There is something wrong with the Mekong River. When its normally murky brown waters turned a brilliant blue, it heightened worries about the health of the river that more than 60 million people in Southeast Asia depend on for their livelihoods. Read the story: cna.asia/309nnfg

I guess this really shows that every action, good or not, would have consequences. Ppl quake abt using renewable energy to save the earth, but yet hydropower is damaging the rivers and wind blades kill flying animals :

People in South Asia have largely ignored keeping their rivers clean. Everything is chucked in without thought, even sewage is discharged there in some parts. Interesting that everyone will blame China in the comments but they never bothered to clean the rivers before that.

The problem today is most of societies and some countries regard short term development pains are more unbearable than the fruits of long term gains. Dams do not create droughts, lack of rain does that. River flows to the sea yearly have been constant. River eratic water levels are kept more constant and predictable with dams. Proof of the pudding is in the extensive existing dams in Western countries. They practically eradicated massive floods from European history. Something that anti-dams activists refused to indicate.

How can so many comment blaming china? do China build all the dam? take the xayaburi dam in the video 5:30 . it was constructed and financed by Thailand . even the electricity will be selled to Thailand. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Xayaburi_Dam do you remember the castratropic disaster last year in laos? it was korean build Why everyone blame China for something that they don't do?

Take the case of Philippines where it rains alot! They should not have any water problem at all. So they built only a few dams all from long time ago; they don't like dams claiming it is adverse to the environment and such. And now they don't have enough water, threatening more than 30million in city centers for the sake of a few hundred villagers. Farmers are reported to plant less this year too due to rising cost because of expensive irrigation (pump underground water). Go ahead bust all your dams open and experience what no dams mean in the long term.

China build 8 and 2 proposed additional dams to move that water from mekong river to irrigate northern dessert in china inshort they are alocate the water in years mekong river will dry out leaving south east asia in ruin while that water from the mekong will flow towards china river system i think in the future there will be a a war om water thats the biggest problem in south east asia and right now south east asian countries are silent of that problem you will see that problem will take affect in this coming years south east asia are dying while china is in abundant of water i think they build a hidden pipeline in there 8 dams to move that water they not even released that water in main stream

www.rfa.org/english/multimedia/map-laos-dams-06302011201539.html The problem is Laos and not China. Admittedly dams in China will have an impact on Mekong River but Laos is building 40 dams on their land. There will be fighting between Thailand, Vietnam and Laos one day.

If 90% Loas people now have electricity compared to 5% a decade or two ago then it is a great thing. Storing water in a dam is a good thing compared to flooding is a good thing. China used to have frequent flooding and lots of people suffered. That is substantially gone now and that is a great thing. If heavy rain comes that Mekong river management sets a plan into action to prevent flooding downstream and if too little water then the dams can release some water. Dams can act as a battery and good can come out of it if managed well. I trust that the management of the dams will do good for all. We will see and hope.

Sea water got in since China selfishly blocked the rivers' natural waterways by building dam..! Guess all the downstream people of those countries are praying for the gorgeous Bloody dam to be damaged in a natural way too through the natural disaster that China is facing now..! Me pray for them too..! Right now China is facing serious food shortage too.. so, Laos, Vietnam, Myanmar & Thailand.. don't sell any food to them.. especially rice.. untill they signed the contract among you countries which China disagree/pull out to sign..! Let their hungry citizens demand its government to do so.. it's that simple..!

I have to say, CNA your standard in journalism is steadily decreasing. If you only intend to show a very short clip and is unable to portray a more holistic views on the mekong River, please don't do it. I don't even understand why you have to emphasise on the dam being 'a Chinese' project. The editor and author of this clip has never gone to JC to learn how to write an argumentative essay? Why did you focus solely on the bad consequence of building the dam? So are you trying to say its not good to use renewable energy? The west has built more dams than Asia, why don't you go there and make your documentary? In underdeveloped countries like Laos and Thailand, of course there will be many people dependent on the river for a living. But there's many underlying issues here, so why only portray one sided event? It feels like you are trying to guide audience thoughts towards one direction and that is to blame the government of Laos for destroying the balance in ecosystem for wanting to earn money for the country. Very naive point of view. Absolutely disappointing.

America, Europe & advanced economies in Asia are all turning to more sustainable renewable energy sources. 🤦‍♀️Only poorer countries e.g. Laos is being used by China to build dams to control water supply to Thailand's booming economy Similarly, China build dams to control water supply downstream to India growing economy. India is furious ! Destroying natural eco-system, food supply, people & livestocks will distrupt the peace & stability in the region. Eventually, everything will explode in China's face - bad reputation & global condemnation ! Do to others as you would like others to do to you ! This is NOT win win situation ! Agree more in-depth studies & research, close collaboration between neighbours are required to make the dam project a success for All !
