A scintillating performance capped with a goal to break the deadlock at Nigeria '99 WYC.
Final Scores: Nigeria 1 - 1 Costa Rica
Julius Efosa Aghahowa (born 12 February 1982) is a Nigerian former professional footballer who played as a striker. He was known for his pace and his back-flips when he scored goals. Aghahowa became the first foreign national outside the former Soviet Union, who was among the best scorers in the Ukrainian Premier League 2000-01 season. Aghahowa played in Ukraine, England and Turkey during his career.

Aghahowa touches are reminiscent of Jay Jay. Nigeria was like Brazil in those days. How I wish I could turn back the clock and relive those moments. The Nigeria today is just dead. But that class of Nigerians at the 2000 Olympics was probably the last of the great generation. And then we fell off.

The money that should go into bringing back memories like this has gone to semi literate politicians robbing the country blind. That competition in 1999 was a brilliant one, the final between Spain v Switzerland marked the last match I saw in the Main Bowl after seeing great matches some with FIFA officials in attendance. First time in the main bowl of the stadium was in 1979, it was surreal. Privileged to have seen the likes of Humphrey Edobor, Austin Igbinabaro, Rashidi Yekini, Stephen Keshi, Stanley Okoronkwo, Edema Fuludu, Dimeji Lawal, John Ene Okon and many more. We had brilliant commentators in Yinka Craig, Sebastian Offurum, Fabio Lanipekun, Walter Oyatogun and the great oracle Ernest Okonkwo. Nigeria has not been fortunate to have good people in the saddle, a greater and better country it would have been.

Then the atmosphere in the neighbourhood was enough to know whether Nigeria was winning or loosing any match. We always looked forward to when the Super Eagles were playing be it friendly or in a tournament. Things are not so anymore, the passion to see the super Eagles play is not there. Then the atmosphere would be so moody if Nigeria lost or wild jubilation if we won any game, children saw super Eagles players as their role models especially Jay Jay and Kanu, but not anymore these days.

Hmm!!! This was the first match of the U-20 world youth championship in Nigeria 99. The first match was played between Nigeria and Costa-Rica. The players started with a very furious beginning, because all that they needed was nothing but a goal, and in the 27th minute, Julius Aghahowa scored the opening goal for the Flying Eagles and the tournament. As he scored, he did it to satisfy his teammates, and also wrote his name in, the history of football in Nigeria introduced himself to the Nigerian football fans. What a match!

Only old Bendel State and today’s Edo State players brought passion into the national team. Todays super eagles made up of Igbos and yorubas are just busy fighting tribal wars on the pitch! Asking Igbo players to go out there and died for Nigeria is likely asking the camel to go through the eye of a needle.😢

I disagree with you. Whatever part of the country they're from, Nigerians always give their best for the team. Many Igbo players play their hearts out when representing the national team and so do many others. You try to bring up tribal divide and then label Yoruba and Igbo. Let's just enjoy the video and reminisce about the good ol' days without trying to focus on what divides us even when celebrating what unites us
