Frederic has organised for the local police force to stand with him against the Pirates of Penzance.
What is The Pirates of Penzance (1983) about?
Frederic (Rex Smith), who has spent his formative years as a junior pirate, plans to mark his 21st birthday by breaking free from the Pirate King (Kevin Kline) and beginning his courtship of Mabel (Linda Ronstadt). But because he was born on Feb. 29, a date that only arrives every fourth year, Frederic isn't technically 21 -- and the Pirate King is still his master. Unless something gives, Frederic will soon be on a collision course with the Pirate King's new nemesis: Mabel's father.

This might well be the single best performance of any single scene in Pirates of Penzance that any theater group ever did, showcased by Tony Azito and Linda Ronstadt. The choreography and camerawork was amazing, and the way the daughters and the pirates sang counterpoint near the end sent chills down my back.

@@user-zq4zi3dy3c I saw this in Central Park. Tony is amazing! My dad was NYPD and watched the show many times behind the scenes. He said Tony would stretch for hours and that he was very talented.

I, myself, have been performing physical comedy for almost a decade and...It blows me away. Control, flexibility, speed, timing. There's one part where he almost falls as he goes to 'kneel' down, but other than that it's a flawless performance. I heard he had hyperextension, which allowed him to spin his elbows like that!

This is my favorite version of the Pirates of Penzance. I love the disconnect between the Cornish daughters and the well intentioned but cowardly Keystone-cop like constables.

I don't think they are cowardly so much as just being a bunch of guys expected to take on a gaggle of criminals armed with cannons, pistols and swords while only themselves being armed with batons...

If you mean the Lead Policeman, I'd like to point out you used the wrong rank, he's a Sergeant, not a Captain which, in Britain, is a MILITARY rank, NOT a Police one.

While everyone in this production is extraordinarily talented, I greatly prefer this played straight as an operetta without all the goofiness. I find it far funnier that way, but that's just my opinion.
