Check the European competitions from the late 60s to mid 80s - and you’ll find Scottish teams in the latter stages of all the European trophies. Great video, I was 12 when it happened and growing up in Belfast, it was pretty big news. I was in the east of the city, and so I was surrounded by Rangers fans, but I could never bring myself to support them as even then I knew how poisonous the sectarian element was, and how that situation generally was affecting many lives in my city. Nowadays, I'm a neutral still, but I always get a bit of schadenfreude when Celtic beat them (so maybe I'm not quite a neutral).

The signing of Mo Johnson happened before I was born. Now I don't speak for every Rangers fan, But i think Signing Mo was a great bit if business. Despite out dated backlash for both sides of the old firm at the time. It also opened the day for more Catholics and players or other faiths and races to join Rangers. There will obviously be backs thinking Rangers and Celtic fans out there. But I'm glad sectarianism is Scotland is nowhere near as bad as it was now. When i hear of Rangers getting ready to sign new players, The last thing i'm interested in is "Are they Catholic or protestant, or what" I couldn't care less. I want religion and politics out if football. Especially in Glasgow.

I'm not sure that the Celtic backlash was outdated. He was a self-confessed Celtic fan, made lots of noise about how they were the only club he wanted to play for, how he'd crawl over broken glass to rejoin, etc. Ill-advised, to say the least. Any club's fans would always be unhappy if a player said all of that only to sign for their biggest rivals instead. But I've not come across Johnston getting religious abuse for it. By contrast, Rangers fans continued to give him religious stick for some time. I can't speak for how Rangers fans treat or view him today.

Funny how Athletic Bilbao is praised for its signing policy - which was by definition based on race - but those lefties call Rangers a bigoted club, as an insult and slur. Rangers would have signed non-British or non-Irish Catholics at any point in their history I am sure, but the difference there is that they are not Irish Catholics or those whom purport to be so. The Irish Catholics emigrated into Scotland and refused to integrate and they are at fault in the first instance that caused the tension between native Scots and the immigrants. Celtic FC is a good example of that - it was formed as an exclusionary in-group for the Irish migrants, which caused further separation.

Just the Scottish and English protestants who went to the plantations in Ireland. They didn't integrate with locals they brutalised them as over lords. Celtic were started to feed the poor regardless of their background with backing from the Jewish community. So stop misrepresenting the truth for your own agenda or study history ffs

I don’t agree with Bilbaos policy, but technically speaking it’s not based on race. An ethnically Japanese man who grows up in the Basque area could play for the club. Whereas a white Mediterranean looking person from Madrid couldn’t sign for the club. It’s a bit like Liverpool FC only signing players from Merseyside. Merseyside has black and Asian people. So under a Scousers only policy, they would still have Trent.
@josephcurley822610 ай бұрын
What a terrible shameful club Rangers were. Imagine not signing someone because they were catholic? Thankfully they died in 2012 and the new club have plenty of catholics.
