I wanted to do this video precisely because no one was asking for it - and I think that's kind of sad. Because the Palm Centro was part of a legacy that laid so much of the foundation for what became the modern smartphone … and at the same time, it was also the last of its kind.
We’ve talked about the Palm brand on this series before: PalmOS powered that Samsung SPH-i500 flip smartphone from 2003. And yes, someday we will talk about the company’s most tragically celebrated trailblazer, 2009’s ill-fated Palm Pre - a device so epic in ambition that its influence is still felt today.But in order to turn that corner, Palm needed to maintain market share (and, you know, money). So in 2007, it crammed its popular Treo smartphone into a much smaller casing, called it the Centro, and sold it for $99 on contract.
The result was a phone that sold a million units in less than half a year … and served as my final college smartphone just when I was trying to turn a corner of my own.

[ABOUT WHEN PHONES WERE FUN - PALM CENTRO]
This is the fifteenth in a series of MrMobile videos exploring the mobile tech world's most vibrant period in design and experimentation. In “When Phones Were Fun,” Michael Fisher re-reviews cellphones from the golden age of mobile, the decade-long span from the turn of the century to approximately 2009.
When Phones Were Fun: Episode 15 features an AT&T-branded Palm Centro purchased by MrMobile / Future plc. Filmed on location in MrMobile’s college town of Norfolk, VA, both on and off the campus of Old Dominion University. No company paid a fee or otherwise offered compensation in exchange for this coverage (nor did it preview or approve this content before publication).

@@voidanderson202 that's a curveball right there. I guess I'd still go with Phones Were Fun just for the fact that MKBHD doesn't really have nostalgia for the tech on retro tech, and Michael does. Still, that new season of retro tech is killer!!

I know right, there is something more special in the first smartphones, they were so exciting and really had much of a progress while now is all just numbers while users can't really feel the difference while using them. I even remember old Nokia phones taking better photos than modern Samsung phones for example

For a few years in middle and high school I had a phase of getting older phones that we’re obsolete and every year I would get and older smartphone than the last. This was the last smartphone I was allowed to get until I was forced to get a modern phone because my parents didn’t understand it haha. I used to write entire essays on that phone with Documents To Go
@JoshLightWork
@JoshLightWork 3 жыл бұрын
oh my goodness Documents To Go! YES! that software was INSANELY awesome. the only downside was no third party fonts. OfficeSuite had that but the interface was nowhere near as good. I have so many fond memories of D2G and how amazing a software it was. if only I'd reached out to DataViz sooner and asked for fonts, maybe that nearly flawless software could've been made truly perfect.

When I was in 7th grade, my teacher recently purchased a Palm Pre. Having an interest in this new device, I asked her if that was the new Palm. She said yes and would always talk about how much she loved it. She would spend so much time on it and would frequently give us group assignments so she can be at her desk on her Palm. She was on it as much as people use their smartphones in today's world, which back then, was hardly ever seen. One day after class, I had asked if she can show me some of the features on it. Having recently given up on the HTC G1, the Palm Pre was much more polished than early android was. I was extremely envious every time I went to her class and watched her enjoy hours on that device. I've never owned a Palm device, but I wish I had.

As a Palm enthusiast who was a diehard Treo loyalist this spoke to me in so many different ways. Oh, and the fact that it was recorded right up the street at ODU (I'm in VaBeach) was the icing on the cake. Can't wait to relive the glory days of the Pre (here's to hoping it includes a touchstone, because inductive charging is just one more thing Palm never gets credit for)

Stumbled upon this channel a few days ago and have been peeling back the onion, slowly but surely. Did a search for 'Palm' and was pleased to see this vid. I worked at Palm in that short but epic timeframe of both their rise and fall - I was on the Treo team there from 2004 to 2009. I was part of the team that worked with Verizon to try to get them to put more resources and energy into their Treo offering (and Centro, however briefly that thing lived within the red and black environs). Obviously Sprint was behind Palm to a level the other carriers wouldn't match, but overall it was a blast to be there then and yes so many folks at Palm went on to Apple, as has been discussed over and over. Great channel and great video!

This video brings back so many memories when I was 18 I was with sprint at the time and wanted to upgrade my phone so I went to my local Radio Shack at the time with my girlfriend at the time and after an hour in the store had decided on the Katana DLX only for the salesman to inform me they didn't have anymore in stock and couldn't sell me the display model. They then walked me over to this little gem and showed me everything it could do and pointed out how better it was then the Katana. I was very skeptical but took the leap and bought it leaving the store a little disappointed but still open to what the Centro could do for me and after a a couple days I was hooked. I found myself using it for almost every feature it offered. This phone was amazing for its time and tho it didn't look like much it definitely blew me away.

This segment of "When Phones were fun", is one of the best video series on any tech channel on KZfaq. 👍👍👍 This reminds us almost all things which we take granted in phones this days.

These sights of Norfolk and Ghent bring back memories of my early 20's spent over there. I immediately recognized Fairgrounds at the end. Thanks for the memories!

No one may have been asking out loud for a look back at the Palm Centro, but in our hearts, we all wanted it. Seeing the thumbnail brought a smile to my face. Thank you. From Pocketnow to your own channel, you're still one of the best. 😀

This was my first touchscreen phone. I loved it SO much. Had a feeling this one would make an appearance on this channel sooner or later - and you did not disappoint! Miss those gummy keys lol. One of my favorite things about any phone ever
