restrictions on the translation and lip sync is probably a pain to work around, so it's probably why they over emote or under-emote. @amandaslough1259 күн бұрын
If you were fluent in JP, you'd find the dubs to be just as cringey as EN dubs. That's why so many recent splice of life stories have the "you sound like a manga character" joke. Besides, there are plenty of cases where the dub, be it as a whole or for particular scenes, are carried harder in the dubs than subs.

Japan casts the same people in their dubs, so why is English dub any different? Zach is pretty great as tanjiro. Aleks Le is pretty great and hilarious as zenitsu as well, he has a great acting and vocal range compared to when he was in the Yuffie DLC of Final fantasy 7 "remake". I didn't know ciel from black butler was voice by a woman (Brina Palencia) back then. She has great vocal range playing as a 13 year old boy. And Daman Mills, the English voice actor for lyney from genshin impact. He also voices Blade from honkai star rail, vocals were EXCALLENT! I saw another comment saying English actors don’t try, and sure, some aren’t the best but there are a lot of VAs who put their hearts into it and I really appreciate that. Personally I prefer dubs just because sometimes I don’t get what part of a statement is being emphasized in Japanese so English helps me to better understand the characters point of view and the context of certain situations. To me it’s comparable to reading manga scans vs official translations. Sure it’s close and I’ll understand what’s going on, but once the official comes out it clarifies certain things. Like in one piece when zoro meets vegapunk. In the scans he says “I have something I need you to do” but in the official he says “we have demands” the statements are similar but the meaning behind them is so much different 🤣

@XultanisDragon3 ай бұрын
Its not only the training. If you listen carefully its all about money and how much the studio wants to pay. American cartoons like Justice league, awesome audio work and amazing voice work. When you go to anime eng dub, the sound quality isn't there and the voice acting sounds sub par like they aren't doing anything expressive in the booth just reading the sheet and thats it. The sound quality really doesn't sround right and the voice acting sounds like they are just standing inside the booth reading off a sheet like they aren't even moving their bodies to express what they are saying. Mark Hamill when asked to do Joker will move his hands and body to help excentuate his voice for the joker. Same with Japanese voice actors if you ever watch their public readings of their characters.

It’s actually 2 things: 1. American dub actors don’t generally have rich deep voices. It makes powerful “large” or wise characters feel cheap. Kurama is a good example. 2. English doesn’t translate well. People who speak English don’t really talk the way a Manga is read when translated. There are too many ways to say something. English is full of so much slang and unique phrases. So, I feel that actors are handcuffed trying to give some flavor while also staying close to the script. I feel that the best fix would be letting dub actors do their own thing. Stretch scenes to allow a sentence to finish and it’ll feel a lot better and less hokey. The only issue is that costs money. So! Idk. I would hope that they toss more money into English dub and find more VAs with deep manly voices. The guy who voiced Kratos (most recent games) would be nice. The bald guy from Whiplash. Sir Ian Mikellan. Actually for that matter how about bringing in more UK VAs. That would help fill in the holes and add something interesting. Any accents really would be nice.
@dewbs967 күн бұрын
I was wrong it’s 3 things. 3. Immersion. A big reason why Sub sounds/feels better is that you have no context as an non native speaker to hear the hokey dialogue. Instead you are engaged with the story simply going off of tonality to build the personality of the character that you are watching. When you listen in your native tongue, it sounds silly & that’s partly due to VA’s not being that good OR culturally “cartoons” aren’t taken as seriously in a dramatic format. Animation has usually been used for comedy or children’s entertainment.

@@CaliburovX4 Sometimes the english dub out does the Japanese dub. Examples like Street Fighter II TMP, Akira, Iria, Venus Wars, Dragonball Z, Cowboy Bebop, Gundam Wing, etc. Talent level is what's important imo. I don't care what language they speak. A movie like Chico and Rita is a great example of mixing languages. They speak English, Spanish, and Portuguese throughout that animated film. They also sing as well.
@CaliburovX43 ай бұрын
@@dct124 That's true, but I think it's much rarer that you realize. I noticed there are a lot of older titles you listed, so I'm assuming those may have been shows/movies you watched growing up, which is fine, but I think it's worth considering you may have rose colored glasses when looking back at some of those shows/movies. If I'm wrong, fair enough. I won't deny that in some cases, having a dub in your language can enhance the experience of certain media, but personally, I think experiencing something in it's native language, whatever it may be, allows us to have a deeper connection to it. Language is one of the major ways we communicate culture, and changing that inevitably causes something to be lost that I would rather keep. And now that it's come out that, in the US at least, translators, localizers, and dub script writers have drastically edited and changed dialogue to suit their political agenda to the point that it can actually change the story, I have lost all trust when it comes to these people, so there's also that. In any case, I prefer stuff to be in it's original language. There are exceptions, but that's all they are, exceptions.

@CaliburovX4 I can name a few modern anime with decent dubs. Goblin Slayer is one, the characters honestly sound exactly how you would expect them too if it were a western show. One of my favorite things about any animated project is looking up the cast to see if it's the actor I thought it was. But also, they keep getting cast because they're good at their jobs. Why would you hire someone new who may or may not have the chops you're looking for rather than hire someone you already know has what you're looking for? This is why its so hard to become a VA and why its important to start with smaller indie projects to create a portfolio so people can see what you can do. So to them, hiring you would be less of a gamble.
