When should you upgrade your camera? It's a question I've contemplated a lot over the last year and in this video I want to explain why i'm still using an old Sony A7iii and why i'm still enjoying the photos it's producing.
Gear Used 📸
Sony a7iii
DJI Mavic Mini 3
Tamron 28-75mm f2.8
Sony FE 20mm F1.8
Kase Filters
Three Legged Thing Corey Tripod
Shimoda Explore 40L camera bag

My God… we’ve reached “the Sony A7iii is an old camera” already. I very clearly remember this being the newest from Sony and how insane it’s specs and performance were. That feels very recent.

I know what you mean, the mirrorless camera world seems to move so quickly - higher megapixels, automatic focus stacking, built in ND filters and that's all since 2018 (which does seem like a lifetime ago 😅). But I wanted to make this video to raise the point that old doesn't mean bad. These cameras totally hold their own if you're happy with the results and the experience using the camera. More features doesn't guarantee better photos but a lot of weight seems to be put on getting the latest, most highly-spec'd camera and I don't buy into that kinda hype 😅. Thanks for watching 🙏🏻

I want to throw out there that I work for a rather large camera resale company and this is still one of our top ten most popular models, just because it's a little older doesn't mean that it isn't still killer!

😂 Apologies - old is a relative term I guess. There are certainly newer cameras that outperform the sony a7iii in terms of features and specs and 2018 does seem like a long time ago in the fast-paced world of mirrorless cameras. But that being said, I wanted this video to demonstrate that the age of the camera isn't important if you're happy with the results and the experience using it. That's far more important than keeping up with the latest models. I bet you get great results with your camera buddy 👌🏻📸. Thanks for watching!

I'm into my 60s and have been a keen photographer for 50 years. In that time, I've shot with all manner of formats and brands and my take on upgrading is that it should only be done if what you have is genuinely incapable of photographing what you need to photograph. For the most part, obsolescence is a myth. Upgrading lenses will, almost certainly, improve the end result more than swapping camera bodies. Now that there are AI programs to reduce / remove noise - and functions in LrC, etc, which allow colour balance, etc, much better than the predecessors, I can revisit RAW files taken when I got my first DSLR and get much more out of them. As I've got older, I've welcomed more compact, mirrorless technology and swapped, 10 years or so ago, from Nikon D810 + 3 x f2.8 'holy trinity' lenses to Fuji X system. I still have a 35mm film camera and a TLR.

This is such a great perspective, Paul! Thank you for sharing! I think you're totally right about the myth of obsolescence - the brand snobbery/camera snobbery we sometimes see online can make people feel they need to keep up and are almost made to feel inadequate for owning older equipment. At the end of the day, camera's don't make great photos and I think knowing your camera well, regardless how old that camera may be, will produce infinitely better results. Appreciate your insight on this topic, sounds to me like you've got a really great setup that works for you 👍🏻📸

I upgraded almost exactly a month ago from a Nikon D5200, which I've had for almost 10 years, to a Sony a7 III. I bought it in combination with the Sigma 24-70 f/2.8 Art lens and could not be happier. Despite the a7 III's age in the rapid-moving mirrorless space, this is a huge upgrade. I actually have quite the opposite experience of you regarding the 'feel' of the camera. I notice that, after setting up all the buttons how I like them, it is incredibly quick and easy to get the a7 III to do what I want, which means my attention can go to the more artistic side of photography, and enjoying the views.

Congrats on the upgrade! That's so great to hear that you're enjoying it - I can understand why! I love the output of my camera 👌🏻📸 I've never been disappointed with the photos it produces (unless i've messed something up 😅). As I mentioned in the video, the most important thing to consider when upgrading is the experience of using the camera - if it gets you more enthusiastic for getting out with your camera and if it improves your experience in the field then it's a great choice - it's not about the age of the technology/specs etc! Sounds like it's done exactly that for you 👌🏻📸

I think it is much more about your skills and less about the gear as you say in this and your previous video. Great images are about the actual photo (composition, light, exposure etc) rather than megapixels and gizmos. Tech specs are useful in certain circumstances like you say, but a lovely photo can be taken with almost any camera. I recently got some 20+ year old negatives scanned which were photos taken when my daughter was a little girl (mostly taken in Pembrokeshire, Wales as that is where I lived at the time). They were taken on an old Canon EOS film SLR camera from back when I seriously got into photography as a hobby. It was fantastic seeing the images again of her and the landscape of that area. It reminded me that I took bloody good photos back then without all the camera tech we have now (although for it's time, the SLR did have some cool tech in it). It even prompted me to buy a second hand film camera very similar to the one I used back then. So now I use that sometimes along with my Canon 5D mark 4 which I love too. And the bonus is they can share the same lenses and are very similar to use.

Great video. I've been at photography for 28 years. I had been using a 2008 Canon 5D MK II up until a year ago, then I bought the Canon R, which was released around the time the Sony A7 III was. These camera companies do a great job of marketing and creating a false sense of need. Most DSLR cameras produced within the last 15 years or so, and most newer mirrorless cameras are good enough to do 99 percent of the work that needs to be done. It's a matter of knowing the fundamentals of photography and knowing ones gear. That's what I would like to get across on my channel. Thanks for producing this great video.

Thanks for the kind words and thanks for watching Scott! Really appreciate it man! 100% agree with you, I think it's all marketing telling everyone that they need more features when really it's just taking the fun out of photography - it becomes too easy if so many things are automated. I don't know about you, but I like the struggle and I like to feel that i've created the image, not the camera. I always shoot in manual, I use ND filters and polarisers, I use a tripod and try to finesse the compositions as best I can and there are cameras now that make all of that unnecessary and at that point, i don't know how much it teaches the user about basic photographic technique and you almost don't feel part of the process.

Thanks for watching Peter! I think swapping systems can certainly be beneficial for the reason you yourself chose to swap. A7R2 and A6000. It's not about the camera. It's about the use case for the camera. I don't shoot fast moving objects like sports, so fast AF isn't a priority for me. I like to crop and maintain a decent size so megapixels are important to me, hence the R. When I travel, I like small so the A6000 is perfect. There is nothing a newer camera could provide that would make a difference to my needs. So, as you said, get to know your camera in depth, and invest in good glass and accessories until you have what you need. Then spend on travel 😊

I still use my d5600. I tried a d810, S1 and Z7 but sent them all back in the end as I couldn't justify the price for marginal gains. I also realise that I absolutely hate EVF's now, the lag, tearing and inconsistent white balance/colours are really off putting.

Thanks for watching and for sharing your experience - I think I would have done the same in your situation. Marginal gains aren't really worth it if you're spending thousands on a new camera or a completely new system. You just need a camera that you enjoy using! The point you make about EVF's is a prime example of that! That's really interesting and something that's certainly an important consideration!

and this is why I am still using a DSLRs rather than mirrorless cameras and not planing to switch ... ever if possible .. Looking through ovf is for me a pure essence of photography, it's thrilling and exciting .. I feel like if my heart is involved in the process ... compared to looking through EVF, which feels cold and employing brain instead and just like if you're shooting with some mutated super-smartphone ... my main cameras currently are D850 and D7200 and I have to admit that I shoot even more with D7200 because it's just smaller and with smaller and lighter lenses and I love to roam around when I am out ... I would recommend to any landscape photographer who loves a way to photograph same like mountaineers actually love to climb rather than standing on the top to step a back a little and eventually buy a second hand DSLR camera (and perhaps optionally couple of old manual glasses also) and test it out there in the field ... it is actually huge difference compared to super-modern mirrorless cameras that are so perfect ...

Great piece! I am also an A7 iii user. I often consider switching to the A7r iii, because of the extra reach on the mega-pixels, but mainly because it has no Anti Aliasing filter. However, after seeing some of your work I am reinvigorated to continue shooting with A7 iii and sink the funds into a lens.
