It feels like an odd time to bring back “When Phones Were Fun.”
After all, 2020 has been one of the most interesting years in mobile tech history: Motorola finally achieved a proper reboot of its iconic RAZR; Samsung built the best foldable ever with its Galaxy Z Fold 2; and even LG got in on the fun with a radical rehash of its VX9400, the LG Wing. As I said in my review of the latter: "phones are indeed fun again!"
But something tells me that, whatever social feeds might exist thirteen years from now, not many of those phones will inspire the kind of love-fest that 2007's Nokia N95 does. With a bevy of firsts encapsulated within an iconic dual-slider design, the Nokia N95 wasn’t just the ultimate smartphone ... it was also, in many ways, the last of its kind.
Join me for a look back at the Nokia N95-3, and stay tuned to the end of the video for an exclusive look at HMD Global's Nokia N95 reboot ... that never was! MrMobile's "When Phones Were Fun" is back in business.

[ABOUT WHEN PHONES WERE FUN - NOKIA N95]
This is the ninth in a series of MrMobile videos exploring the mobile tech world's most vibrant period in design and experimentation. In “When Phones Were Fun,” Michael Fisher re-reviews cellphones from the golden age of mobile, the decade-long span from the turn of the century to approximately 2009.
When Phones Were Fun: Episode 9 features a Nokia N95-3 retail unit on loan from Ricky Cadden and a (non-functional) prototype N95 reboot reference unit on loan from HMD Global. No company paid a fee or otherwise offered compensation in exchange for this coverage, nor did any company preview or approve this content before publication.

The N95 (or in my particular case: The N95 8GB) will always remain my favorite smartphone of all time. I was 19 years old when it came out, and on the day of its release here in Austria, it cost a whopping 799€! I decided to buy it anyway, and even though the rest of the month was pretty much me eating nothing but plain noodles and rice 😅, I never regretted buying it. Unfortunately, I sold my original device a few years ago, but I managed to get a hold of a very cheap, used one in decent condition. As a collector of vintage phones, this device will always hold a special place in my heart.

They had a love factor.. surely today's phone are prettier but in mid 2000s it was rare to see people with same phone.. nokia just had a bonkers catalogue, moto was there, samsung , ericsson. I think it's usable indeed, for music, email, calling and texting (SMS or open standards like IRC/XMPP) it's well, but also very much so for camera. The camera is still brilliant even today, it takes great shots. Remember 5 megapixels is basically like a still of 1080p+ video, it's much better quality than we'd think judging by that number. And it's not just about megapixels, the flash and (slow) focus on this thing works great, and the sensor they designed was great. It's just super chunky for 2020 (or even 2010!).

Had one in 2008, it took a Galaxy S4 for me to leave it behind in 2013. 5 years. 5 frigging years with the thing and it was still kicking, I switched purely because the 3.5mm jack was, well, not working anymore and it's BT antenna was so fucked it barely had 1.5m of range anymore for my headphones at the time. I doubt any phone I get today will get the same mileage or arrive as intact as the N95 did at its 5 years mark. It was, indeed, the pinnacle of the pre-glass-slab era of smartphones, and I miss it (prolly nostalgia but still).

Military Anecdote: Way back between 2007 and 2008, this phone formed part of an urban surveillance kit (i.e., surveillance in a city environment) at the time I was deployed with a small team for a year. Well, for some reason, the logistics personnel felt fit to include the Spider-Man DVD as part of the itemized kit supply list. So, for a couple of years, every time one of our teams took over the surveillance mission from a previous team, it had to account for the Spider-Man movie. Go figure.

When we bought phones, they were revolutionary and not evolutionary. We got game changing features like cameras that went from fuzzy to HD, going from photos to videos, GPS, exciting phone designs and UI, massive upgrades in processing and a new culture to embrace. Plus we went out and interacted with them at displays. Now just minor upgrades, phone purchases online and not knowing how it feels until it arrives, and massive prices for unproven features.
