The Frontline Club, London. On May 3rd, 2023, Hala Gorani and Clarissa Ward, two of the most high-profile journalists working today, both of whom have contributed to New Lines, were joined by editors Faisal Al Yafai and Lydia Wilson to discuss memoir and journalism.
--
News reporting takes both courage and compassion. Seeing, as Ward writes, "the violent remaking of the world at close range" can change how journalists see the world - and even how they understand their own histories.
For both Gorani and Ward, who have spent decades reporting from across the globe, the line between life and work can become blurred.
In Gorani’s essay, in the latest issue of the magazine, she returns to her childhood home, searching for echoes of what she left behind when she was young, and what that home says about America today. "I’m a woman looking for answers to questions I didn’t quite know how to formulate," she writes. "I might be in the same exact place, but it felt like a different country altogether."
Ward’s essay in New Lines was adapted from her memoir On All Fronts, reporting on her own from Damascus, just as the peaceful protest movement turned into an armed insurgency.
In this event, they discussed their experience of reporting on the frontlines, what it means to interrogate their own life and careers - and what telling stories means in a rapidly changing world.
