When you think of NASCAR's most dangerous track, you would probably think of Daytona, Talladega, or maybe even Kansas. One very underrated track is Pocono Raceway. Today we take a look at 9 of the most wild crashes from Pocono, from 1980 to the early 2000s. During this time, it was one of the most feared tacks on the Cup series schedule.

Pocono was recently Indycar's most feared track, from the unfortunate fatality of Justin Wilson, to Robert Wikens crash that left him paralyzed, and then the 2019 big one, after that it saw Indycar decision to never return to Pocono again

Wilson's accident was a total fluke that could have happened anywhere, I don't think you can really attribute it to the track.

One thing that makes Pocono so dangerous is the fact you're at 200 mph going into the tunnel turn and u have no banking to slow down. We've seen some incredibly hard hits there due to it. Great video NFJJ

Yeah they have that very long front stretch which is almost mile long, they get up to 200-205 MPH and have to slow down for that tight turn 1, which is maybe 75 or 80 MPH

@@Gage_Brumley not really the point exactly how fast they go in the corner, its just to illustrate that they are going over 200 mph on that long straight, then hard on the brakes to make that tight turn 1.

Do you not know that the tunnel turn at Pocono is the exact same dimensions as all four turns at INDY! not to mention a lot more people have been killed at INDY than any other track on the circuit. Nobody is crying to get INDY off the schedule

As hard as it might be to imagine, the fastest 500-mile-race ever run was at Pocono Raceway -- Juan Pablo Montoya won the 2014 IndyCar race at an average speed of over 202 mph.

Pocono is scary but watching Michael Waltrip’s car cut in absolute HALF at Bristol at the vehicle gate opening was the scariest I’ve ever seen live - could’ve swore we just witnessed a fatality, everyone there did. When Mikey walked out and surveyed what just occurred, he got the biggest standing O of his life all while we were looking at each other going “how in the absolute hell is he not dead right now…” Thankfully he wasn’t!

I was there at Bristol when Waltrip hit the gate entrance - I'm glad he wasn't hurt but + "mikey" isn't exactly someone I respect - just the opposite

@@davidrice3337 I get it - there’s a bunch of drivers that I don’t necessarily want to have beers with either, but I surely don’t wish injury or worse on any of them. Couldn’t stand Sr even tho my guy was great friends with him, but def didn’t want nor wish what happened to him. Realize the risks but still don’t wanna see anyone perm injured or worse. Pocono also was the first track to try a "safer barrier" by using boiler plates that could rebound the impact in turn one....but you could also punch through them or shear the car in half

Turn 9 at Riverside had a boilerplate wall, and so did Dover

That wasn't for safety, as much as it was for saving money. Dirt would constantly wash underneath it, causing problems on the track. The boilerplate could cut into a car (especially an Indycar) when broken. A stupid idea which eventually was changed.

Of all the brutal crashes that occurred at Pocono, I am surprised that the only fatality was the IndyCar wreck that killed Justin Wilson in what was a freak incident, which he was struck by debris from Sage Karam. Had he arrived there a second sooner or later, nobody would have died at Pocono.

If Justin Wilson had been a few inches in one direction or the other, he's still be racing today. As far as fatalities, they used to run a Modified race, the Race of Champions, at Pocono Raceway -- not on the big oval, but a short oval course that incorporated part of the front straightaway. In 1989, a driver named Don Pratt lost his life in a crash in that race.

@@BSNFabricating So true! In fact, I do not know whether the "track" itself caused Pratt's death. If I remember correctly (I read about it, as I did not attend and have not seen video of the impact, just the aftermath), the track/NASCAR placed concrete barriers at the end of straightaway. Why they would not simply let the car continue off down the long straight to prevent an impact (and be picked up by a wrecker) along the road that was on the backstretch at the time befuddles me. The videos I've seen of the ROC on the 3/4-mile track look amazing. kzfaq.info/get/bejne/mZiXeaSY0bncXZ8.html I believe the video shows the last ROC from Pocono in 1991. I do not know whether they changed the barriers and such after Pratt's death. From what I can see, the video never gives a complete view of the barriers in the First Turn. I assume they'd be the same those in Turn 4, which the camera shows several times. Also, you can see the road on the backstretch to the big track, along with the space in the wall that could have split a car in two. Their starting more than 50 cars contributed to some problems from my perspective. I'd have loved to have seen that race at Pocono.

@@michaellavin6417 That crash is on YT. You're right, the decision to place concrete barriers perpendicular to the front straight is one of dumbest things I've ever seen at a racetrack. And it was absolutely responsible for this drivers death. Why the need for a barrier when you have a quarter mile of straight for a runoff?

At 7:35 they are circling the top of Dave's white helmet getting pushed against his window net. I remember that from watching the race.

Totally agree but, to be fair, there wasn't really a great camera angle of that one to really demonstrate how BRUTAL the hit was. I'll never understand how he "walked away" from that.

Buddy Arrington was in a violent crash at Pocono in 1986 resulting in a head injury and I think a broken leg. He ended up missing races, most notably Michigan in June where substitute driver Rick Baldwin would have a bad driver side crash in qualifying that would result in his head hitting the wall. Baldwin would be comatose until his death in 1997 as a result of massive head injuries.

Arrington's crash was due to him deciding to pull up in front of oncoming traffic, though. Less to do with the track and more to do with a, ahem, questionable driver decision.

Was at Pocono and I saw Davey's crash in 92 and I was surprised that he survived it, but we lost him later on, and that was a sad time for a few, thanks for the clip

Pocono basically ended Jimmie Johnson's competitve career. He won at Dover the week before, had a horrific crash at Pocono where he was visibly shaken, and then never won again. I know he'll say otherwise, but that can't be a coincidence. I truly believe that wreck scared him and he was just never the same again.

I was at Pocono when Davy flipped but we were sitting towards the first turn and never saw Davy's car until it was on a flatbed on the way back to the pits. No video screens back then.

Sadlers engine flying out of the car when he hit the embankment inside the track just before the tunnel turn will be one of the many pocono wrecks i will remember forever

Poccono definitely is the track I fear most and I'd most likely never try driving on. Just look at it - three long straights and three sharp turns, this is the track. (It's a triangle after all, so this is expected. Triangles always have (at least two) sharp angles.) And all three turns are different from each other in terms of lean and width. You want to overtake on the straights, on the turns you almost almost have to stop. That is the hardest track in NASCAR, even today! And my main reason to respect Denny Hamlin, despite not liking his way of racing. He simply is unbeatable on this track.

Honestly the one that sticks out to me is when Dave Marcus helmet was thru the window net at Pocono . Add to that Wickens and Wilson. I love the track but DAMN, its dangerous

I remember that! Buddy Baker had even pointed out in the replays that the window net had likely saved Dave's life. Dave Marcis was well into his 50's at the time so the fact he walked away from that was basically a miracle.

I was at the '92 race when Davey crashed. The track is so big and we were sitting about 2/3 of the way down the front stretch. We couldn't see any of it. We only heard the track announcers describing the crash. Later we saw the destroyed car being brought back to the pits on the flatbed. Didn't see the crash itself until that night on the news.

I love Pocono. It's one of the most unique tracks ever. 3 turns that were modeled after Trenton, Milwaukee and Indy. If you never heard of Trenton Speedway, google is your friend.

It wasn't showcased here but I was at the race in the mid 2000s, think it was 2006, where Jeff Gordon had his massive crash in turn 1. Brakes failed and he dipped down into the grass to try and scrub off some speed, then he managed to spin it around so he went into the wall rear end first, but the car slapped back hard and he took a big shot to the driver's side door panel. This was before the COT. He walked away from it without any issues but as a spectator who was there, it was a VERY scary wreck to see happen live. He got incredibly lucky. Easily 200mph on corner entry at a place like Pocono with that super long front stretch.

The flip and slide in the Xfinity race this year is also stuck in my head. He slid to a stop right in front of me. I had a pit pass too, so on Sunday I saw marks in the track from where he slid

Isn't this where Jeff Gordon lost his breaks going into turn 2, the tunnel turn, and slammed the wall very hard? Good job on the video. I really liked it. Brought back some old memories. Btw, I was at the race where Elliot Sadler.crashed along with Kurt Busch recording the biggest g-forces since NASCAR started using "black boxes" in the race cars.

I remember that 2002 race. It was the longest race ever because they had to take an hour or so to fix the guardrail where Park and Earnhardt hit. Then they knocked out 40 laps or so and it started raining

I was there too, it was like 15 minutes between fixing the wall then the rain. As I recall the race was called early for darkness.

Good video. One I’d add is Jeff Green in 2002 (I think). Driving the one car for DEI. He hit hard enough to knock his shoes off from what I’d heard.

I remember when Jr got into that wreck w Lake and he got out and ran to his car. I was never a fan of his fathers but that instant I became a fan of Jr! Class act! His Dad wouldn't have done that ever IMHO!

Junior and Steve Park was the first really nasty wreck I witnessed in real time; watching Junior run to Park's car made me sick to my stomach in a way 13 year old me had never experienced before. Still one of the scariest-looking wrecks of the last 25 years imo.

They have Dave Marcis' car in the Eastern Museum of Motor Racing near Williams Grove in PA. The damage to the chassis is almost unbelievable. The front clip is swayed by like 18 inches.

Pocono is my home track. I was at the 2002 Pocono race and remember watching Park tumble down the back straight. Not so Fun fact: I've never been to a race Pocono that didn't involve a red flag. Those being the 2002 Pocono 500, 2015 Pocono 400, & 2019 Indycar race.

Having watched all these crashes on TV and seeing the Kurt Busch and Elliot Sadler crash in person I totally agree with the assessment that Pocono is the most dangerous non restrictor plate racetrack on NASCAR'S schedule only for the reason there are less crashes there than at Daytona or Talladega. It seems to me over decades that when there is a crash at Pocono it is usually bad.

There were a couple of scary wrecks in 1986 as well where a car hit the end of the wall separating pitroad from the front straight. I don't remember the driver involved.

Pocono has the longest single straightaway in the series, and one of the longest in the world (for track/circuit racing), so incredibly fast speeds into sharp and low-banked corners. Plus all the corners are different angles, so you can't really set up your car to be perfect. High speeds, dicey setups, and just totally unforgiving. I started watching NASCAR in '88, so I have some really powerful memories of seeing Bobby Allison's crash there.

I still consider this the most brutal track honestly alongside Kansas. Kurt Busch and Jeb Burton's incidents were one thing but remember, how many incidents we've had like Jimmie Johnson's career breaking crash, or the incidents with Elliot Saddler and Justin Wilson. Worst injury with the new car already under its belt, I'm kinda scared what the next Pocono races will do.

I remember the numerous amounts of people who were furious after the Park and Junior wreck when, the very next year, Green (In Park’s car) hit the same spot as Park, but a newly formed embankment launched his car back out into traffic, nearly snapping his neck

I'm not discounting Pocono as dangerous/feared, but I'd throw Atlanta (both pre- and post-1997 reconfigure) in there, as well as Dover. Guys have had crashes at Atlanta and Dover that have slowed/ended their careers or simply messed with them from that point on.

Pocono is intense, that is one reason I love it. High speeds, shallow banking, tight turns; you better have a safe car to race there. That is why, unfortunately, I don't think Indycar needs to race there ever again.

That’s Bobby Allison wreck was vicious. That almost ended his life. Before they fixed the inside walls in the 80s and 90s nearly every track had the potential to hurt people.

Pocono needs to be banked higher in all three turns to 24-28 degrees both to better handle the immense straightaway speeds and cut down on some of these bad hits, but also to open up passing (especially making the draft effective again and also eliminating shifting under green; shifting interferes with passing on net).

My dad and I were at the 92 Miller 500 where Davey flipped after contact w DW, we even said to each other there's gunna be a wreck n my dad took a lot of pictures before and until after the crash, we have a picture of the roof separated and airborne

Pocono was very dangerous because the inside fence was far away from the track and the cars kept on rolling on the grass. Ten years or so the SAFER barriers were installed much closer to the racing surface.

I don't recall the year, but the time Ryan Newman went straight to the earthen embankment was scary to watch. In my head I was sure he was seruously hurt or worse. Climbed out and just went to his knees from what I remember.

Yeah Pocono is brutal, but treacherous. I've watched NASCAR raced at Pocono for 25 years, and I've seen drivers had huge wrecks there, including Dale Jr and Steve Park in 2002, and Jeff Gordon in 2006, plus brake failures with multiple drivers in the past, and yes it does hurt a bunch.

I think a video that could get you a lot of visibility, Maybe by tweeting Denny or Kevin at this point. Get a list of crashes like Schader pocono hit where it backed in violently. Make a compilation that what if it was the next gen car.

Dale Jarrett had a similar crash to Schrader that same year. Other notables was Elliott Sadler in 2010? And Jimmie Johnson in 2017

I feel like Ken Schrader’s crash at Pocono is very underrated in terms of how shocking it was. The entire back of the car was set ablaze.

Ah, good ol' Tim Richmond helping Dale Sr. R.I.P. both of them, very talented and one of the biggest "what ifs" in NASCAR history and a GOAT on the other, sad we lost both too soon!!!

I had completely forgotten about the Dave Marcis crash. I think the Steve Park/Dale Jr and Elliott Sadler incidents must have erased it from my memory.
