Solar sang for a musical that has great high notes and that's the style she's been using ever since. Wheein just has a different singing style than Solar, and while she can reach it, I guess Solar wanted to perform a song with less high notes, but she still managed to perform great!

Solar sings chest to mixed voice and her head voice is weaker, naturally having mid range but STRONG belts. Wheein sings mixed to head voice with weaker chest voice, with her range as high as the whistle notes. Wheein's chest voice isn't as strong as Solar's. They are both good singers doing different things. Hwasa is somewhere in between with great vocal colour and flair. Moonbyul can only do chest to mixed with very limited head voice capabilities, thus having the lowest range, but her low notes are LOW, adding base to the sound :) GREAT balance as a group

wheein's vocals were always the most well-rounded in mamamoo. i'm pretty sure she has the widest range out of all of them, and her style is pretty hard to replicate.

Yea but they have their strengths and weaknesses. If you see their "I miss you" in the dingo performance, Wheein struggles with the runs on the notes while belting in the last chorus while Solar does it effortlessly. They're both great vocalists. I'm sure if we were to see Wheein covering a song with Solar belting, then we would have seen her struggle with the belts. Luckily, she was covering "Honey," which is in her range

@@animecookies8784 your point is actually very much valid that both of them have different fortes but I wouldn't say WheeIn was "struggling" to hit the high note in I Miss You, like making a scrunching face in a ballad doesn't mean you're struggling. WheeIn has done countless powerful belts (like in Anymore, Goodbye, Da Ra Da, Narcissus, etc) it's just that there's been quite a change in her singing preferences itself.

Sameee. But the solo stages at their concert really reminded me that they're all established solo artists who love Mamamoo just as much. To me, that solo stage was not Mamamoo performing, it was Solar, Moonbyul, Wheein and Hwasa performing together. Whether they disband or not, I genuinely believe they'll still collaborate together as solo artists.. but thats just my wish.. hopefully they won't disband. 😭😭

this is the difference between wheein and solar and why i think this should be the reason ppl need to stop saying one particular member as a main vocalist. Solar is more outburst with her singing, she can do powerful high notes but lacks details (you can see it in this videos), she has difficulties nailing the little runs that wheein can do. Wheein on the other hand, she's amazing with details and technique, but for some reason she's maybe a bit self concious with doing powerful high notes, so that bit often goes to solar, hence why ppl always seem to think that solar is the main vocalist, even though high notes are not all there is about singing

From what I see, people usually say that they are both main vocalists and are pretty much on the same tier. They both have strengths where the other has weaknesses. Solar can do runs just fine. Not as well as Wheein. But Wheein probably has one of the best mix and falsettos in kpop. Whereas Solar's belts are unrivalled and strangely enough, healthy for the most part. Solar is efficient in her mix and falsettos as she showed in honey. It's just not her go to. And Wheein seems to lack the forward outbursts and power in her belts. They are very interesting vocalists to analyse. Moonbyul and Hwasa are no different

It’s not that she lacks “details” her voice and wheeins voice are completely different. Wheein has what you’d call a mutable vocal range. In other words extremely flexible vocal cords, so she can dip her toe in many directions. Where as solar whose voice is very powerful to the point she has to hold the mic at a distance, it would be hard for her to easily hit wheein undefinable vocal range. Main vocal is a Industry thing, everyone knows by now that mamamoo is a group of 4 solo artists that are very very different. They don’t even consider themselves “main” anything because each one of them can do it all. 🎉

They're individually great singers but wheein has specialty mixed voices which is the best in the group meanwhile solar is a powerhouse when it comes to chest voice and belting. Hwasa is consistent in both and can do it pretty well. Moonbyul however good at chest voice and not really has a great mixed voice. That's why i think putting them all in a group is just *chef kiss

I love how this video shows that there is no true best singer of all time, or in one generation of music, or one genre, etc. Solar is an extremely talented vocalist, definitely ONE of the best in her generation of singers, but there is still stuff that Wheein can do and that Hwasa can do with their voices that Solar cannot, and it's the same way with Wheein compared to Hwasa and Solar, or Hwasa compared to Solar and Wheein. Even if you view somebody as the #1 greatest, no artist can conquer every field or every style or every technique, and that's okay. Solar not being able to achieve Wheein's high notes in this clip doesn't remove any of Solar's other talents and it doesn't decrease her value as a professional singer, it just shows the difference between how the two women approach their singing style. It's still a lot of fun to try out new things as a vocalist though, and it is also a good learning opportunity.

Solar is a belter and her head voice is her weak points while Wheein is the opposite but both can reach high notes in different technique. I remember when they try to pick an AOA song (AOA’s songs are mostly very high mixed to head) the 3 of them are having a hard time and complaining and I know that it won’t be a problem for Wheein.

That one particular section is a fast & fairly complex melisma, Wheein has the most agile voice in the group thanks to her mixed voice being the least chesty & pushy. Solar on the other hand has a rather chesty mixed voice with pushed resonance, so these melismatic sections can be challenging for me. You can see that Solar simplifies that vocal run section into a straight note belt, which is a smart decision to deliver a solid vocal performance. Another great example is the falsetto riffs in the choruses of their new title track Illella. Wheein delivers a more “complete” melodic riff (7 notes) while Solar simplifies the riff into 5 notes instead for sake of cleanliness.

100% Wheein, but she doesn't/is afraid of fucking them high notes up so she prolly lets Solar handle them. Also, solar is much better at holding high notes while Wheein's vocal agility in higher registers is way more developed; hence, solar struggling in this video.

Solar literally improved her vocals ever since playing a LEAD ROLE for her musical debut, so kinda strange how some still think about the _"more power, little technique"_ Solar. But yeah, Wheein has the airy, honey vocals. Solar's got that powerful and in-your-face vocals. Hwasa has seductive and jazzy vocals. Byul's got a melancholic tone that really fits OSTs.
