This is not a theory but proven fact. The Leafs did the same thing with Inge Hammarstrom years ago, but he only got 480 goals in his first 8 games. They chased him out of the league too, but that was Clarence Campbell and John Ziegler.

Marcel Aubut is a die hard separatist. He wants to separate the province of Quebec from Canada and make it its own country. Notice that I wrote that in the present tense because he is alive and he has not changed. I don't know if Lindros' mother heard him say something foul about her in French or if she heard him talk ill or say a slur about anglophones, but it is true that Eric refused to play for Quebec because of Marcel Aubut the man and nothing else. The first time that the Nordiques management met with the Lindros family, they told them that they would pick Eric. I don't know if it is in that conversation that Eric's mother heard Aubut say something in French or if it was before that, but regardless.. they told the Nordiques that Eric wasn't going to play for them. That was obviously before he got drafted and it was in a room with a bunch of people. I seriously doubt that they wanted any drama at all, or they would have told everyone in that room why exactly Eric wasn't going to play for Quebec. I don't think Aubut knew exactly why Eric wasn't going to play for the Nordiques for a while, but maybe he did. Either way, it was the smart move to pick him because of his potential and value. I think Aubut really believed that the Lindros clan was cherry picking, so he decided to enter negotiations with them until they came out and told him in person when nobody else was there but Aubut that Eric wasn't going to play for Aubut's team no matter what. That's when it struck a nerve on Aubut's neck. So a year after he was drafted, Eric was traded and you would think that this was the end of it, but it wasn't. Marcel had powerful politician friends who in turn had connections with highly influential media. With the help of sports media, they propagated lies about Eric for years and turned francophones against him by causing this divide between francophones and anglophones. They spread lies that Eric was moma's baby, that they didn't want him to play for Quebec because it was a bad team at the bottom of the standings, that it was a bad market, that he was going to be such a good player that he deserved the privilege to play for the team of his choice, that he was childish, and that he didn't like French speaking people. They made francophones believe that Eric was an anti-francophone for the sole purpose of getting these people to vote YES in the referendum to separate the province of Quebec from Canada that they were already planning which came to be in 1995. In 1995, if you asked 9 years old francophone hockey fans who were their favorite team and who was their most hated player, the answer would have been 99% of the time, the Quebec Nordiques and Eric Lindros. In 1994-1995, my coach asked my team who was their favorite team and player. So you've got 16 kids who were asked the same questions. Whoever answered first, then the rest followed, and while the majority (11 kids out of 16) all of whom were primarily francophones acknowledged the Quebec Nordiques as their favorite team and Sakic or Forsberg as their favorite players (to be fair the Nordiques were strong at that time as they were something like 16-0), 3 kids threw in there the Montreal Canadiens and Patrick Roy and Mario Lemieux as their favorite player. The 2 others kids who oddly spoke English better than the rest of the team hadn't answered or acknowledge anything yet until they got the attention of the group when they were finally asked by the coach. I told them Pittsburgh was my favorite team, and my favorite player was Jagr, then a friend of mine who played defense shyly responded the Boston Bruins, Ray Bourque as his favorite defenseman and Eric Lindros his favorite forward. That's when all the team acknowledge that they liked Ray Bourque but they hated Eric Lindros the most because he didn't like Quebecois people. The coach likely diffused the situation with more questions because I remember the next question was who did we think would win the Stanley Cup. ANYWAY It marked me because at the time I also used to hate Lindros but for different reasons but it was not really hate, it was more like fear. I considered Lindros as Jagr's rival and a threat to what I wanted Jagr to be/become; the best player in the world, and since I had another friend who's favorite player and team was Lindros and the Flyers, it was natural for me to see a competition there. Oddly enough, they ended with the same amount of the points that season, so it's like it was fate, one of them was to become the best player in the world some day, and I happy that it came to be Jagr later in the late 90s and early 2000s. He won his first Art Ross in 1994-95. I was rejoiced to learn the good news because in my little mind I thought he lost when I looked in the newspaper the stats because he had the same amount of points and I thought the amounts of GP would be the next factor, but it was the amount of goals. It was probably the "best" day of my life when I learned that but today I can admit that I am glad Jagr won but I think Lindros was robbed because of a bad rule. Since they added the Maurice Richard trophy around 1999, I sure hope they changed the rules for the Art Ross and award it to the player with the least games played when two players are tied with the same amount of points. In case of another tie, then yeah sure, the goals can be the 2nd tie breaker. I started to fear the Nordiques and see them as rivals to the Pens because they were scary so I rooted for the '94 SC champs the Rangers in the playoffs of 1995. I was happy NYR beat QUE in 6 back then, but now I regret that it happened because it was the last time the Nordiques were in Quebec. Believe it or not, if Marcel Aubut really loved the Nordiques, they would have been a priority and he would have resisted offers and waited a few seasons to see what happens now that the Nordiques are good, but he decided to move the team in May of 1995 simply to give his higher priority (the Quebec separation from Canada) more chances of success. The referendum was held in Oct of 1995. It is what it is but for some people it will always be political and sometimes it hurts hockey. When I learned that Lindros was married to a Quebecoise and that it had nothing to do with everything they said about him, he earned my respect even more. I don't know anyone who would have been capable of staying away from feeding gasoline to the flame of drama like he did. I understand though that there's not many options to go with it when you're "enemies" are rich and powerful. The dude just want to play in the NHL and just doesn't want to play for that asshole Aubut, he doesn't mean any ill but it is his personal choice and it's not because he thinks he's above everyone like Aubut said, it's because he does not respect Aubut and will not play for a man like him but he doesn't want to cause more drama than it already is so he's not doing anything about it because even if he did, what is the Lindros going to do in court vs Aubut and his powerful friends? Nothing! I didn't like the Flyers but then again there was no team I really liked except the Pens, and Detroit in the Western Conference. Naturally, I rooted for DET over COL and I even preferred the DAL Stars over COL in the West. In 1996, I was pissed that FLA beat PIT but I was rooting for FLA over COL. In 1997 and 1998 I rooted DET over PHI and WAS. I kind of liked WAS because of Bondra, Gonchar and Jim Carrey but I still rooted for DET because Fedorov and Yzerman at the time were both in my top 10 favorite players. Jagr, Kariya, Forsberg, Mogilny, Fedorov, Yzerman, Lemieux, Selanne, Bure, Sakic, Lindros.

Yep. I think it's better for the league overall, the players, and the teams involved for players to have more say in where they play. If your organization is such a shitshow that players would rather play 4 years of NCAA or take you to court rather than play for you, maybe the problem isn't the player.

Flyers handled it well. SanFillipo created the shitstorm blaming it on Hayes and mouthbreathers ran with it. Flyers had every right to rip Gauthier tho. They waited until after the deal was done and kept it under wraps for months.
