When the economy tanks railcars go to storage RJ Corman shoves LPG cars on the NKP RJC 1731 1806

RJ Corman Railroad Company with their pair of EMD GP16's work the west end of their Western Ohio Lines business unit. I pace the train coming out of downtown Coldwater Ohio. Here they pass through the former New Idea complex, a farm implement company and once a big user of rail. Now the shops are occupied by smaller companies that do not need rail. Some of the ties from former tracks into the plant can be seen.
Once the train reaches the industry spurs, the RJC 1806 cuts away and clears up into the Mercer Landmark siding. The north siding is Helena Chemical, both ag businesses still receive railcars and are the furthest west customers on the RJC. Corman leases the line west to the state line but no customers remain in Ft Recovery so this track is used for storage. On this February 2020 day the railroad is storing a train of LPG tanks. Both units were needed to shove the cut west over a grade.
The Western Ohio Line is a former NKP line, once signaled. The bracket mast is one of several that remain. This is only the second time I have managed to film a train pass it!

I drove through there a few weeks ago. There are literally miles of tankers being stored on that line right now. They must have made several trips.

I think they can fit about 300 cars out there. They used to be able to store more but there is a minor washout near St Joe rd.

It might have changed now, but there was a business in the old New Idea plant that would receive one centerbeam at a time. It was left on the main line while being unloaded.

Dramatic views from the air and on the ground of this train. Hope the economy gets moving again soon. Trains are of no value if they have to sit idle. I like to see rail traffic get rolling again. When they move, America moves. As always Scott, excellent video.!

Great video. Thank you for your top notch description too. Very enjoyable. The signals and right of way bridge stone work are wonderful to see. I guess the telegraph poles were all removed. Perhaps a gloomy sign of things to come here in July 2020. Tank cars are nested away across America & now the Dakota Access has been mothballed too.

Great video. That's a lot of cars going into storage. I hope they're activated again soon. I noticed the empty bracket masts, ties, and a signal that was facing the wrong way. About a month ago Blue Mountain Reading & Northern received a huge string of tank cars from Norfolk Southern for storage. At least the track here is still intact even if only for storage.

Almost one-third of all US rail cars were in storage at some time in May. 145K propane (1075 placarded) tank cars like these are in storage, about 33% of the 437K national fleet. Is there a reason why the horns have an odd arrangement? I noticed both have 1 bell pointing forward and the other 4 bells in reverse.

Odd question on the cars going into storage, are they empty or full? The placards all seem to be showing the 1075 -2 loaded side, not the 1075-2 residue only side of the placards that should be on empty cars....

@@ScottTaipaleRail its been a 'few' years since I've worked with them, but there was at one time reversible UN placards on those type cars for either full cars of LPG or empty cars with LPG residue. The cars came in with the regular placard facing out and after you pumped them out, you had to turn the placard to the residue side.

Propane tank cars probably tend to get stored in late winter every year. High demand heating season is almost over and every terminal has all the gas they think they will need to get through. They'll fill to the brim again in the spring and summer when the commodity contract price is lower and the shipping can be spread out for a while using fewer railcars. But the terminals never buy or store an entire winter's worth of gas at once because that is too expensive, hence the tank cars will be brought out of storage and more shipping refill trips will occur during the high demand season. People who buy bottles of propane are too far down the chain to notice price changes. Most of the cost by then is in the handling.
