In many places, despite learning the same language, the accents of the spoken language may still be different. But Malaysians have this weird talent where they can instantly pick up the same accent as the person they are talking with and most of the time the locals won’t even notice! I personally feel proud of this talent myself, but I remember reading a comment somewhere saying that they hate Malaysians because they think we are just showing off/imitating and it’s annoying. I was very upset when reading this because that’s not the reason why we switch accents. It’s just a natural instinct to us and most of the time we don’t even notice our accents have changed! But on the bright side, I saw some replies on the comment defending us saying that they felt very welcome and at ease instead when we Malaysians do that, especially to those who are far away from home and have to face unfamiliar surroundings and deal with problems alone. The accents made them feel like they were still at home and it calms them down a lot.

There's something about the Malay people's tongue where we ourselves don't have that strong of an accent while speaking in our language so we are somehow able to pickup a foreign accent easily. I mean, we can even fake an accent.
