The problem is size mantis are adapted to handle prey their size and smaller well. In many of the mantis loses they are facing spider and other larger predators. When they win they are facing smaller predators or equal size herbivores that lack the venom of spiders or the like. Katydid sure is same “size” but much larger and heavier than the mantis.

I kinda get the impression that mantis' can really only kill things that are weaker than them. They don't have any venom or anything so they're heavily reliant on being able to grab and keep hold of their prey.

I couldn't care less for the added sound effects. The director & sound editor have under-esteemed the value of original sound. The actual sounds these bugs make pouncing, striking, & eating is plenty sufficient... Life is really really good though, when all I can complain about are corny artificial sounds. Accolades to the photographers who must camp out, monitor, & track these bugs for hours & days at a time for just a few minutes of film footage. Terrific series, nonetheless... This is the very best macro-photography ever. Gratifying to see Bill Kurtis reach outside of journalism & take to becoming a narrator, too. Hope he continues to narrate by working for more documentaries in the future :D

Here for the always excellent commentary by Dr. Fry and Dr. Rayor, the sound effects, narration and actual bugs in this over a decade old show is just a bonus. But damn is yt greedy with the copious junkfood and other garbage ads, twice as many vs when it was on actually on tv.

Someone's math isn't adding up. First the lichen spider travels 60 body lengths per second and the dude says it's equivalent to 250+ mph if it was a human running. Then the lady says the beetle running 50 body lengths per second is equivalent to a human running 400+ mph. Even though the lichen spider was much larger than the beetle.

Insects don’t make sounds like Jurassic park dinosaurs but honestly it’s more interesting with all the action

Also, the predatory Katydid deserves a win. Crickets and Katydids get bodies by everyone.
