Hello there. I’m in chronic intractable pain as well. I tried almost every pain med. OxyContin and oxycodone worked BEST for me for years until my dr decided to put me on other stuff. He would not put me on OxyContin so he put me on fentanyl! I was so upset! I absolutely did not want fentanyl. I was on it for a few months. My pain was somewhat controlled. Well, last year, I decided to get off that med because it just seemed like there was always some kind of issue. So a year ago in May, I went to a dr that prescribes suboxone. My pain is more manageable now with subs, Gabapentin, turmeric and ibuprofen! I have more energy and my mood is more stable. I am very happy that God directed me in that path. May God directed you in a path that you desire. ✝️🙏🏼

Yes. I will no longer be on Nucynta - a pain medication that does not give you the opioid high - after July because the cost tripled since January and I can’t afford it anymore. Now I will be either in pain because the dosage of traditional morphine is going to be reduced because we obviously can’t prescribe the same amount of pain relief because some addicts abuse them OR I won’t be able to actively participate in my own life anymore because I will be loopy from the pain meds. So due to money and other people abusing drugs I will be in pain or high. Thanks American healthcare.

Some may see this as overkill, but I believe it’s past time for actual laws to be enacted. Doctors have to be held accountable for the pain they’re allowing their patients to experience . It truly is a crime to have the ability to alleviate suffering , but do nothing. It’s true , some people will abuse the medications. But, the vast majority will not. I wish that it could be made a criminal offense, to not give these needed medications.

That's problem in the first place. I've spoke with many drs and they all want to help, their hands are tied. The problem is that government needs to stay out of medicine! It is what's started this whole mess. And yes there will always be drs that treat some people better than others. POC and women in particular are alot more likely to be underprescribed than men. There will always be drs who think those with chronic pain shouldn't have pain meds or reduce pain meds and there will always be judgy drs. But there are so many more that do care, and want to do more for their patients. I've seen both sides in the last 30 or so years. But putting laws in place isn't the answer. Because we are where we are because of that to begin with.

We get treated like drug seekers, no matter what! I woke up from double glute repair (severly torn minimus & medius) & Bursectomy. Severely painful. They handed me 1 tablet. I asked what it was and was told 5mg. Percocet. I responded, "Are you kidding me?" After a half hour they gave me another. I was in a hip brace and they wanted me up and off that table & out the door. When I tried to sit up and my entire right hip & upper leg started cramping and jerking. So painful! When the F bomb started flying out of my mouth, they gave me an injection of Demerol. It was traumatic. I've had other surgeries (shoulder, knee injuries, other reconstruction) and have never been allowed to wake up in that much pain. Then he was super stingy about the take home pain meds. I get nauseated even thinking about surgery now.

Used to be a big advocate group. They are the ones that got the face scale on hospital boards. Partners Against Pain. They used to advocate for pain patients. They said the enforce computer will give out info to just about anyone in any kind of medical job, ones that should not even have access, and that it didn't make it easier for real patients to get their meds like it was set up to, and stop Dr shopping which it did that. But only dealers could buy the damn pills, my late husband used to pay $125 now had to fork out over a thousand overnight. It made it worse, it's total chaos. Why you think so many people went to heroin? It was cheaper and stronger than what the could get if they could get anything at all. Then they started mixing it with fentanyl and honestly I think heroin actually worked better for pain, less people died that's another. They need to just treat the people and as long as it's not Dr shopping, without fear. If someone is addicted or becomes my heart goes out to them, but people are suffering who did nothing wrong, it's disgraceful. Pain meds is the only way some can get back their lives but addicts are more entitled to get back theirs for some reason, It's trueky mind bigoling

Same here in Canada. Watched an addict get pain meds in the ER while I was ignored for hours when I'd just had my gallbladder out and developed a hernia. It was less than 48 hours post surgery and the surgeon had gone on vacation right after my procedure so I was instructed to go to the ER if any issues. 4.5 hours I sat there in the secondary waiting area. No water, nothing with fresh surgery wounds and and obvious hernia. But the tests they did do which I had to crawl to as they just told me where to go and I could barely walk showed nothing. Sat more then finally just got up to leave. They came over and I demanded a refill on my pain meds as I was given 36 hours of pain medication and booked in with family doctor who ordered THE SAME tests which then showed the hernia. I have not once in my life ever had an addiction issue of any kind. Ever. I don't do weird drugs- no thank you. But I will never ever forget how awful I was treated and how much agony i was in. But they filled a scabby weaker pain script no problem. In and out of ER in 30 minutes while they told an elderly woman that her issue was all in her head and I had to listen to her cry in pain and frustration.

When I had my hysterectomy I was given Tylenol, tramadol and OxyContin for pain. The OxyContin was just in case neither of the others worked for me. My nephew’s girlfriend also had a hysterectomy along with an endometriosis clean out, appendectomy and a unilateral oophorectomy. She was only given tramadol. Hysterectomies are painful. I myself had no surgery pain but that either because I have an insanely high pain tolerance or I was just so relieved to have the beast gone that I didn’t notice any pain. My surgery was nowhere near as extensive as hers was. And she had to have more organs removed than I did. Including one that’s kind of key to your digestive system. Make it make sense.

Its not like im going to od cause i was on methadone at the time or divert them cause i needed them. I ended up calling an ambulance like 11pm. I could barely move at this point. Thankfully my doc saw how much pain i was in cause there was no way you could fake that. Anyways they gave my a lot of dilauded and it wasnt doing much and they ended up transferring me to a bigger hospital where i was put on a pump. They tried not dosing me with methadone to see if thar would help but by the time i got to the bigger hospital i was in withdrawals and i didnt even notice. My sweet sweet nurse noticed and dosed me so i can drink the contrast shake for my ct scan. I will never forget her. Then husband had vasectomy (which failed) and they gave him more Percocet than I ever had with my surgery. Third C-section I got the Percocet and then hydrocodone after the prescription ran out. Yes, I needed more pain medicine, so they could only prescribe hydrocodone over the phone to the pharmacy. My husband hardly took any of the Percocet after his vasectomy. I learned that I can take a Tylenol (500mg) and 3 ibuprofen (200 mg) for pain after I had a tooth pulled that went terribly awful. Fused root.. It did help much better than relying on one or the other however an actual pain medication would've been appreciated and appropriate. They wouldn't give me a prescription. No drug abuse in my history and still couldn't get a script. Didn't even fill pain meds after giving birth yet I couldn't get one for this.

It's true. I am traumatized after having my impacted wisdom tooth taken out awake ,no type of sedation( I wanted to go under because of anxiety from past experience, but it needed taken out asap-not 8 months away- so I had to compromise). It's why I don't want to go back to the dentist, even though it was a baby doctor in an oral surgery office that took it out. The shots numbed it, but it really messed me up mentally. At one point he was like 'is that bone or a nerve?' to the nurse ,and that alone was scary ... I dissociated to get through that. It was extremely painful for about a week. They just gave me naproxen. I don't see the issue with prescribing a small amount of stronger pain meds ,as needed, for such things. I had an ER doctor prescribe just enough for a few days with antibiotics when I had to go there, before it was taken out, because I had a nasty infection. She's actually the one who chewed them out for not responding to me(they hung up on her at first) and made them get me in to get it removed ASAP. I was not about to go to the ER again,so I just suffered. I didn't want to go through the insurance person coming up to me when I'm praying, eyes closed, for the wait to go by fast. The ER is not a place for issues with teeth, but I had no choice. It really was an emergency. I could not leave until my blood pressure went down, and that was a bit after I got pain relief.

Had a hardware removal for my l4/l5 and was told in the hospital after surgery all I could have for pain was my pain medication from my regular pain dr for my regular daily chronic pain... The pain that was still there when taking the meds...um... hello... definitely hurt even more after surgery.... safe to say... my daily meds did not touch this pain at all. It was horrendous. Not to mention when they woke me from anesthesia after surgery... I was in so much pain that I couldn't even open my eyes or talk. I cried and felt the tears roll down my face, then heard whoever was trying to wake me call the anesthesiologist back.... then, next thing I know, I could at least function enough not to cry, and I could open my eyes and talk. I don't think I've ever been in that much pain and I've had a normal birth where baby came before meds could be given and I've had an emergency c section due to extreme hellp syndrome (severe pre eclampsia) and both of those hurt pretty darn bad.... but being woke up from the hardware removal, that first time was the most pain I've ever had. I've been in chronic pain now for about 30 years, and I'm almost 46 now smh.... America needs to do better. I've now learned from experience....glp 1 meds actually help my pain and inflammation caused by my autoimmune diseases but I can no longer get them because I'm not type 2 diabetic and I'm not wealthy.... insurance won't cover it, and it makes it very difficult to decide to wake up every single day and continue to live this miserable, painful life I live.... knowing....I don't have to hurt this much or feel this bad.... if I were wealthy.

Another problem is many of us who deal with chronic pain know exactly which pain meds that work and which do not. Me, Morphine is like taking a tic tac, the first few minutes after dosing it is completely gone. For some reason my body metabolizes it very fast. Now, Dilaudid works for a few hours. When I tell a new doctor in the ER this they look at me like a cow looking at a new gate. When you've dealt with chronic pain for decades....you learn, very quickly.

I had two cataract surgeries. On the first one I had an anesthesiologist who told me I would be totally awake but feel nothing. I would only see two orange square lights in my field of vision. Yep pretty much true. On my second surgery I had a different anesthesiologist who said they didn't like over medicating and would give just enough for the surgery. Well I could see all sorts of instruments being shoved in my eye. I felt every cut, suction, needle, everything done to my eye, especially when the doctor shoved the artificial lens under my cornea. Weird thing was I couldn't respond to tell them of the pain.

So true. I was in a bad car crash which shattered my left and right wing along w/ neck damage and for a few months doctors acted like they cared, then it became “why arent you healed completely; how can you have chronic pain. Im cutting you off because you’re a drug seeker!”. Id then be like “i seek drugs because i cant wish off pain, id like my pain to just be a 3-4 at times so i can enjoy life as a 30yr old; i can tolerate those numbers but i cant do anything when im at an 8.”. I found that pain management’s goal is to make sure you are always in pain, there is no management of it from any i saw. “I didnt ask to have pain for life, but thanks CNP and doctors i saw.”

I've never had a drug problem or even prescribed pain meds except after wrist surgery and cancer surgery. Even old people are left to suffer in pain.

This was one of my biggest fears I had when I needed prescription narcotics. I developed numerous problems that kept me in constant pain. Acute Compartment Syndrome. Neuropathy. compressed vertebrae, numerous other problem and then a high broken humerus . I take zero anticholinergics. I was so afraid of looking like a seeker. Then I developed Tricuspid Value problem,so my meds became more limited etc. I know that one day pain meds will stop helping. So I do relaxation methods, music, cold and heat therapy. I see a pain specialist so I can stay on top of the pain. I do feel abusers have affected the type of care I received because of physicians having to watch out for people that abuse and that physicians have to protect chronic pain patients safe from ourselves as well.

The doctors wouldn't maintain my 80 year old grandma's pain medication prescription because of the opioid epidemic. She had scoliosis, kyphosis, and osteoporosis. Her ribs were touching her hips in x-rays. In the last 3 years of her life, she broke her femur, the opposite hip, and a toe that had to be amputated. She also had COPD and congestive heart failure from 60 years of smoking. My mom is 66. She has spinal stenosis in her neck and lumbar vertebrae. She isn't allowed to have opioid pain meds either. When I was 30, I had major lung surgery to remove a cancerous tumor from my right main stem bronchial tube. They went in through my back, under my shoulder blade, and removed 3 inches of my 5th rib, cutting through all that muscle, nerve, and bone. They gave me opioids for the first 2 weeks of recovery, then refused to give me more during my 3 month long recovery. The scar from the incision is over a foot long, running between my spine and shoulder blade, wrapping around my shoulder blade to the side of my ribs.

I told them they make me v*mit violently but they said if I wasn't straight up allergic I had to take one. And of course it performed as expected. They were annoyed with me, as if I did it on purpose. I was allowed to leave without taking more, but they still wanted me to have the drugs so I got a perscription for more to take with me. They were rude to me about asking not to have any. If I had gone in there asking to go home with pain meds they'd have flagged my chart as drug seeking. You are not kidding patients that need them when I've had third degree burns, broken legs and other injuries. I have refuse pain medication. However, this year from August 2023 to now my mother shot and killed. My father tried to kill me and then my wife died in March after 20 years of marriage. It's been rough. And yeah I've drank a little bit but because I was honest about that in the ER because I've never had a problem. They refused to give me pain medication. We have broken four ribs, shattered my eye socket. Aunt cracked, her had a hairline fracture in my jaw and they refused to give me pain medication for 5 days. Tell me how that is okay Aunt. All that happened because of my blood pressure it showed up and I had a seizure at work. Still didn't go to the hospital until 3 weeks later when I couldn't breathe because I got hit in the lungs when I got robbed or hitting the ribs when I got robbed and I had four broken ribs and they refused to give me pain medication. How is that okay saying I'm some alcoholic because after 3 months I've been drinking because I just lost my wife and my family fell apart but I've always refused to pay medication anytime I've been in the hospital or in an emergency situation. I was in law enforcement for 15 years. I'm not a drug addict and also my talk screen came back not alcohol in my system. Not any drugs whatsoever at all. The nurses went off on the doctors. I could hear them screaming down the hall so tell me how it's right. America is just screwed up and just wants to keep the druggies on drugs and they're just cover their asses as far as they don't want to lose their license but they don't want to do their job either. That first week at home was so much pain and agony and i ended up taking the oxycodone and going to the DR with a medication rash. They then gave me 2 pills of Dilaudid to help me get some sleep.. a week later, and then gaslit me for any pain after that. I really hate what this has become.
